Skinner was assigned to the protective detail because Scobie was a witness in a high-profile case against a tobacco company. When Scobie was found dead, though, Skinner called in Scully and Mulder to help him provide some answers for his superiors.

Mrs. Scobie woke in the middle of the night and saw Jim's shadow against the master bath door. When she knocked and couldn't get the door open, she called in Skinner. When he got in, Skinner found Scobie dead on the floor with most of the flesh around his mouth eaten away.

Mulder picked up the glass and noticed the bug floating in the bottom. In the meeting at Morley Tobacco, Mulder showed Dr. Voss the bug and asked him if he knew what it was. Dr. Voss told him it was a tobacco beetle, common in the area. Mulder thought the reaction was noteworthy, though, and wanted to focus his investigation around it.

Mulder and Skinner showed their badges to the security guard, who was duly unimpressed. Brimley came down the stairs, though, and took them up to meet with Dr. Voss (and the lawyers, of course).

They broke into Weaver's apartment and found Brimley tied and gagged in a chair. When Skinner pulled out the gag, Brimley couldn't speak and almost immediately, tobacco beetles started swarming out of his mouth, choking him.

When Skinner found Weaver at Morley, Weaver threatened him and felt quite certain that Skinner would not shoot him. Weaver knew he was a scientific anomaly and the key to saving Mulder. As he went to walk out the door, though, Skinner shot him to keep him from going. It was not a fatal wound and when he got to the hospital, Scully was quickly able to figure out how to treat Mulder.

Weaver had been a 4-pack-a-day smoker and nicotine, an effective pesticide, had built up in his body. The nicotine actually killed the beetles before they could kill Weaver.
