Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During their very first Quickfire Challenge, the chefs were asked to work on the line in a restaurant for thirty minutes. How many lasted the duration?

Answer: Three

To begin the competition, twelve chefs vying for the title of 'Top Chef' headed to the Fleur de Lys Restaurant in San Francisco where they had to work under the watchful eye of head chef Hubert Keller for thirty minutes. If the chefs didn't work to the exacting standards of Keller they would be asked to leave the kitchen before the thirty minutes was over; only three cooks survived the task (some weren't even allowed in!). Leanne was considered the best of the best and was given immunity for the week. For their Elimination Challenge, the chefs were given $30 and told to make their signature dish for the judges AND their competitors, who would have the opportunity to taste and critique their dishes. Harold won the task with a steamed pink snapper while Ken, who showed attitude during both tasks, was considered too underwhelming with his pan-seared halibut.

He was asked to go home.
2. For their Elimination Challenge in episode two, the chefs needed to create 'sexy' desserts for a party hosted by which of the following?

Answer: A fetish shop

In week two, the chefs had a Quickfire Challenge judged by Citizen Cake owner Elizabeth Faulkner who allowed them thirty minutes to create and present a unique fruit platter. Stephen was declared the winner for his deconstructed fruits served in mugs; he won immunity. For their Elimination Challenge the chefs were given a fully-stocked kitchen and $50 to create a sexy dessert for a special client: Madame S, the owner of Mr. S, a fetish shop in San Francisco. Ultimately, the chefs had to make a delicious dish while presenting it to fifty of her clientele (including RuPaul).

After deliberations, Miguel's presentation was declared the best and he won; Andrea was eliminated for her "Chewy Balls, Crunchy Nuts" dish of chocolate, peanut butter, and almonds because it wasn't sexy enough.
3. During their third Elimination Challenge, the chefs split into two teams to create dishes for children featuring what ingredient?

Answer: Monkfish

The theme of this week was 'Nasty Delights', and it started with a Quickfire Challenge in which the chefs needed to cook an octopus dish in sixty minutes. Tiffani won immunity for doing so with a Mediterranean-inspired meal. For the subsequent Elimination Challenge, the chefs worked in teams of five to cook for forty children.

The catch? They would also be required to feature monkfish, an otherwise unappetizing-looking fish. They would have two hours to prepare the entree and its sides. Ultimately, the Red Team (of Andrea, Candace, Lisa, Miguel, and Stephen) won. During the judging, Tiffani was accused of having a bad attitude and was saved by her immunity while Brian accepted his mistakes on the sides and was sent home. During this task, Cynthia withdrew from the competition, so Andrea was brought back in her place.
4. In the fourth set of tasks of the competition, the chefs were told to make a dish that would hold up under what conditions?

Answer: After being microwaved

For the Quickfire Challenge in week four, the chefs were given $20 and thirty minutes to shop in a very interesting market-- a gas station. With another thirty minutes, the chefs had to impress a judge by making higher-quality foods out of, essentially, junk. Leanne won this challenge, her second Quickfire win, by making a Funyun Battered Spiediel, similar to a mozzarella sandwich. Following this, the chefs were given $50 to create a dish that they could present to a group of women that could be reheated in a microwave. Tiffani was clever with her Miso and Mirin Glazed Seabass as she chose a fish which wouldn't depreciate the longer it cooked.

In the end, the judges thought that Candice's technical issues with her quiche couldn't stand up; she was sent home.
5. The fifth challenge of the competition forced chefs to fuse different ethnic foods with what core cuisine?

Answer: Latin

The fifth Quickfire Challenge involved a blindfolded taste test. All of the chefs were given five minutes to identify twenty ingredients, many of which, like longan, tamarind, hibiscus, and nata, were quite obscure. While some chefs only got one correct each, Andrea won with four of twenty to earn immunity.

In the next Elimination Challenge, the chefs paired up to create fusion cuisine, combining Latin with either Japanese, Moroccan, Chinese, or Indian and selling it from a street cart in the Latin-heavy Mission District. Ultimately, Tiffani and Dave had the best option, a Moroccan-inspired Cubano sandwich, while Lisa went home for contributing to a poorly-devised Japanese salad.

Her partner, Harold, was spared.
6. The sixth Elimination Challenge forced the seven remaining chefs to prepare dishes for a party hosted by what culinary world figure?

Answer: Ted Allen

This time, the seven chefs met for a Quickfire Challenge judged by "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" figure Ted Allen. They had several ingredients and twenty minutes and, with their prices by the pound, they had to spend less than $3 to make their dishes. Stephen won, earning immunity, and everyone was told they would be serving dishes-- one course each-- at a book party hosted by Ted Allen.

They would be given $50 per guest and be in charge of making the menu. When they arrived at the restaurant at which they were cooking, they were told to draw knives and work on whoever's course they drew, regardless of what that entailed, within two hours. Lee Anne excelled with the fourth course (originally Tiffani's), a Pan-Seared Duck with Stuffed Gnocchi, while Andrea lost on the first course (originally Miguel's) of Smoked Scallops and Caviar.
7. For their seventh Elimination Challenge, the final six chefs split into two teams to create a restaurant. One team made a family-style dining room; the other made a restaurant called 'Sabor', inspired by what cuisine?

Answer: Spanish

In the seventh slew of challenges, the chefs were told that the Quickfire Challenge would not grant immunity; they had to make a wonderful sandwich in thirty minutes using whatever ingredients they wanted and it would be added to the menu of judge Tom Colicchio's new restaurant, Witchcraft, in San Francisco. Harold won with a Mortadella Dandelion Sandwich. Following this, the chefs split into a red team and a blue team to create a restaurant concept in a predetermined space with $1,000 ($500 for food and $500 for decor).

The red team won with their family-style restaurant, 'American Workshop', when diners scored them at 26/30. The blue team of Lee Anne, Stephen, and Miguel lost with 'Sabor', a Spanish-influenced restaurant, and a score of 22/30. Dave was declared the ultimate winner, also earning a trip to the Cannes Film Festival, while Miguel was sent packing for, allegedly, acting as a sous-chef instead of a top chef.
8. In the eighth Elimination Challenge, whose menu was chosen to be the full course list for a wedding?

Answer: Lee Anne's

This time around, the chefs were presented with a Quickfire Challenge where they had to pitch an entire wedding menu including canape, amuse-bouche, three courses, pre-dessert, and dessert (a wedding cake). No one would receive immunity, but the one whose menu was chosen by gay fiances Scott and Scott after ninety minutes of prep would be able to lead the final five chefs to create the wedding dinner. Lee Anne won and everyone had sixteen hours to prepare and create the meal for one hundred guests.

The catering experience proved tough and, in many ways, was underwhelming (including the Betty Crocker-boxed wedding cake). Stephen was considered by the judges to be too defensive of the poor meal and he was eliminated for being too educating and playing the sommelier card.
9. During their penultimate challenge in Napa Valley, the final four had to make a dish complimenting a wine pairing and what expensive ingredient?

Answer: Black truffle

For their second-to-last set of challenges, the final four took on a Quickfire Challenge in which they had to elevate the concept of a certain junk food, recreating an item with a gourmet twist. Looking to the lowest level of the food chain, foods included popcorn, nachos, corn dogs, and hot dogs.

After forty-five minutes, Harold's Popcorn Cakes with Shrimp Ceviche won. After this, in the Elimination Challenge, the chefs headed to Napa Valley to work with a rare 2001 vintage of wine and expensive black truffles, making dishes to pair the two and impress famous Napa chefs.

After this, Harold and Dave were immediately sent to the finale while Lee Anne was sent home over Tiffani for over-complicating her dish with too many ingredients.
10. What chef was the Top Chef and winner of season 1?

Answer: Harold

Heading to Las Vegas for the finale, the final three were surprised with a final Elimination Challenge in which they had to cook for three different parties of people, fulfilling room service orders (the parties were a group of poker players, the last three eliminated chefs, and the cast of Cirque du Soleil). All three required different specifications but it was Dave who was eliminated. Though he excelled, he accidentally forgot a third dish for his last order. Following this, Harold and Tiffani needed to make a five-course meal in a final head-to-head; they had two past chefs help them through the challenge. Ultimately, Harold's meal was considered the better of the two and he became the first winner of "Top Chef", taking the title and the $100,000 prize.
