Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Rohr of the American Christian Assembly wanted a pledge from Vinick about what?

Answer: Pro-life judges

George Rohr wanted a commitment from Vinick that he would only appoint pro-life judges. Although his staff advised him not to make any commitment, Vinick did actually make a promise to Rohr, which was then leaked to the media. Vinick went on TV and said he had made no guarantee to Rohr.

It was then left to the religious and conservative VP candidate Sullivan to appease Rohr with a promise that he would be advising Vinick on judges.
2. What was the name of the spokesperson for the "Women's Alliance for Choice"?

Answer: Becca

A TV advert misquoted Santos' views on abortion and as a result Santos told reporters that he was opposed to unlimited abortion. Becca then told Leo that the Women's Alliance were considering endorsing Vinick, despite the fact that the Democrats were the traditional pro-choice party. However when Becca met with Santos, he showed her that she too supported some limits on abortion.
3. What was the name of the mother of the African-American boy killed by a Latino policeman in Los Angeles?

Answer: Brenda Burke

Ronnie Burke was killed when he brandished a plastic weapon when getting out of a stolen car. Santos visited the house and Brenda, the mother, thanked him for coming. However the boy's uncle told Santos that he was not welcome. At the funeral service, Santos made a heartfelt plea for compassion rather than blame, which resulted in a standing ovation from the African-American congregation.
4. Senator Montgomery wanted Josh replaced by Leo, as Josh had not organised any campaign in his state on behalf of Santos. Which state did did the Senator represent?

Answer: Illinois

Santos' numbers went up in Illinois, despite the fact that Josh had decided not to campaign actively in the state. Various people, including Senator Montgomery, started to question Josh's competence in running the campaign. At Ellie's wedding reception Senator Montgomery tried to persuade Santos and Leo to replace Josh with Leo. Santos seemed to go along with this, but Leo defended and supported Josh, and convinced Santos that Josh should continue to run the campaign.
5. What was the name of Santos' brother?

Answer: Jorge

Jorge came to visit his brother when Santos was on a short visit to his home in Houston to see his children. He had problems getting through the security surrounding the house because his name was spelt wrongly as George on the pre-approved list of visitors. Jorge asked Santos if he could bring a couple of business associates for drinks and a photo. Bram was alarmed at this suggestion but Santos promised that they would arrange it.
6. Steve Laussen, a refugee rights activist, had a meeting with CJ about genocide in which country?

Answer: Sudan

Steve Laussen spelled out the refugee problem in the Darfur area of Sudan and wanted the US to take strong action. Unknown to him, CJ was already trying to persuade France and Germany to introduce a UN resolution sanctioning Sudanese oil in an effort to stop the genocide.

This was so that China (which would suffer from such sanctions) could not blame the US, which was in the midst of delicate negotiations with China and Russia over Kazakhstan. Steve Laussen, not understanding the complex negotiations that had gone on, went on TV saying how embarrassed he was that other nations were taken the lead in helping to resolve the problems in the Sudan.

However, when CJ told the President about the refugees, he gave her his full support for what she was trying to do.
7. Harry Ravitch, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was called to the White House because of a nuclear accident in which state?

Answer: California

The accident occurred at the San Andreo nuclear plant in California. Harry felt that there was no real danger of a nuclear meltdown and continued to update the President on the progress of stopping the meltdown. This incident had serious repercussion on Vinick's campaign because twenty-five years earlier Vinick had pushed the licensing committee to get the plant opened.

However, Santos refused to make political capital out of it and agreed with Josh that they should leave it to the press to go after Vinick, which was exactly what happened.
8. Which rock star appeared as himself, campaigning for Santos?

Answer: Jon Bon Jovi

Jon Bon Jovi appeared several times on the campaign trail and Lou in particular fawned over him. In Dayton, Ohio, he kept the Santos children amused, playing his guitar for them and offering to take them to the press van for some more Hallowe'en candy. Jon also asked Josh for some time to discuss his ideas about volunteerism which had been his campaign slogan.

In real life, Bon Jovi has been a vocal supporter of Democratic presidential candidates in 2000 and 2004.
9. Which of the following was NOT in the race for Speaker of the House?

Answer: Doug Westin

Santos initially wanted to support his friend Tim Fields, despite Josh's insistence that he should not get involved in the Speaker's race. After speaking with the other candidates, Mark Sellner (who tended to vote Republican on some issues) and Jim Merino (who said he would do anything that Santos asked him to), Santos eventually came round to Josh's view.

He then told Fields that he could not support him as the Democrats in the House would not have any credibility if everyone thought they were just Santos' puppets.
10. Who offered CJ ten billion dollars to solve a world problem?

Answer: Frank Hollis

Frank Hollis, a multi-billionaire, told CJ he wanted to find a single problem to try and solve. CJ replied that highways in Africa would help to get medicines to AIDS patients and Hollis offered her ten billion dollars to fix it. At the same time Santos offered CJ a job in his administration. This led to a conflict between CJ and Danny, which was resolved when CJ finally started to discuss her future life with him.
