When Makoto first enters the school, he passes out and wakes up alone in a classroom. Afterward, he explores the school and learns the same thing happened to the other fourteen students he meets.

The school rule forbids students from accessing certain areas of the school during nighttime which last from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. such as the dining hall. The students are free to go to many parts of the school during the night. There is also rule forbidding sleeping in areas outside of the dorms.

The students themselves made the unenforceable rule about never leaving the dorm areas during the night. Celeste proposed this rule so no danger would come to anyone during the night. Although several students break this rule many times, no punishment is doled out because it is not a school rule.

Monokuma grows board when no student kills another for several days. He decides to spice things up by providing each student with a video from home. However, the videos contain footage of each student's loved ones undergoing a vague tragedy, leaving their well being unknown.

Answer: Makoto's bathroom

The previous night, Sayaka showed up at Makoto's room scared, claiming someone tried to enter her bedroom next door. Sayaka proposes she and Makoto switch rooms for the night because she will feel safer. Makoto reluctantly agrees and wonders why Sayaka doesn't just stay in her own room since the doors lock from the inside.

The next morning, Sayaka's body is found stabbed to death in Makoto's bathroom, which sets off the first trial.

After Sayaka's body is discovered, Monokuma summons everyone to the gym where he announces there will be a class trial to determine who the murderer is. If the killer can escape discovery, he or she will be allowed to graduate from the school and everyone else will be executed. But if the students can discover the killer, only the killer be executed.

A number of students grow angry at this revelation and Junko attacks Monokuma and steps on him. This is in violation of the rules and Junko is punished by being impaled with spears that Monokuma refers to as the Norse mythological spear Gungnir.

Answer: Hina and Sakura

Much of the initial discussion after the murder involves who could have taken the missing knife from the kitchen. Makoto is the prime suspect because Sayaka was found dead in his bathroom and he was the only person who knew the two had switched rooms.

However, Sakura and Hina state that shortly before the nighttime call rang, Sayaka entered the kitchen so she must have been the one to take the knife. It was speculated Sayaka may have taken the knife for protection.

Answer: Leon

Sayaka was strongly affected by her video that showed her fellow bandmates collapse on stage, possibly dead. She wanted to escape the school and came up with a plan. She befriended Makoto and then manipulated him into switching bedrooms for the night.

She then switched the nameplates on their doors and slipped a note to Leon asking him to meet her in her room. Leon went to Makoto's room where Sayaka was and attacked him but he defended himself and Sayaka hid in the bathroom for safety. Sayaka intended to kill Leon and then frame Makoto for the murder.

Answer: Leon

After Leon defended himself from Sayaka, Sayaka secured herself in Makoto's bathroom. Leon returned to his room and fetched his tool kit which he used to remove the hinges from the bathroom door and proceeded to stab Sayaka. The door to the bathroom was not locked since the boys don't have doors that lock.

Instead, the door to Makoto's bathroom does not fit properly into the frame so it is difficult to open. One of the pieces of evidence that clears Makoto is the fact that Leon had to remove the door frame. Makoto knew the trick on how to open the door so he wouldn't have taken the door apart. Only someone who didn't know how to open would do that.

Answer: The trash incinerator

Leon's clothes had blood on them after the murder and he needed to dispose of them. Since the water is turned off at night, the only place he could destroy the evidence was in the trash incinerator. However, Hifumi was the one on trash duty that night and was the only one who had a key to the gate that separated the incinerator from the rest of the trash room. Leon threw his bloody clothes through the bars of the gate into the incinerator and then stole Hiro's crystal ball and threw it at the start button.

It was this that was the crucial piece of evidence as a normal person would have had considerable difficulty pulling this off. However, Leon's title is the Ultimate Baseball Star, so it was an easy feat for him.
