Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character from "Friends" once tried to write a romance novel, entitled "A Woman Undone", after being inspired by another friend's mother who achieved success as a writer?

Answer: Rachel

During the eleventh episode of season one, entitled "The One with Mrs. Bing", Rachel was inspired to try her hand at writing, after spending time with Chandler's mother, a best-selling romance author. Rachel's book was entitled "A Woman Undone", and much to the rest of the group's delight, was riddled with hilarious typing errors, such as "beasts" instead of "breasts", and "niffle" instead of "nipple". Needless to say, Rachel never made it as an author, and quickly shelved the idea of writing a book.
2. In the BBC series, "Doctor Who", which actor played the Doctor, who, while taking Martha Jones on her first trip in the TARDIS, arrived in Elizabethan England and met William Shakespeare, who was busy writing the play, "Love's Labour's Won"?

Answer: David Tennant

In the second episode of the third season (of the revived series) of "Doctor Who", which was re-launched in 2005, the Doctor and his newest companion, Martha Jones, found themselves in Elizabethan England. During the episode, which was entitled "The Shakespeare Code", the pair found themselves, along with William Shakespeare, fighting to save the world from witch-like creatures called the Carrionites, who intended to destroy it.

However these witch-like beings' magical words were quashed by Shakespeare's own, which resulted in them becoming trapped in their own crystal ball.

However this also meant that the surviving copies of Shakespeare's newest play, "Love's Labour's Won", went with them, and thus disappeared from the world forever.
3. Though the sisters of "Charmed" were well-known for their spells, only one of them ever made money from their writing skills, by becoming a successful advice columnist. Which sister was this, who also had the ability to see the future, levitate and empathise with others?

Answer: Phoebe

After spending the early seasons of the series studying or working temporary, short-term jobs, Phoebe eventually found her calling, as an advice columnist. Indeed after initially being portrayed as the most headstrong and rebellious of the Charmed Ones, Phoebe was forced to mature quickly, following the death of her and Piper's eldest sister, Prue.

Moreover with the discovery of their younger, half-sister Paige, (which forced Phoebe into the role of the middle sister), Phoebe quickly took on the role of the peacemaker, often smoothing things over between Paige and Piper.

This, in addition to her degree in psychology, as well as her power as an empath, helped to make her a natural at giving advice, and thus made her a very successful advice columnist.

Indeed at one stage she was so popular that she had her own billboard, which was emblazoned with the words, "Ask Phoebe".
4. On the television series, "Castle", author Rick Castle, was well-known for his best-selling series of novels, which were inspired by New York police detective, Kate Beckett. What was the name that Castle gave his feisty female character?

Answer: Nikki Heat

The television series "Castle" centred on author Rick Castle's partnership with NYPD detective Kate Beckett, and the pair's resulting crime-solving adventures. The character of Nikki Heat was created by Castle, and, much to the chagrin of Beckett herself, was based upon her.

The first novel in the series was named "Heat Wave", and was such a success that Castle was immediately offered a three-book deal, in order to develop a series around the character. There was even a movie made about her, which formed part of a season three episode of "Castle", entitled "Nikki Heat".
5. Which member of the "Criminal Minds" gang, who returned to the Behavioural Analysis Unit after initially retiring from it, was not just a profiler, but also a published author?

Answer: David Rossi

Senior Supervisory Agent, David Rossi, (played by Joe Mantegna), was originally part of an early version of the BAU, until he retired in order to focus on his writing. However he did make a return to the unit, in order to, in his own words, "settle some unfinished business".

Despite working long hours, Rossi was regularly shown on book tours, or writing, indicating that, despite his demanding workload, he always found time to please his publishers. The season four episode "Zoe's Reprisal" focused heavily on both of Rossi's careers, as a young criminologist tried to draw his attention to the fact that a serial killer was using his book to copy the methods of previous serial murders. Unfortunately however, the young woman then became the serial killer's next victim.
6. Despite his hectic working life, Special Agent Timothy McGee, from the hit television show, "NCIS", also moonlighted as an author. Under what pseudonym did he publish several books?

Answer: Thom E. Gemcity

Timothy McGee, who was also known by several nicknames, including Probie, and McGeek, was a member of Special Agent in Charge, Leroy Jethro Gibbs' team of NCIS agents. An expert in computer science, having studied computer forensics at MIT, McGee somehow found time to write several novels.

However he wrote under the pseudonym Thom E. Gemcity, which is an anagram of his name, and as a result, he managed to keep his budding writing career secret for longer than he had expected. However he was eventually found out, in a season four episode of "NCIS", entitled "Cover Story".
7. "Murder, She Wrote" was a series that revolved around super-sleuth, Jessica Fletcher, a mystery writer who continually found herself stumbling on, (and eventually solving) crimes. Which Academy Award nominated actress played her?

Answer: Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury played the role of Jessica Fletcher on "Murder, She Wrote" for twelve seasons, from its very first episode in 1984, all the way through to the series' final episode, in 1996. Hailing from the cozy town of Cabot Cove, she made her living as a mystery writer, having only turned to writing following her retirement from the teaching profession.

She was forever finding herself in the middle of criminal investigations, and was even sometimes sought out by people who were desperate for answers to some puzzling mystery.
8. During the early seasons of "Desperate Housewives", Susan Mayer, (later Delfino), made a living as an author and an illustrator. Who were her target audience?

Answer: Children

Susan Mayer (played by Teri Hatcher) was one of the main characters of the hit television show, "Desperate Housewives". Throughout the course of the series, she had many different careers, but initially, did make money as a children's author and illustrator. Her Art degree certainly helped with this, and the first book that she ever published was called "Ants in My Picnic Basket".
9. Throughout the television series, "Bones", one of its main characters, Dr. Temperance Brennan, enjoyed considerable success as a writer. However the work she did on a daily basis was completely different. With this in mind, what was Brennan's day job?

Answer: Forensic anthropologist

Dr. Temperance Brennan, (played by Emily Deschanel), was one of the main characters of the television series, "Bones". Supremely intelligent, Brennan juggled her two careers, as a forensic anthropologist and an author, quite successfully, and her character was very loosely based on the real-life bestselling author, Kathy Reichs. Nicknamed "Bones" by her partner in crime, FBI agent, Seeley Booth, (played by David Boreanaz), Brennan's novels revolved around a character named Kathy Reichs, a nod to the real Reichs, who was also a producer on the show, as well as being the inspiration behind it.
10. Based on a book by Candace Bushnell, "Sex and the City" was a series which followed the trials and tribulations of four New York women-- Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York. All four women were successful in their own right, and all had very different careers. But which of them made their money by writing a weekly column for a paper named the "New York Star"?

Answer: Carrie

Carrie Bradshaw, (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), was the narrator of "Sex and the City", and each episode of the show revolved around the content of her weekly column. Indeed much of her and her friends' exploits and experiences made it into her column, which was also called "Sex and the City". Eventually, the column became so popular that Carrie secured a publisher, which led to her columns being turned into a book. During the latter part of the show, she was also a freelance writer for "Vogue" magazine.
