He advises Rick to let Carol keep teaching the kids to defend themselves, and Rick agrees.

Tyreese finds the body of his girlfriend Karen and Karen's friend David. Both have been killed and the bodies burnt. Rick begins to investigate the murder. He realizes that Carol was the one who killed them in an effort to prevent a deadly infection from spreading throughout the prison.

As a consequence, he banishes her from their community by leaving her alone with some supplies, a gun, and a car after they go scavenging. He doesn't discuss the matter with anyone else at the prison, and Daryl doesn't learn of it until he returns from a mission to retrieve medicines.

Hershel, himself a veterinarian, suggests that, unlike pharmacies, the veterinarian college might not have been looted. Daryl leads a group to recover the medicines. This flashback occurs over episode 6 "Live Bait" and episode 7, "Dead Weight." Under a pseudonym, he gets to know the Chambler family and helps Tara and Lilly deal with their dying father. The women and Lily's daughter move on with him, and he runs into Caesar Martinez, who had abandoned him after the first attack on the prison and is now leading his own group. The Governor kills Martinez by hitting him in the head with a golf club and then throwing him into a walker pit. He takes over the group and weapons and uses them to lead an attack on the prison.

Even though Rick tries to make a truce, the Governor decapitates Hershel. The Governor then orders an assault on the prison and destroys its fences so that walkers stream in. As a result, the survivors must scatter. Apparently, the survivors didn't have a rendezvous point established in case anything happened to the prison, even though they already lost one camp (the Greene Family farm) and were scattered and had to meet up again. So they end up wandering in small groups for some time before they finally meet up again.

Mika is killed by Lizzie, who thinks that when she reanimates she will still be herself. She plans to do the same to Judith. Carol then makes Lizzie "look at the flowers" while she shoots her in the back of the head. Lilly dies off-screen in season four, having committed suicide by letting walkers devour her. Tyreese, however, does not meet his death until season 5, episode 9, "What Happened and What's Going On."

Daryl helps Beth in her quest to find her first drink, and they end up fighting, and then bonding, at a moonshiner's cabin. Maggie ends up traveling with Sasha and Bob, while Judith, along with Mika and Lizzie are rescued by Tyreese and end up running into the banished Carol. Rick, Carl, and Michonne survive together, while Glenn finds Tara and the two end up running into a new group - Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene.

The Wolves, Saviors, and Highwaymen do not appear until later seasons. After Beth is abducted, Daryl finds himself alone and falls in with a group known as "The Claimers." The Claimers have their own set of rules among themselves, including that someone must be the first to "claim" something when it is seen. Unbeknownst to Daryl, Rick encountered the group separately and killed one of their men.

This later results in a confrontation where Joe seeks revenge on Rick.
