Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these shows, which revolves around contestants developing romantic relationships, resulted in the first "reality" marriage?

Answer: The Bachelorette

Trista Rehn, who was originally the runner-up in the first season of "The Bachelor", was the first Bachelorette. She married Ryan Sutter, the contestant she chose in the finale of "The Bachelorette". Their December 2003 wedding was broadcast on ABC, and was one of the most widely-viewed programs in the history of reality television.
2. Network executives sometimes have an interesting definition of who qualifies to be considered a celebrity, but they don't let that stop them from trying to sell the concept of a "celebrity edition" to the masses. Which of these shows was the first to feature a season which advertised the involvement of celebrity contestants?

Answer: The Mole

There were two editions of "Celebrity Mole" - one in Hawaii and the other in the Yucatan. The first season aired in January 2003. "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!" was broadcast for two seasons, starting in February 2003. "The Celebrity Apprentice" (a relative newcomer to the celebrity setting) was the seventh installment in the US version of the television series "The Apprentice" which aired in January 2008.

There were several subsequent seasons of "The Celebrity Apprentice" produced since its rating were greater than the original "The Apprentice".
3. Which reality TV heavy-weight was hosted for three seasons by Caroline Rhea until she left the show to return to stand-up comedy?

Answer: The Biggest Loser

Caroline Rhea was the original host of "The Biggest Loser". She is also known for her role as Aunt Hilda on "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" as well as the host of "The Caroline Rhea Show".

Alison Sweeney replaced Rhea as the host of "The Biggest Loser" in the fourth season. Sweeney, who also portrays Samantha Brady on "Days of Our Lives", has previously struggled with her own weight.
4. Which controversial show involved participants leaving their families and village during their Rumspringa to experience a very different life outside their community?

Answer: Amish in the City

The Pennsylvania Dutch term "Rumspringa" refers to a period of adolescence for the Amish that begins around the age of 16 and ends when a youth makes the decision to be baptized within the Amish church or instead leaves the community.

"Amish in the City" aired during the summer of 2004, and was widely criticized for televising the behaviors of Amish trying to adjust to a modern lifestyle as a spectator sport for American viewers.
5. Book Smarts or Street Smarts? That was the method for separating contestants into teams during one season of which long-lived reality show?

Answer: The Apprentice

In the third season of "The Apprentice" Donald Trump divided the contestants into two teams based upon whether they had completed their college degree "Book Smarts" or whether that hadn't "Street Smarts".

The finale pitted the one remaining member of each category against each other in a final challenge. Kendra Todd (Book Smarts) went on to win the title of "The Apprentice".
6. One reality show created a lot of controversy by using ethnic origins to assign contestants to teams during one of its many seasons. Which show captured headlines with that decision?

Answer: Survivor

The 13th season of "Survivor", which was filmed in the Cook Islands, generated controversy before the season even aired when it was revealed that the contestants were divided by race. The four tribes were Rarotonga (Caucasian); Puka Puka (Asian American); Aitutaki (Hispanic); and Manihiki (African American).

During the third episode, the teams were shuffled and two new teams emerged.
7. Many reality shows allow for one or more participants to nominate others for elimination in that episode. Which of the following does not follow that format?

Answer: Top Chef

"Hell's Kitchen" and "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart" provide for contestants to nominate others for elimination at the direction of the host/hostess. However, neither Gordon Ramsey nor Martha Stewart have felt obliged to actually eliminate one of the nominated contestants in all cases. Each have shown the willingness to seek out the worst performer on a task even if the person was not nominated.

"Big Brother" allows for the Head of Household to nominate houseguests for elimination based on the votes of the remaining houseguests.
8. Many reality shows have featured contestants being subjected to harsh evaluation from hosts or judges from abroad. Which of the following has not featured a host or judge from Great Britain?

Answer: The Amazing Race

Though all of the shows have international hosts or judges, Phil Keoghan, the host of "The Amazing Race", was born in New Zealand.

Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan, judges on "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent" respectively, are both from East Sussex, England.

Gordon Ramsey of "Hell's Kitchen" is from Scotland.
9. Which of the following shows did the networks choose to not bring back for a second season?

Answer: Boot Camp

"Popstars" first season produced the group Eden's Crush, which enjoyed some initial success on the music charts. This was not the case with Scene 23, the group created during the second season - they disbanded shortly after the airing of the second season, and the show was not renewed for a third season.

"Paradise Hotel" returned to the air for a second season in 2008 - almost 5 years following the broadcast of its first season.
10. Which of the following shows was rewarded with a second season?

Answer: So You Think You Can Dance

"Pirate Master" aired on CBS in the summer of 2007. It was such a ratings failure that only 8 of the 14 episodes for the season were even aired. Fans who wished to see how the series concluded could watch another of the remaining 6 episodes each week online.

"Forever Eden" is another show which did not manage to get enough ratings to warrant a broadcast of the entire first season. Only 7 of the original 25 episodes were aired in the spring of 2004.

"The Apprentice: Martha Stewart" was aired by NBC in the Autumn of 2005. Stewart and NBC claim that the show was initially planned as a one-season endeavor, and the poor ratings certainly solidified that position.
