Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young woman who was brutally murdered in 1947 in Los Angeles, nicknamed the "Black Dahlia".

Answer: Elizabeth Short

The "Black Dahlia" case is the most famous cold case of the Los Angeles area. Elizabeth Short was found murdered and mutilated on 15 January 1947. Her killer was never found, and the case has served as the basis for a novel by James Ellroy, "The Black Dahlia". There is also a metal band called "The Black Dahlia Murder".
On the show, Elizabeth Short is played by Mena Suvari. She appears as a supporting character on "Murder House."
2. Jewish girl whose diary detailing her family's flight from, and eventual capture by, the Nazis is known all over the world.

Answer: Anne Frank

Anne Frank was a German-Dutch girl from a Jewish family who emigrated from Germany to the Netherlands in 1934 to escape persecution by the Nazis. From 1942, the family lived in hiding in a secret story of a house in Amsterdam, and Anne wrote her diary. Eventually, the family was betrayed and deported to a concentration camp. Only Anne's father survived and published his daughter's diary posthumously.

It has since then become required reading at many schools and is considered an important historical document detailing the events around the Holocaust. On "Asylum," Franka Potente plays a young woman who is admitted to Briarcliff claiming she is Anne Frank and that Dr. Arden is really a Nazi doctor called Hans Gruper.
3. New Orleans socialite and serial killer, lived in the early 1800s.

Answer: Madame Delphine LaLaurie

Madame Delphine LaLaurie was a wealthy member of the New Orleans upper class. Her sadistic side and her tendency to mistreat her slaves were not unknown, but it wasn't until April 1834, when a fire broke out in her house and her tortured slaves were discovered in the attic, that the whole extent of her cruelty became public knowledge.
Delphine is a main character on "Coven" and is played by Kathy Bates.
4. Voodoo priestess and one of the most influential people in New Orleans in the 19th century.

Answer: Marie Laveau

Marie Laveau was a voodoo practitioner who inspired a lot of legends and stories. She blended voodoo and Catholic symbolism and regularly performed voodoo ceremonies for a well-to-do audience.
On "Coven," she is portrayed by Angela Bassett.
5. Serial killer who was active in New Orleans between 1911 and 1919; their identity was never found out.

Answer: The Axeman

The Axeman of New Orleans killed a number of people between 1911 and 1919 (with a long break between 1911 and 1918), but there was no recognizable pattern to his choice of victims (three of the 1911 victims were Italian greengrocers, but later victims included other professions and nationalities as well).
Danny Huston plays a version of the Axeman on "Coven." He is portrayed as a suave and gentle musician with a very rotten core.
6. Female American serial killer active between 1989 and 1990; executed in 2002.

Answer: Aileen Wuornos

Following the success of the movie "Monster," which won Charlize Theron an Academy Award, the name Aileen Wuornos has become well-known. She was a prostitute who killed six or possibly seven of her johns. She was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to death on six counts of murder in 1992. The sentence was carried out on 9 October 2002. Apart from "Monster," her story inspired two documentaries, an opera, and a TV movie.
On "Hotel," she is played by Lily Rabe.
7. American serial killer nicknamed "The Night Stalker".

Answer: Richard Ramírez

Richard Ramírez murdered at least 13 people aged between 9 and 80 years in California in 1985. The press originally dubbed him "The Walk-in Killer," because his early murders involved breaking in the victims' houses; after his MO changed, they called him the "Night Stalker" instead. He died of liver failure in 2013 before his death sentence was carried out.
Ramírez is played by Anthony Ruivivar on "Hotel."
8. American serial killer mainly preying on homosexual men, nicknamed "The Milwaukee Cannibal" or "The Milwaukee Monster".

Answer: Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the most famous serial killers of the world. He preyed on young men, luring them to his apartment, where he sedated them, sexually abused them, and strangled them. His actions did not stop there, however, and he was later diagnosed with multiple mental disorders. He was still declared fit for trial by the grand jury and sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole. He was killed by a fellow inmate in 1994.
Seth Gabel plays Jeffrey Dahmer on "Hotel."
9. American serial killer, the "Killer Clown," active 1972-1978. He was also the role model for the "Twisty the Clown" character in season 4 of "American Horror Story".

Answer: John Wayne Gacy

John Wayne Gacy jr. raped and killed 33 young men in the 1970s. He became famous as the "Killer Clown" because he used to put on a clown costume and entertain children as "Pogo the Clown." His name and the facts surrounding his case are to be found all over pop culture nowadays. His sentence holds the Guinness record for the longest sentence ever handed out: 21 life terms and 12 death penalties.
John Wayne Gacy is played by John Carroll Lynch on "Hotel." The actor also plays Twisty the Clown on "Freak Show," a character inspired by John Wayne Gacy.
The ghosts of John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Richard Ramírez, and Aileen Wuornos all come alive on Devil's Night on "Hotel" and convene for a dinner party.
10. Celtic mythological figure, warrior princess and teacher of Irish folk hero Cú Chulainn.

Answer: Scáthach

The producers have confirmed that Lady Gaga's character on "Roanoke" is called Scáthach. Scáthach (Gaelic for "shadowy") is a mythological figure from Irish folk lore, said to have taught mythological hero Cú Chulainn his fighting techniques and to have given him his spear, the gae bolga.
Scáthach on "Roanoke" is an immortal wood witch to whom the Butcher has pledged her soul. She also seduces Matt, thus causing Shelby to kill him in a jealous rage.
