Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the four students are not aware of it there are apparently several other people living in their house. Which of these fairy tale characters come out at night while the students are in bed?

Answer: Goldilocks and The Three Bears

Goldilocks is seen in the opening scenes but has to disappear quickly as the students are waking up. Later on the three bears and Goldilocks try out the students' lentils ("Hippie Food") but are not impressed and so decide to go to McDonald's.
Other people who apparently reside in the property include WWI British Field Marshal Lord Kitchener and a strange old man in flowing robes.
2. Vyvyan enters a competition to try and win the top prize which is a 'Ford Tippex'. Which type of product is promoting the competition?

Answer: Cornflakes

To win the car Vyv has first to match six famous noses with six famous bogies. Then has to describe cornflakes in ten words...so he writes, "Cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes."
Rick points out the obvious flaw in Vyv's assessment: that there are only nine words, so Vyv adds another "cornflakes" and submits the entry coupon.
3. Alexei Sayle turns up in the guise of demented taxi driver Billy Balowski, the brother of the students' landlord Jerzei. Billy gives the boys a note from his brother before launching a tirade about high-rise living. What does the note say?

Answer: Dear boys - Don't let Billy near the goldfish bowl...

Billy insists someone has ordered a taxi but nobody has. He also has a note for the students from his brother Jerzei but demands a drink before he will allow them to read it. He drains the content of the goldfish bowl including the goldfish before Rick snatches the note which reads; "Dear boys - Don't let Billy near the goldfish bowl...". The warning is too late I'm afraid.
4. The boredom is about to be relieved it seems as the students gather around the TV to watch their favourite show. Unfortunately disappointment ensues as the programme is postponed at short notice much to the four lads' annoyance. Why was the show cancelled?

Answer: To show live coverage of security forces in pursuit of a terrorist

The boys jostle for position to gain the best view of the TV so they can watch "Bastard Squad", unusually it is Rick not Neil who gets to sit in the worst chair. However just when the show is about to start, the broadcast is interrupted to show the live pursuit of a terrorist suspect.

The boys seem to think that the street looks vaguely familiar; they ought to because the action is coming from their road! The terrorist runs into their house but they are too busy moaning about the cancellation of their show to notice.

The security forces corner the suspect and deliver some (very) rough justice but not before he has time to toss a grenade into the saucepan of lentils which destroys the lads' meal.
5. A game of Monopoly does very little to improve the mood but Vyv has tried his best by altering some of the Chance cards. The card which begins "You have won second prize in a beauty contest..." now concludes in which of these ways?

Answer: Smash Rick over the head with the bank

Vyv follows the instructions on the Chance card and smashes Rick over the head with the bank. When Rick complains to Mike about Vyv's actions Mike concurs that that is indeed what the card instructs; Vyv has altered many of the cards using biro. The "It is Your Birthday..." card now allows you to set fire to Rick's bed and the "Get Out Of Jail Free..." card should be inserted into Rick's posterior! Unfortunately all of this frivolity has a negative effect on Neil who goes into the garden to kill himself (again!).
6. Mike thinks that a trip to the pub might be in order so the four boys nip down to The Kebab and Calculator. They arrive just as Madness are finishing off their set with "House of Fun". When Rick asks lead singer Suggs if he knows "Summer Holiday" by Cliff Richard, what does Suggs reply?

Answer: "You hum it - I'll smash your face in!"

Madness clearly don't want to perform any more songs for the boys claiming that the electricity system has developed a fault. When Suggs threatens Rick with violence then the concert is well and truly over.
Madness were the only musical act to perform in two separate "Young Ones" episodes; they also appeared in "Sick" in the second series where they performed "Our House".
7. The bartender in The Kebab and Calculator turns out to be related to one of the gang. Which of these relatives is it?

Answer: Vyvian's mother

Vyv's mother isn't particularly pleased to see him but is more interested in chatting up Mike. When Vyv's round of drinks comes to more money than he has on him then his mother takes his ring and his watch instead.
8. Back in their house after the ill-fated trip to the pub, Rick finds an interesting article about student grants in the newspaper. When he tries to read the article to the other three he stumbles over a typo and says the word "Ftumch" three times. This summons a devil called Ftumch who has three minutes to kill someone and then get their soul into Hell. Which newspaper contained the typo which helped summon the devil?

Answer: The Guardian

The Guardian's misprints and typos are legendary within the British press (even spelling its own name wrong on occasions), so it was the obvious choice to be the newspaper that Rick was reading and thus inadvertently summon a demon.
9. Ftumch the devil is desperate not to fail in his attempts to get somebody's soul into Hell. Who eventually falls victim to him?

Answer: A man delivering the Ford Tippex

Ftumch has two goes at killing Neil, he tries to eloctrocute him and also drives a metal skewer through his head. These both have limited effect on Neil who has tried to kill himself by using far more violent methods than that!
Amazingly Vyv's competition entry won the Ford Tippex but as the guy is delivering the car he is accosted by a rather aggressive but dim police constable. Ftumch then machine-guns the cornflakes rep leaving the policeman to drive away the car.
10. Which of the four students suggests that if the following day is just as boring then they should consider going into college?

Answer: Neil

Neil's suggestion that they should even consider attending college is not well received by the other three; even they are not quite that desperate!
No they will just sleep on it and hope something turns up. I guess the spaceship landing on their roof might just have kept them awake, then again maybe not...
