Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the main features of "Civilization" is that every civ has its own leader (or leaders). Which of the following leaders appeared in every game from I to V?

Answer: Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan has appeared in every installment of the "Civilization" series. The other three did not. Julius Caesar and Hammurabi were not included in the fifth game, while Napoleon wasn't a leader of the French in the second and third games.

The only leaders to appear in every "Civilization" game are: Genghis Khan, Alexander, Elizabeth and Gandhi. If the Zulu make an appearance in "Civilization V" Shaka might also join this list.

And what about Montezuma? Well, in the first four games the Aztecs were led by Montezuma II (check the Civilopedia), while in "Civilization V" the leader is Montezuma I.
2. It was in the very beginning of the nineties, but do you remember which of the following civs wasn't in the first game?

Answer: Spanish

Yes, the Spanish were absent from "Civilization I"! They made their "debut" in the second game, and didn't miss a single game since. They weren't available with the vanilla version in the third and fifth games, though, appearing only in later expansion packs.
3. Karakorum - the capital of the Mongols! But was it always their capital? What was the capital of the Mongols in "Civilization I"?

Answer: Samarqand

In "Civilization I" the Mongols built Samarqand, not Karakorum, as their capital.

Samarqand, today in Uzbekistan, was the capital of a later empire - the Timurid empire of Tamerlane.
4. City lists in the game were never perfect. Some of the cities aren't even real! Of the following four, which city really exists?

Answer: Staraya Russa

Staraya Russa (Russian) is a real city. The other three, however, are not.

Ganges (Indian) is a river, not a city. Apollyton (Greek) is tribute to the fansite by the same name. Thunderfall (Viking) is the username of the creator and owner of another fansite - "Civ Fanatics", and another "Easter egg" found in the game.
5. Which leaders led two different civs in two different games in the series?

Answer: Sitting Bull and Maria Theresa

Sitting Bull was leader of the Sioux civilization in "Civilization II" and then leader of the Native American civilization in "Civilization IV". Maria Theresa was leader of the Germans in "Civilization II" and then leader of the Austrians in "Civilization V".
6. Which one of the following civs did NOT have a different capital city in each game they appeared in?

Answer: Vikings

The Vikings appeared in "Civilization" II, III and IV. Their capital was Trondheim on all three occasions, even though in "Civ IV" it appeared under its ancient name - Nidaros.

The Celts' capitals are: Cardiff (II), Entremont (III), Bibracte (IV) and Edinburgh (V).
The Maya capitals are: Chichen Itza (III), Mutal (IV) and Palenque (V).
The Iroquois had Salamanca as capital in "Civilization III" and Onondaga in "Civilization V".
7. In "Civilization V", every leader speaks his own language. Which language does Attila of the Huns speak?

Answer: Chuvash

Attila speaks Chuvash, which is the only living language of the family the Hunnic language belonged to. According to Chuvash speakers, there are so many mistakes in grammar and pronunciation that it took them some time to realize he was speaking their language.
8. One of the new additions in "Civilization V" are the city-states. What type of city-state is Almaty?

Answer: Militaristic

Almaty is a militaristic city-state, and as such will grant you units if you befriend them. Begrade, Budapest, Hanoi and Sidon are the other militaristic city-states.
9. Which of the following is not a trait in "Civilization IV"?

Answer: Seafaring

Seafaring is a trait certain civs have in "Civilization III".

The traits leaders have in "Civilization IV" are: aggressive, protective, philosophical, industrious, spiritual, organized, creative, expansive, financial, imperialistic and charismatic.
10. Which of the following civs of "Civilization V" is NOT new to the series?

Answer: the Austrians

Austria appeared in "Civilization III" as an extra civ. To make it available you had to remove one of the civs because the game only allowed for thirty-two civs (including Barbarians).
