Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Filmed between 1965 and 1968, this TV series featured a family, who, through a series of misadventures all caused by a troublesome leading character, found themselves marooned in space. What was its name?

Answer: Lost in Space

"Lost in Space" was such a fun show. The plot was that of a family lost in space as a result of the immensely annoying but entertaining Dr. Smith, who is the lovable villain of the piece. Most of the show took place on a planet in the galaxy in which they have crash-landed, but later in the series, the family took off into space again. It starred Guy Williams and June Lockhart as the parents; Mark Goddard and Marta Kriston as the two love interests; Angela Cartwright as the second daughter; Billy Mumy as Will Robinson, the youngest member of the family who is very close to the family robot (a true star), and, in spite of all his faults, also very fond of the troublesome Johnathan Harris as Dr. Zachary Smith. We loved this show as kids. "Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!"

Captain Kangaroo, portrayed by Bob Keeshan, delighted millions of children for over three decades. Joined by lovable characters such as Mr Green Jeans, Bunny Rabbit, Mr Moose and falling ping pong balls, he entertained, informed and became everyone's favorite Captain... Captain Kangaroo!

3. The hero of one of our Australian childhood TV programmes was a bouncy sort of guy, although he was also forever bushed, had a pouch which never had any cigarettes in it, and was forever finding folk in dire straits. What was the name of this character?

Answer: Skippy the Bush Kangaroo

Skippy was played by a small but active little roo, possibly really a Wallaby, which had a remarkable talent for discovering people stranded in the bush, or who had perhaps fallen down a mine, and could communicate with a young boy by using clicking sounds. "What's that you say Skippy? There's a bloke down the mine and we need a helicopter?" Skippy clicked a confirmation and so off the bush-rangers went. And we all fell for it, and loved it.

4. Mercury Seven was a real group of NASA astronauts selected in 1959 which included Scott Carpenter, Virgil Grissom, Alan Shepard, Gordon Cooper and John Glenn. Which cult 1960s television series was created with these astronauts in mind?

Answer: Thunderbirds

Five characters from Thunderbirds were based on the original Mercury Seven astronauts. Led by their father Jeff Tracy, we had Scott (Thunderbird 1), Virgil (Thunderbird 2), Alan (Thunderbird 3), Gordon (Thunderbird 4) and John (Thunderbird 5). We shouldn't forget other key characters such as Brains, Lady Penelope and my all time favourite, Parker. "Yush M'lady".

5. This comedy filmed in the '50s epitomized the perfect family. Who didn't want a mother who was pretty and could do everything from making a homemade pie to soothing young Theodore's pride, in addition to having a father who was ever so wise. Can you name that show I still love to this day?

Answer: Leave it to Beaver

Theodore Cleaver, also known as "The Beaver", was played by Jerry Mathers. His antics were the main focus of this show. This much beloved comedy about two brothers is just as popular today as it was back then due to reruns on television and DVDs. It ran continuously from 1957 to 1963 and dealt with everything from sibling rivalry to pesky friends such as Eddie Haskell, played brilliantly by Ken Osmond. It was one of the first situation comedies of that era to tell a story from a child's point of view.

6. Which British sitcom was about two rag and bone men living in Oil Drum Lane, London?

Answer: Steptoe and Son

58 episodes and two Christmas specials were filmed of this family favourite comedy classic of the 1960s and 1970s. It told of two rag and bone men in west London, father Albert and his son Harold Steptoe. Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H Corbett took over the lead roles brilliantly, although in real life there was only thirteen years between them.

7. This children's TV programme was first shown in the UK in 1952 as part of the "Watch with Mother" series, and continued for more than twenty years. Which of the following programmes was it?

Answer: The Flower Pot Men

"The Flower Pot Men" was based on the daily lives of two small characters named Bill and Ben who resembled flower pots and who lived at the bottom of an English garden. There was also a third character that you may remember known as Little Weed! Bill and Ben spoke a garbled version of English, called 'Oddle Poddle' and were always involved in minor escapades in the absence of the gardener. Perhaps the most memorable and oft repeated saying from Bill and Ben was "Flobberpop" which in their own special language was how they would say Flowerpot!
