Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You could definitely say that Janeway has more style than Picard in this area. What does she have that Picard very much lacks?

Answer: Hair

Actually, Kate Mulgrew's hair was a problem, at first. After her first several days of shooting, the producers noticed that the stage lighting made her fine hair almost see-through, and they had to re-shoot all of those scenes with her hair done up in a bun. Which was more expensive than just hairstyling costs, as some sets had already been dismantled, and had to be reassembled.

And she also wore wigs and hair extensions during the run of the show. In an interview, she stated, "I never understood it. It drove me nuts. Every five minutes with the powder puff, the comb, and the brush all this before every scene they never stop touching me so in the end I just wanted to rip them off. I envy Patrick Stewart!"
2. Say it however you want, when Janeway speaks, there is no confusion. What does Picard have that doesn't make sense?

Answer: An English accent

Even Gene Roddenberry was unsure of Patrick Stewart's casting as Jean-Luc Picard, ostensibly born in France. At first, the producers tried to have Stewart do the part with a French accent, but it did not go over well.

In "Star Trek" canon, they explained away the discrepancy by saying that French has largely gone the way of Latin in the 24th century, with some words and phrases surviving, but no longer widely used.

And then in "Star Trek: Picard", when a scene called for a disguise, Stewart mocked the whole issue by wearing an eyepatch and a beret, and speaking with an outrageously exaggerated French accent.
3. Picard can have his replicated "Tea, Earl Grey, hot". What does Janeway drink, that she described as "the finest organic suspension ever devised"?

Answer: Coffee

It is obvious to me that the "Star Trek" producers just needed to correct an error here. In the same way that God made improvements when he created Eve, Janeway's coffee dependency replaces Picard's tea fixation.

And again, when Patrick Stewart returned for "Star Trek: Picard", he made a poke at his overused "TNG" quote by ordering "Tea, Earl Grey, decaf" from the replicator.
4. Janeway must have a better tailor aboard Voyager than her counterpart does on the Enterprise. What does Picard have to do his tunic every time he stands up?

Answer: Tug it down

The first two seasons of "TNG" had the crew wearing spandex jumpsuits that were reportedly not fun to wear. They changed the style in season three, but it created a new problem for Stewart that had the tunic riding up on him whenever he was sitting. Thus, when he stood up, he invariably had to tug it down at the front to put things back in order.

It became known colloquially as 'The Picard Maneuver', referencing a battle tactic in the show that Picard developed.

Subsequently, this tendency in Starfleet uniforms had to be watched out for, so that others weren't seen continually doing 'The Picard Maneuver', as well.
5. Picard has to put up with unsolicited advice from his doctor, but if Janeway doesn't want to hear it, how can she deal with her Emergency Medical Hologram?

Answer: Deactivate him

Of course, in "Voyager", the character of 'The Doctor' develops over time, and it doesn't take too long for him to be treated as a regular member of the crew, but for a time, even The Doctor would always have to remind the crew to deactivate his program when he wasn't being used. Eventually, his programming was altered to make him more autonomous.
6. Janeway knows how to make decisions better than Picard, obviously. What bridge officer does Janeway NOT have nattering in her ear, going on and on about other people's feelings?

Answer: Ship's Counselor

Not to say anything against Counselor Troi; her character certainly developed over the years since "TNG" debuted.

And in truth, Janeway recognized the value of having a Ship's Counselor on board. In the sixth episode of season one, "The Cloud", Janeway comments, "I wish we had a counselor on board, but the nature of our mission didn't require one."
7. Picard chose a 'yes man' First Officer who walks around like he's trying to open the doors with his face. But Janeway convinced her enemy to become her First Officer, and he uses his face for something a lot cooler! What?

Answer: A tattoo

As the "Star Trek" franchise's first Native American crew member, Chakotay (Robert Beltran) was depicted with a tattoo covering his face from the corner of his left eye, extending up onto his forehead. In the ninth episode of season two, "Tattoo", we learn about the origin of the tattoo, and (unsurprisingly) it was a pattern bestowed upon Chakotay's tribal ancestors by aliens.
8. Ship captains don't get much recreation time, but when they do, the holodeck is available to use. But where Picard stays stiff in a suit as private investigator Dixon Hill, Janeway spins a web of lies as what outlandish villain?

Answer: Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People

The holodeck program 'The Adventures of Captain Proton' was actually a Tom Paris favourite, but when a sentient holographic species believes it to be a true invasion force, Janeway takes on the role of Arachnia to help resolve the storyline.

The fifth season episode was entitled "Bride of Chaotica", but Janeway has to reprise the role in the seventh season episode "Shattered", when a temporal distortion shifts sections of the ship into different timeframes.
9. While Picard's Enterprise might be the flagship of the fleet, Janeway's Voyager has an ability the Enterprise lacks. What can it do?

Answer: Land

The first time we see Voyager land on a planet is in the first episode of season two, "The 37s", when the planet they are orbiting is charged with trinimbic interference, preventing use of the transporter or shuttlecraft.

The only times we see the Enterprise descend to a planet throughout "Star Trek" franchise history, it is crashing.
10. You'd think that Picard, captain of the flagship, would be on an upward trajectory on his career track. But, the much younger Janeway got promoted to which rank first?

Answer: Admiral

Following Voyager's return to Earth in 2378, Captain Janeway was promoted, and it appears as though her accomplishments warranted the skipping of a couple of ranks, as she is seen just a year later at the rank of Vice Admiral (vaulting over Commodore and Rear Admiral). We see her in a cameo appearance in "Star Trek: Nemesis" as she orders Picard and the Enterprise to Romulus.

We don't know any of the details of Picard's timeline between 2379 ("Nemesis") and 2385 when he left the Enterprise to develop a fleet of ships to rescue the population of Romulus from an impending supernova (as we learned in the "Star Trek: Picard" episode "Remembrance"), but he was an Admiral when he took on that assignment.
