Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Raw and the Uncooked" elimination challenge, the chefs had to cook breakfast over fire pits for surfers on the beach. Which chef was the only one to have sand in their dish?

Answer: Cliff

All of the formerly strong competitors experienced considerable difficulty with this challenge, as Sam, Cliff, and Frank were the three selected with the worst dishes; Frank was eliminated.
2. In the 'Napa's Finest' challenge of season 1, the chefs were given an extremely rare bottle of wine to pair with their dishes, and an expensive ingredient. What was this ingredient?

Answer: Perigord black truffles

Dave was the winner of this challenge, as he was the only chef to not choose lamb as their primary protein. His black truffle mac 'n cheese that was not only creative, but the judges' favorite dish.
3. In season 2's, the chefs were asked to create an ice cream 'for the people.' Marcel's ice cream was not liked at all by the swimmers at Redondo beach. What were the two primary ingredients he chose to use?

Answer: avocado and bacon

Ilan also used bacon in his ice cream, but his goal was to create ice cream with a breakfast flavor and it was more well liked by the crowds.
4. In season 1's "Food of Love" episode, Elizabeth Falkner was the guest judge and she asked the contestants in the quickfire to create a fruit platter. What did she criticize several chefs for putting on their plates?

Answer: pineapple tops

Stephen spoke of how he knew that this would be a fatal error for the chefs, saying that one of the first things he learned in culinary school was, "if you can't eat it, don't put it on the plate."
5. In season 3, who was told that they had the worst dish in the history of top chef?

Answer: CJ

CJ was my favorite chef from season 3; he had a great sense of humor, a wonderful spirit, and his own unique perspective on food. The broccolini definitely got a very bad rap, especially with Anthony Bourdain at the judge's table.
6. In season 1's "Restaurant Wars" challenge, Harold, Tiffani, and Dave won with their family-style cuisine. What was the name of their restaurant?

Answer: American Workshop

In judging Dave and Tiffani fought quite furiously over the challenge, as well as who would be the selected winner to go to Cannes (the prize). Tiffani said that the restaurant's name was one that she had created and held onto for some time, and had subsequently forfeited future use of, so she believed she should win.

However, because the judges felt that the person responsible for the great service in the front of the house, Dave was selected as the winner.
7. In season 2, the chefs were separated into two groups for the 'Thanksgiving' elimination challenge. Five of the chefs were declared winners in the quickfire, leaving the remaining chefs as the only people up for elimination; their challenge consisted of cooking an avant-garde Thanksgiving dinner for the winners, the judges, and Anthony Bourdain. Who was on the elimination team?

Answer: Michael, Marcel, Betty, Elia, Carlos

The five winning chefs were given the opportunity to not only have a day off from competition, but they also were told to donate a large quantity of food to the local food pantries of Los Angeles.
8. When the chefs in season 2 had to cook for firefighters, the winner's dish was put on the menu of a popular American chain restaurant. In what restaurant can you have Betty's "Tuscan Portobello Melt?"

Answer: T.G.I. Friday's

When Betty was announced the winner, she screamed so incredibly loud that the judges were considerably taken back by the volume and surprise of her response. I tried this at T.G.I. Friday's and I'm sure Betty's was far better than my meal.
9. Who was NOT one of the celebrity sous chefs from the finale of season 3?

Answer: Alfred Portale

It was legitimately exciting when the chefs realized that their first day of prep work for the finale would be done with celebrity chefs. They picked knives, thinking that the number on them determined the order in which they got to select one of their former competitors.

However, the number determined which gondola their sous chef would be arriving in at the top of the mountain. Hung was paired with Rocco, Casey with Michelle, and Dale with Todd English.
10. When season 1's contestants had to create street-cart food to distribute in the Mission District of San Francisco. Stephen and Lee Anne were on the same team but had a hard time connecting with the people, as Stephen was dressed in a very flashy suit not suited well for the situation. What was the delicious dish they were giving out?

Answer: char shu pork sopes

Tom described Stephen as "the best dressed man in the Mission..ever."
