In the beginning of the first episode, Mercer comes home to find Kelly in bed with a blue alien which leads to a nasty divorce. It takes Mercer a year to get over it and then he finds that he is stuck with his ex wife being second in command. We find out that Mercer hasn't truly gotten over his feelings for Kelly and the two have a love-hate relationship throughout the season.

Hugging the donkey is an improvised maneuver where the pilot gets as close to the opposing ship as possible and makes tight circles and loops around it so that it can't get a solid lock quick enough to do damage.

Throughout the season, Mercer always seems to need help opening sealed doors and calls on Alara to open them for him. In a later episode, Alara has to leave the crew for medical reasons and is replaced by another female from Xelaya. Before she leaves, she gives Captain Mercer a present. At the end of the episode Mercer opens the present and finds that it is a jar of pickles.

Because Isaac is an android, he couldn't tell that he had plastic pieces stuck to his head. The pieces didn't register as any type of threat to his censors. Isaac comes from the planet Kaylon, which is totally populated by androids who believe that they are mentally superior to all carbon based life forms.

They don't belong to the Planetary Union but they allow Isaac serve on the crew as an Emissary and Science and Engineering Officer.

The reason Mercer has Kermit on his desk is never told but Seth MacFarlane, who plays Mercer, is well known for his impersonation of Kermit's voice. He has done his impersonation on many comedy talk shows, "Family Guy", and "Saturday Night Live".

The crew has karaoke nights on the ship and Kelly of course sings Journey tunes. In one episode, Mercer tries to help Kelly's new boyfriend out by telling him to have "Open Arms" by Journey playing on their date night and he'll be in.

When the male Moclans attack the female colony, the background music is "9 to 5". It doesn't really fit the situation, but after all, it is a comedy sci-fi and is funny when it starts up. When the female Moclan leader pleads her case for sovereignty to the Planetary Council, she ends her speech by reciting some of the lyrics from "9 to 5".

While watching the proceedings, Mercer gets a hard stare from his commanding officer and is more that a little embarrassed when she starts reciting the lyrics in dramatic fashion.

Answer: a Twinkie

When Malloy replicates the Twinkie, Mercer tells him that they risked their lives to get the replicator and the first thing he thinks about is a Twinkie, Malloy says "Yeah! You want half?" Mercer responds "Hell yes!" and they both devour their halves and act as if was the greatest thing they ever ate.

Answer: clowns

In the "Firestorm" episode, Alara begins to question her suitability as Security Officer when she hesitates in a critical situation. The Captain decides to let Isaac set up a simulation program to help Alara cope with her fears. Isaac asks the bridge crew to come up with personal fears to add to the program. Lamar added scary clowns to the program. Lamar doesn't even like to hear the word clown being used.
