Jenny had confronted Ellen when she was putting flyers about Martha on car windshields. After the tense exchange, Jenny walked away and Ellen glanced at the car's window, where she saw the creature's reflection before the glass shattered.

Michelle had been pushing the mac and cheese around on her plate, and told her father that it tasted different when her mother made it. Mr. Crittendon, trying to cheer her up, offered to go out for hamburgers and Michelle seemed to perk up some, but when she looked up to nod, she saw a raven outside the window and got scared.

When Mr. Crittendon went outside to see what the raven was doing, he found a group of the birds feeding on Martha's dead body in the rose garden.

After finding Martha's body, Mulder and Sheriff Adderly went to interview Jenny at her job. After lying about her alibi, she told the men that she needed to get back to work and walked away from them to return to her customers.

As she cowered in fear, Ellen saw a shadow approach the door, which she assumed was the creature, but the door opened to reveal her husband, Sheriff Adderly.

The keys found in Martha's coat and on Ellen's floor were for a room at Pineview Lodge, a local motel, where Sheriff Adderly had been meeting the two women separately for his affairs. He told Mulder that Jenny and Martha knew about each other, but that (to his knowledge) Ellen knew about neither of them.

As Mulder and Sheriff Adderly discussed Jenny's death, Ellen drew herself a bath and found the wound on her shoulder from where Jenny had stabbed the creature with broken glass. Ellen was horrified as she remembered brutally killing Jenny in the motel room.

When Mulder went to Vermont, he left Scully on a thankless stakeout trying to figure out how a mysterious blonde woman repeatedly disappeared inside a club, while prostitutes went missing. They had thought she was a female serial killer. Scully determined, though, that the woman was actually a man with a wig and that the prostitutes weren't dead; "They are alive and well in a halfway house that was set up by this mystery blonde who happens to go by the name of Mark Scott Egbert and Mr. Egbert wishes to acquaint lost souls with the teachings of Christ and that's his hook, I guess.

He dresses up like a fellow prostitute to make the girls feel at ease but this vanishing act is no more paranormal than a change of wardrobe, Mulder. He goes into a place like a, like a woman and he comes out as a man, right under..." Mulder finished Scully's sentence for her, saying "...our noses." Mulder also realized then that Ellen was the culprit in the Vermont crimes.

Mulder went to the Adderly home to talk to Ellen about Sheriff Adderly's affairs, and after a phone call from Scully, realized that Ellen was the creature. He spoke to her through the bathroom door and was preparing to break the door down when the creature burst out and attacked Mulder, ultimately pushing him into the full bathtub and holding him underwater. Before Mulder was dead, the creature suddenly stopped, and when Mulder raised himself out of the tub, he saw Ellen curled up naked in the corner of the room.
