Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Likely Lads
Answer: Terry, Bob, Thelma
Set in Newcastle upon Tyne, the 1960s series produced 20 episodes between December 1964 and July 1966.
James Bolam and Rodney Bewes starred as Terry Collier and Bob Ferris respectively, with Brigit Forsyth as Thelma Chambers, Bob's girlfriend. The trio returned in the 1970s for "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads": by then, Bob and Thelma are married and Terry is the troublesome old friend.
2. 'Till Death Us Do Part
Answer: Elsie, Rita, Mike Rawlins
Set in the East End of London, "'Till Death Us Do Part" starred Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett. The American sitcom "All in the Family" was based on the British series, with Archie Bunker taking the role originated by Alf.
Dandy Nicholls co-starred as Alf's long-suffering wife, Elsie, aka "The Silly Old Moo", with Una Stubbs as their daughter, Rita, and Anthony Booth as her husband, Mike Rawlins.
The series ran for seven seasons and 54 episodes between 1966 and 1975.
3. Dad's Army
Answer: Godfrey, Jones, Pike
Surely one of the true classic sitcoms, "Dad's Army" ran for 90 episodes over nine seasons between 1968 and 1977.
Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier starred as Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson. The platoon comprised Clive Dunn as Lance Corporal Jones, John Laurie as the mad Scotsman, Frazer, John Beck as Walker, Arnold Ridley as the doddery Private Godfrey and Ian Lavender (later a star in "Eastenders") as Private Pike.
With the death of Clive Dunn in 2012, Ian Lavender became the only surviving member of the platoon. Two of the other regular characters have also died since then, leaving only Lavender (who celebrated his 70th birthday in 2016) and Frank Williams (who played The Reverend Farthing and was 84 in 2015) from the original cast.
4. The Liver Birds
Answer: Beryl and Sandra
Set in Liverpool, "The Liver Birds" opened in 1969 and ran for ten seasons and 86 total episodes.
Polly James starred as Beryl Hennessey, first with Pauline Collins as Dawn, but with Nerys Hughes (as Sandra Hutchinson) replacing her from season 2 onward. Mollie Sugden, later the star of "Are You Being Served" played Sandra's snobbish mother.
5. Porridge
Answer: Mr Barrowclough, Lennie, Harry Grout
One of the greatest of all TV sitcoms, "Porridge" was set in H.M. Prison Slade and starred the inimitable Ronnie Barker as Norman Stanley Fletcher. The series ran for just three seasons and 21 episodes between 1974 and 1977. It was followed by the sequel, "Going Straight", which finished primarily due to the sudden death of Richard Beckinsale (father of actress Kate Beckinsale), who starred as Lennie Godber.
Fulton Mackay co-starred as the overbearing prison officer Mr MacKay with Brian Wilde (later a star of "Last of the Summer Wine") as his timid sidekick Henry Barrowclough. A young Peter Vaughan (recently Maester Aemon in HBO's "Game of Thrones") made regular appearances as the prison's "Mr Big", Harry Grout.
6. The Good Life
Answer: Tom, Barbara, Jerry
Set in the affluent London suburb of Surbiton, "The Good Life" ran for four seasons and 30 episodes between 1975 and 1978.
Two show featured two couples who lived next door to each other. The archetypal Surbiton couple were Paul Eddington (later the star of "Yes, Minister") as Jerry Leadbetter and Penelope Keith (who went on to lead the cast in "To the Manor Born") as his haughty wife Margo. Next door were their back-to-nature neighbours, Richard Briers as Tom Good and Felicity Kendall (who every red-blooded male under 50 surely had a crush on) as his cheeky wife Barbara.
7. On the Buses
Answer: Stan, Olive, Blakey
Set in a London Transport bus depot, "On the Buses" ran for seven seasons (74 episodes) between 1969 and 1973.
The star was Reg Varney as bus-driver Stan Butler. We saw him at home with his mother, Doris Hare as Mabel, his sister, Anna Karen as Olive, and his brother-in-law, Michael Robbins as Arthur Rudge. We also saw Stan at work along with his mate and the conductor on his bus (Bob Grant as Jack Harper) and their arch-nemesis, Stephen Lewis as Inspector "Blakey" Blake. Most episodes ended with Blakey reminding everyone that "I hate you, Butler!"
8. Man About the House
Answer: Chrissy, Jo, Robin
"Man About the House" ran for six seasons and 39 episodes between 1973 and 1976. The three stars were Richard O'Sullivan as Robin Oswald Tripp, Paula Wilcox as Chrissy Plummer and Sally Thomsett as Jo. Co-starring as the three housemates' neighbours were Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce and George & Milred Roper.
This series produced two spin-offs: "George & Mildred" ran for five seasons from 1976-79, and "Robin's Nest", starring O'Sullivan as Tripp again but with new live-in partners, which ran for six seasons between 1977-81.
9. Love Thy Neighbour
Answer: Eddie, Joan, Bill, Barbie
It survived for seven seasons and 54 episodes between 1972 and 1976, but unlike many series of that era "Love Thy Neighbour" is rarely-seen on the re-run channels because it would be considered highly non-PC these days.
The show starred Jack Smethurst and Kate Williams as Eddie and Joan Booth, a white couple living next door to black neighbours, Rudolph Walker (later a co-star of "The Thin Blue Line") and Nina Baden-Semper as Bill and Barbie Reynolds. Whilst working-class socialist bigot Eddie and West Indian Conservative Bill exchanged racist taunts, their wives despair of their husbands and become good friends.
10. The Young Ones
Answer: Rick, Neil, Mike
Aired between 1982 and 1984, there only twelve episodes of "The Young Ones", but the seventh of those, "Bambi", is one of the funniest half hours ever seen on UK TV. The four stars appear on an episode of "University Challenge", with guest appearances from Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and Ben Elton as the opposition team, and Griff Rhys Jones taking off Bamber Gascoigne.
The four stars of the series were Christopher Ryan as Mike The Cool-Person, the late Rik Mayall as Rick, Adrian Edmonson as the insane Vyvyan Basterd and Nigel Planer as hippie pacifist Neil Wheedon Watkins Pye.
