Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. River is born on Demon's Run

Answer: A Good Man Goes to War

River was born on Demon's Run, a military base that had been taken over by the mysterious Madame Kovarian. A pregnant Amy Pond had been abducted by Kovarian with the intent of turning her child into a weapon against The Doctor.

The Doctor and Rory travel to Demon's Run in an effort to rescue Amy in the series six episode "A Good Man Goes to War." The Doctor succeeds in taking over the base, but fails to rescue Amy's child, who is taken by Kovarian and raised in an orphanage on Earth in the 1960s.

At the end of "A Good Man Goes to War" an adult River reveals to the Doctor who her parents are, and the tells Amy and Rory that she is their daughter.
2. River calls President Nixon from Florida

Answer: The Impossible Astronaut

In "The Impossible Astronaut," a mysterious astronaut emerges from a lake and assassinates the Eleventh Doctor. River witnesses herself murdering the Doctor (she knows she is inside the astronaut stuff) and then in a truly bizarre moment, attempts to shoot her past self, which would have created a massive paradox.

In an effort to sort out the mystery, the Doctor, Amy, Rory and River visit Richard Nixon in 1969. President Nixon was been receiving mysterious phone calls, which the Doctor tracks down to Florida. This episode introduces the Silence, a mysterious alien race that people forget unless they are direct line of sight of them.
3. River regenerates into Mels in New York City

Answer: Day of the Moon

"Day of the Moon" is the immediate followup to "The Impossible Astronaut." FBI Canton Delaware III sets up an elaborate ruse of hunting down Amy, Rory and River as part of a strategy to fight the Silence. River jumps off a skyscraper, only to land in the TARDIS swimming pool.

They wind up visiting an incredibly creepy orphanage, the place that River was brought up (explaining a lot about her psyche).

The Doctor subliminally turns the Silence the enemy of humanity using videotape of the moon landing, and River shoots about a dozen of them in rescuing Amy.

At the end of the episode, a dying young River regenerates. We next see her as Melanie, the childhood best friend of Amy Pond. "You named your daughter .... after your daughter" The Doctor tells Amy when Mels turns into River.
4. Mels regenerates into River Song

Answer: Let's Kill Hitler

At the start of "Let's Kill Hitler" we meet Amy's best friend, Melanie (Nina Touissant-White). She suggests they travel to 1930s Germany and assassinate Adolf Hitler. For whatever reason, the Doctor agrees and they travel to Nazi Germany, where the inadvertantly save Hitler's life.

In the melee, Melanie is shot and regenerates into River Song (Alexis Kingston). She kisses the Doctor using poison lipstick, and winds up using her remaining regenerations to save the Doctor. The episode contains numerous hilarious moments, including River telling a group of Nazis: "Well, I was on my way to this gay Gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled when I suddenly thought "Gosh, the Third Reich's a bit rubbish. I think I'll kill the Fuehrer." Who's with me?"

Using her regenerations drains River and she winds up in the hospital. This is when the Doctor gives her the 200 year diary, which makes frequent appearances over the course of River's timeline.

"Let's Kill Hitler" also has some great backstory for Amy and Rory and reveals what happened to River after New York City.

Nina Touissant-White got her big break on the soap opera "Eastenders" in 2009. She has been working regularly in British television since then.

Alexis Kingston began acting in 1980. She has appeared in numerous films and television shows over the course of her career. She gained wide fame in the United States as Doctor Elizabeth Corday on the medical drama "ER" (1997 - 2004).
5. River gets married to the Doctor

Answer: The Wedding of River Song

The name of the episode kind of gives it away. In "The Wedding of River Song" time is a huge mess, with all timestreams co-existing and time fixed at a single moment - because River refused to shoot the Doctor at Lake Silencio.

The Doctor has to restore time by convincing River that she must shoot him. She does after they get married at the top of a massive pyramid. What is revealed at the end of the episode is that River did not shoot the Doctor, but shot a Teslecta, a shape shifting robot.

Amy also comes to the realization that because the Doctor and River are married, she is the Doctor's mother-in-law.
6. River gets trapped on the TARDIS as it explodes

Answer: The Pandorica Opens

As Amy tells her younger self "OK, kid, here's where it gets complicated."

At the start of "The Pandorica Opens" River leaves clues that lead the Doctor to Stonhenge in the 2nd century. An explosion on the TARDIS has eliminated the universe. In a flawed effort to prevent this, an alliance of the Doctor's enemies trap him inside an escape proof prison called the Pandorica.

With Rory's help, the Doctor escapes. Rory spends the next 2000 years protecting Amy inside the Pandorica. Fast forward to the 1990s. Reality has shrunk to a museum in London. River winds up trapped on the TARDIS as it explodes. Fortunately, she is better at navigating it than the Doctor.

The Doctor winds up saving all of reality by steering his TARDIS into the explosion, closing the rifts we first saw in "The Eleventh Hour" (2010). The Doctor vanishes from reality, but Amy is able to remember him back into existence at her wedding.

Towards the end of the episode, River and Eleven flirt and the Doctor inadvertently proposes. The Doctor invites Amy and Rory to spend their wedding night aboard the TARDIS and this leads to the existence of River.
7. River and Eleven fight the Weeping Angels on Alfava Metraxis

Answer: Flesh and Stone

While Alfava Metraxis is not the first time River meet the Eleventh Doctor, it is the first time the Eleventh Doctor met River. I know, Timey-Wimey. "The Time of the Angels" is the fourth episode of series five, Matt Smith's first season.

The archeologist leaves clues for the Doctor which lead him to a spaceship called the Byzantium. The ship crashes on the planet Alfava Metraxis, and is invaded by the Weeping Angels. This marks their second appearance after "Blink" (2007).

The Doctor and River team up with a group of soldier monks to fight the angels, who wind up getting dumped into the time rift created by the explosion of the TARDIS. For River, this is earlier from her standpoint, because when the Doctor refers to River as Professor, she acts surprised.

The monks take custody of River and return her to Stormcage prison, indicating that the events in "Flesh and Stone" take place after "The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon" (2011).
8. River breaks her own wrist to escape from a statue

Answer: The Angels Take Manhattan

The Doctor and River once again fight the Weeping Angels in "The Angels Take Manhattan" which is set in 1930s Manhattan. River has written a potboiler detective novel to lead the Doctor to her. River has taken on the identity of private detective Melody Malone, who is investigating disapperances which are ultimately linked to the Angels.

River finds herself in the grip of an Angel and is forced to break her own wrist in order to escape. The Doctor uses some of his regeneration energy to heal her.

The quest leads them to a hotel where the Angels keep their victims and drain their energy. Amy and Rory break the pattern by jumping off the top of a building, and wind up in a cemetery in the present (2012). River has to witness her parents being zapped into the past by the Weeping Angels. The episode was the last for Amy and Rory.

After the departure of Amy and Rory, River declines to travel with the Doctor, but advises him not to travel alone.
9. The Twelfth Doctor has a date with River on Darillium

Answer: The Husbands of River Song

The Christmas episode in 2015 was a delightful romp with River, the Doctor, a decapitated head in a bag, a strange robot and several husbands for River. "The Husbands of River Song" also introduces future companion Nardole (Matt Lucas).

The macguffin for the episode is an enormous diamond. It is the mercenary reason River marries King Hydroflax, seeking to get the diamond out of his head. The diamond also provides the money to build the restaurant which plays an important role at the end of the episode.

The Twelfth Doctor and River wind up on a space cruise ship, which River gives a wonderful speech about loving the Doctor, with no clue she is standing next to him. Peter Capaldi's "Hello Sweetie" is priceless.

The ship winds up crashing on Darillium, which is noted for a rock formation where the winds are musical. The Doctor takes river to the restaurant on a date, where he tells her that nights on Darillum last 24 years.
10. River sort of dies saving the Tenth Doctor at the Library

Answer: Forest of the Dead

Steven Moffat introduced River Song in "Silence in the Library" (2008) where the archeologist is leading a group at the largest library in the universe. She surprises the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) by being intimately familiar with him, to the point of knowing his name (only the biggest secret in all of "Dr Who" lore).

The team is killed off by the Vashta Nerada, a voracious species which lives in the shadows. By the end, it is revealed that the library's computer "saved" the patrons by downloading them. River reboots the computer, but it kills her. She does give an awesome speech right before dying. This takes place in the second part "Forests of the Dead" (2008).

The Doctor, being incredibly clever, had given River a sonic screwdriver. He uses it to download her profile into the computer, where River rejoins the crew members who were killed. Of course the painfully ironic part is that throughout their entire relationship, the Doctor knows how and when River dies.

River did reappear on the planet Trenzalore during "The Name of the Doctor" (2013), where the Doctor faced off against the Great Intelligence. Exactly how the Doctor managed to see River remains an unsolved mystery.
