Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first thing that Rick and Vyv do when they get inside the new house is to rush upstairs to claim their bedrooms. Inevitably they have a big fight over who should have the best bedroom; how do they resolve this issue?

Answer: Vyv sets fire to the bed and they both tell Neil that it is his room

Rick and Vyv very rarely agree about anything but once Vyv has set fire to the bed they do agree it should be Neil's room, "Neil! - your bedroom's on fire!"
'Best bedroom' in this case is a comparative term; there is hardly any furniture, the decor is terrible (except for a print of "The Fighting Temeraire") and the bed looked most uncomfortable even before the fire - lucky Neil!
2. As Mike settles into his new attic room, he is surprised to find that somebody is already in there. Which of these musicians is hanging upside down from the ceiling?

Answer: Buddy Holly

As Mike unpacks his collection of ladies' undergarments he is startled to find Buddy Holly suspended from the ceiling. Apparently Buddy had been there since his plane crashed in 1959. He had survived on a diet of insects which was the inspiration for his new song "Coo Coo Daddy-Long-Legs". Mike realises very quickly that the royalties alone would make him very rich but even as he is calculating his share of the money Buddy drops to the floor with life extinct. Ever the optimist, Mike thinks he can make a few pounds by selling the guitar.
Glen Miller was a celebrated American band leader. In 1944 Glen was on his way to Paris to entertain American troops but the plane never arrived and he was presumed dead.
Elvis Presley died in 1977 but since then several people claim to have seen Elvis in various places around the world. I never knew what the fuss was about; he was working in my local store for many years - but don't all rush round there; he took retirement a few years back.
David Byrne was the frontman with Talking Heads. "Hanging Upside Down" is the stand-out track from his solo album "Uh-Oh".
3. Mike carries the unfortunate musician downstairs to the cellar. When he enters the cellar he disturbs two men; what are they doing there?

Answer: They are having a holiday

The two men have paid good money to spend two weeks under a light bulb! The experience has made them mentally unstable and they are hallucinating about being lost at sea. After a brief exchange with Mike who asks them to "look after my Buddy" (ouch!) they apparently disappear as they are not seen again in subsequent cellar scenes.
4. Neil starts to polish an old tea-pot and unknowingly summons up a genie who has the power to grant wishes. Neil asks for and receives six pairs of arms and hands. How is the spell broken?

Answer: Vyv destroys the genie

Neil is unaware of the genie's presence but is moaning about how much work he has to do. He says he wished he had six pairs of hands and - hey presto - his wish is granted; the genie returns to his hiding place. Neil is completely ecstatic and rushes upstairs to show Rick.

In a most un-Vyvlike action Vyvyan starts to make some tea and pours boiling water into the teapot. We hear the genie scream and Neil's extra arms vanish before Rick gets a chance to look; more misery and ridicule for Neil ensues.
5. Mike is practising golf on the landing when Rick appears and tries to get into his own bedroom. Mike advises Rick against entering. What has Mike turned Rick's bedroom into?

Answer: A roller-disco

Rick ignores Mike's advice and quickly finds himself in an argument with the roller-disco clientele. Rick is then ejected from his own bedroom by a doorman (played by Robbie Coltrane) who repeatedly bangs Rick's head against the floor until Mike calls him off.
6. Rick cannot use his own room so very reluctantly has to share a bedroom with Neil. What does Rick discover under the sheets?

Answer: A moose's head

In a parody of the famous horse's head scene from "The Godfather" Mike has left a moose's head in Neil's bed because Neil owes him £1.50! "Pay up by the end of the week... or another moose dies!"
Grit is apparently regularly found in Vyv's bed but Vyv is at a loss to explain how it gets there.
SPG is Vyv's hamster however the two show very little affection or loyalty to each other.
7. Rick, Neil and Vyv are watching TV. Rick says he too tired to watch any more and goes upstairs to bed. Rick says he wishes that they had a video recorder so that he could watch what in the morning?

Answer: The little white dot

"The Young Ones" was first broadcast on British TV in the early '80s. At this time BBC usually closed down its broadcasts around midnight, maybe an hour or so later at weekends. To ensure that people didn't inadvertently leave their TV sets on all night, a little white dot appeared in the centre of the screen. The students were big fans of watching the little white dot but Rick was too tired to watch any more and wished that they had the facility to record it.
The students' favourite TV show is "Bastard Squad" but more of that in another episode.
Rick was very excited about the prospect of watching "Nozin' Around"; a new TV show for "Young Adults" which was shown in the first episode. However he was less than pleased with the programme's content and attitude and trashed the TV set to show his disapproval.
8. After the end of a long first day in their new home, Neil, Rick and Mike are preparing for bed. Suddenly an excited Vyv appears claiming that he has discovered oil in the cellar. Mike immediately takes charge and orders a house meeting for first thing the following morning. Where is the meeting to take place?

Answer: The broom cupboard

Actually only Rick and Neil turn up for the meeting in the broom cupboard. The scene is really just an excuse for an "Upstairs Downstairs" parody with items of cleaning equipment playing the main roles. Mike and Vyv appear later having obviously plotted their strategy in advance.
9. Mike appoints himself as oil baron ("El Presidente") and has Vyv as his hired muscle to keep the workforce (Rick and Neil) in check. What is Vyv's weapon of choice?

Answer: A cricket bat

Vyv is very enthusiastic about his new role as enforcer and immediately assaults Neil and Rick with the cricket bat (the latter getting the worst treatment).
However all three have to dig for the oil while Mike tries to broker a deal with the Arabs. Vyv and Neil are making a two man attack on the cellar floor but their timing goes astray and Vyv gets a pickaxe through his head. Even Vyv can't handle that and he collapses in the cellar.
10. Rick and Neil break free from Vyv's tyranny and Rick organises a benefit concert for the oppressed workforce (ie Neil). Rick is expecting a stirring revolutionary anthem but is disappointed to find the singer paying homage to "Dr Marten's Boots". Alexei Sayle is on vocals; what is the name of the backing band?

Answer: Radical Posture

Alexei Sayle and Radical Posture are not really bothered about Rick's class war and are more interested in getting their £200 for this supposed benefit gig. Rick attempts to bully Neil into stumping up the cash but he only has 50 pence to his name so I guess Radical Posture didn't get paid.

They probably thought they would get their money when the oil started to flow but no-one should ever have believed Vyvyan: he admitted that he made the whole thing up!
