Daryl finds Merle's sawed-off hand on the rooftop in episode 3, "Tell it to the Frogs." In episode 4, "Vatos," Glenn is kidnapped by the Vatos gang while attempting to recover the bag of guns. Rick's group also captures one of the Vatos members, and they go to make a trade.

They learn the Vatos gang is surviving in a nursing home where they are still caring for the elderly, and they make a peaceful arrangement. While Rick and the others are in Atlanta, a walker herd attacks the camp. In the aftermath, the group heads onto the CDC.

The group encounters Dr. Edwin Jenner in "TS-19," the last episode of the season. The group barely escapes before the CDC self-destructs.

Rick is the first character the audience meets, when he awakens from his coma alone in the hospital. He then meets Morgan while returning to his old neighborhood.

Glenn's voice is heard at the end of episode 1 over the walkie talkie as he talks to Rick in the tank, and in episode 2, "Guts," he rescues Rick and leads him inside a department store, where they meet up with the rest of Glenn's group of scavengers. Gunshots are then heard on the roof, and Andrea asks, "Oh God, is that Dixon?" The group hurries to the roof to stop him, and that's when the audience first sees Merle.

Daryl does not make his initial appearance until episode 3, "Tell it to the Frogs," when he emerges from the woods in pursuit of a deer.

When Rick awakens in the morning in episode 3, he finds Carol ironing his uniform using a camp iron. She quips that she misses her old Maytag. She and some of the other women seem to be in charge of laundry, while Daryl is the camp's hunter, Amy and Andrea fish, and Shane and Dale are in charge of its security.

Jim is introduced in episode 2, "Guts," and is played by actor Andrew Rothenberg. He is seen helping Dale to work on his RV's radiator hose. He was a mechanic before the apocalypse, but he is also seen hunting and fishing. One day, he has a terrible dream and begins digging holes wildly. The group has to restrain him and talk him down. Only after the walker attack does he recall the full extent of his dream: "I remember my dream now, why I dug the hole."

In episode 4, "Vatos," Daryl follows a trail of blood that reveals two walkers slain one-handed. They follow the trail to a kitchen, where he finds a burner and an iron steak weight crusted with skin that suggests Merle cauterized his own wound. "No one can kill Merle but Merle," Daryl attests.

They also find a busted-out window where Merle apparently exited the building, based on the blood trail.

Shane says this in an exchange with Rick in the police car in episode 1. Shane says women are "born thinking the switch only goes one way: on." This scene establishes the friendship and comradery between Rick and Shane before Rick is shot and ends up in a coma in the hospital.

Ed and Amy are both killed by walkers in the attack on the camp. When Daryl goes to finish off Ed's brain with an axe, Carol asks to do it herself and hacks into him while weeping. Amy dies in Andrea arms of blood loss. Andrea waits with her younger sister until she turns and reanimates before shooting her. Jim is bit in the attack, but does not die immediately. Several other unnamed people in the camp also die in the attack.

The group argues over what to do with Jim. Daryl wants to kill him immediately, but the group disagrees. They take him in the RV when they leave the camp, but he grows increasingly sick and eventually asks to be left alone. They leave him propped up against a tree, where he refuses to accept a handgun from Rick to kill himself when needed.

When Rick is hallucinating in season 3 after Lori's death, Jim is one of the people who calls him on the phone.

Morales doesn't die but takes his family and parts ways with the group when they choose to head onto the CDC. Jacqui chooses to remain behind in the CDC to commit suicide with Dr. Jenner when it explodes. Jacqui is played by actress Jeryl Presctott.

In episode 5, "Wildfire," the audience sees Dr. Jenner as a video monitor crackles to life. He reports, "Jenner here. It's day 194 since Wildfire was declared and 63 days since the disease abruptly went global." Scientists of the CDC and their global equivalents had been working frantically around the clock to find a cure.

The French, Jenner says, were the last nation to hold out. But he is eventually the last surviving member of the CDC in Atlanta.

When Jenner releases the doors so that Rick's group can flee the CDC before it explodes, Rick tells him that he's grateful. Jenner then replies, "The day will come when you won't be." He shares with Rick the secret that everyone has the disease within them.

The only two season 1 characters to still exist as regulars on the show in season 10 were Daryl and Carol. Merle died in season 3. Morgan exited the show in season 8, episode 16, setting off alone for parts unknown. His character was transferred to the companion TV series, "Fear the Walking Dead." Rick exited the show in season 9, episode 5, leaving the door open for a possible return.
