'True Detective' - 1.3 'The Locked Room' Quiz

Answer: A pastor

The detectives go to meet the pastor when he is giving a sermon to his congregation. They wait for him until he is done and then talk to him. They show him a picture of Lange and ask him if he knows her. The pastor says he doesn't remember all so well.

They then ask him about how their church burned down and pastor tells them that he and the congregation just moved on after the fire. Marty and Rust then speak to people of the congregation separately and manage to get some information about who the girl was with one day - a tall man with shiny skin around his jaw.

Answer: Burt

Burt is a mentally challenged member of pastor Theriot's congregation. Rust does a check on Burt inside a trailer van. He tells Marty that all the people of the congregation have a clean record except for Burt. He tells Marty that he spent some time in prison for indecent exposure and in Angola, some people castrated him with a razor and didn't do a good job of it.

He also tells Marty that he embraced Burt and he soiled himself. He suggests that they put a surveillance team on the congregation. He then tells Marty that Burt had seen the tall man that Lange was with.

Answer: Obsessive

Marty and Rust discuss the relation between the Lange and Fontenot murders. Rust says that something might have been missed and that they need to go through things again. Marty tells him that they don't have the time. This is when Marty tells Rust that he is obsessive and has tunnel vision. Rust tells Marty that he is also obsessive but not about the job. Marty tells Rust that he is incapable of admitting doubt.

They then agree to put out an APB on the tall man with facial scars.

Answer: To return the lawn mower

Marty comes home and gets angry seeing Rust there talking to Maggie. He also gets mad that Rust mowed his lawn. Rust decides to leave even though he is asked to stay for dinner. Outside the house, Marty asks Rust what he is doing at his home when he is not there. He tells Rust not to come around and mow his lawn. Rust then leaves recognizing the tension between them.

Answer: His mistress, Lisa

Maggie and Marty try to set him up with a friend of theirs. While the group talk about random things, Marty sees Lisa with another man in the restaurant. He then excuses himself from the table and signals Lisa to come to the bar. He asks her if she plans to go home with the guy she is on a date with.

She dismisses him and goes back to her date while Marty gets more drinks and gets back to his table. Maggie and Marty then dance together.

He tells them that he thinks a family would bring in boundaries and that boundaries are good. So he thinks that Rust needed a family. Before this, Marty is shown at Lisa's place, drunk out of his mind. He barges into her place and assaults her date. He shows her date his badge and asks him lewd questions about what he and Lisa did together.

Answer: Maggie

Maggie calls Rust because Marty went somewhere saying one of colleagues needed help. She wanted to find out if it was true and asks Rust if it was. He tells her that he doesn't know anything. Maggie tells him that she would've called the office but she knows that they lie to her.

She then asks Rust about his date. He tells her that he walked the pretty lady to her door. He reassures Maggie that Marty will be home and hangs up. Earlier in the episode, Maggie and Marty have a conversation about why he has changed.

Answer: Rianne Olivier

The death was Rianne Olivier was pronounced as an accident due to a flood. But Rust finds something in the coroners report about the hyoid bone that suggested that it wasn't an accident. While discussing what to do further, their boss comes in and asks them why they haven't handed the case over to the task force. Marty and Rust ask for some more time before they hand over the case as they have a new lead.

The boss agrees and they head to Pelican Island to meet Rianne's grandfather.

Answer: Light of the Way

They meet Rianne's grandfather and he gives them some information about his granddaughter. He tells them about a boy who she used to date and that he went off with him. He tells them about the school that she used to go to which was run by Reverend Tuttle.

They go to the school and find it abandoned. Rust talks to the groundskeeper. Marty gets some information on the police radio about the man Rianne was seeing, Reggie Ledoux.

Answer: He and Dora Lange's ex-husband were cellmates in a prison

They find that Reggie Ledoux skipped parole a few months ago. They also find that he was busted sometime earlier for his involvement in a meth and LSD lab for which he served time. During this time, his cell mate was Charlie Lange, Dora's ex-husband. Marty then acknowledges Rust's good work. They put out an ABP for Reggie Ledoux and ask for him to be detained on sight.
