Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which flying bug hides after these elements? Beryllium - Gold - Titanium - Flerovium - Yttrium

Answer: Beautifly

The third generation Pokémon games designed for Game Boy Advance included "Pokémon Ruby", "Pokémon Sapphire", "Pokémon Leaf Green"; "Pokémon Fire Red" and "Pokémon Emerald". In the "Ruby", "Sapphire" or "Emerald" version you start with a Treecko (grass Pokémon), Torchic (fire Pokémon) or Mudkip (water Pokémon). On route you may encounter other Pokémon and try to catch them.
Be is beryllium. Au is the symbol for gold. Titanium is abrreviated Ti. Flerovium, one of the newest discovered unstable elements, has the symbol Fl. Y stands for yttrium. Put these symbols together and you get Be-Au-Ti-Fl-Y, the Beautifly.
The Beautifly is one of the final evolutions of a Wurmple. At level 7 the Wurmple evolves either to a Silcoon or a Cascoon, and at level 10 the Silcoon evolves to a Beautifly. The graphic appearance of a Beautifly is a butterfly with many colours and it is attracted to blooming flowers. Don't anger them, for the Beautifly has a strong special attack. The Beautifly is a Bug/Flying type Pokémon, and as such has extra strong attacks against a Grass type Pokémon. So if you use a Treecko and you would stumble upon a Beautifly, you better flee.
There are both male and female Beautiflies, so when you want to use a Beautifly to breed, pay attention to its gender.
2. Given the following elements, which Normal Pokémon can you find? Sulphur - Lanthanium - Potassium - Oxygen - Thorium

Answer: Slakoth

S for sulphur - La for lanthanium - K for potassium - O for oxygen - Th for thorium, this adds up to Slakoth.
The Slakoth is a Normal type Pokémon, which limits the strengths and weaknesses against other type Pokémon. Only against Ghost type Pokémon (such as the Duskull) a move will have no effect whatsoever. The Slakoth resembles in artwork a three-toed sloth, and it moves very slowly (hence the nickname slacker Pokémon). At level 18 a Slakoth will evolve to a Vigoroth (which is much faster), and at level 36 to a Slaking.
3. Next up is a Steel/Rock type Pokémon. Which strong foe can be made with these elements? Argon - Oxygen - Nitrogen

Answer: Aron

Ar is for argon - O for oxygen - N for nitrogen. Together that makes Aron.
The Aron is a Steel - Rock type Pokémon, with high defence stats. It is depicted as an undefined mammal with an iron coat. Arons are less than friendly, and they have been known to feed on trucks or railroad tracks, leaving a trail of destructions. The best choice for Pokémon attacking the Aron, are Fighting type Pokémon (such as the evolutions of a Torchic) or Ground type Pokémon (such as the evolutions of a Mudkip).
At level 32 the Aron will evolve to a Lairon, and at level 42 to an Aggron. Both evolutions are of the same type, but with better overall stats.
4. Be careful, or this Fire/Ground Pokémon burns you down. Which Pokémon can you recognize behind these elements? Carbon - Americium - Erbium - Uranium - Platinum

Answer: Camerupt

C for carbon - Am for americium - Er for erbium - U for uranium - Pt for platinum. This adds up to Camerupt.
The Camerupt is the evolution (at level 33) of a Numel. Camerupts are Fire/Ground type Pokémon, so very effective against Steel and Rock type Pokémon such as the Aron. But on the other hand, they are very vulnerable against Water/Ground type Pokémon such as the Swampert.
The artwork sketches the Camerupt as a bovine with two humps, and the special attack of a Camerupt uses these two humps to spray magma.
5. Don't get spooked, but put together these chemical symbols. Which Pokémon hides after this list? Sulphur - Polonium - Indium - Potassium

Answer: Spoink

Sulphur is S, polonium is Po, indium is In, potassium is K. Together this is a Spoink.
The Spoink is a Psychic type Pokémon, and the artwork reveals that it is a weird trick of the mind. The graphic representation reminds me of a mouse on a spring resort, with a strawberry flavoured bubble-gum bubble on top of its head (according to the official Pokédex info, it is however a pearl). The Spoink bounces around on its tail (that resembles a spring resort), and official information says it is the energy obtained by bouncing that keeps it heart beating.
It has a very weak conventional attack, but the special attack can do some damage, especially against Fighting type Pokémon such as the Makuhita or Poison type Pokémon. At level 32, the Spoink will evolve into a Grumpig, more of the same.
6. Which Poison Pokémon hides after this list of elements? Selenium - Vanadium - Iodine - Phosphorus - Erbium

Answer: Seviper

Put together Se for selenium, V for vanadium, I for iodine, P for phosphorus and Er for erbium. The sum is a Seviper. The Seviper is a Poison type Pokémon, and the artwork underlines this character: it is drawn as a venomous snake with a sharp, double-edged tail.

Although it has two very prominent fangs, it uses its tail to cut foes and inject them with poison. The Seviper is more than efficient against Grass type Pokémon, so Treeckos beware. On the other hand, a Seviper is more than vulnerable against Psychic type Pokémon such as the Spoink.

The Seviper has no evolution whatsoever, but of course it can gain extra moves or abilities as it increases its level.
7. Which Pokémon is disguised by this elemental list? Lutetium - Nitrogen - Astatine - Oxygen - Neon

Answer: Lunatone

Lu is lutetium, N is nitrogen, At is astatine, O is oxygen, Ne is neon. Together this is a Lunatone.
Lunatone is a Rock/Psychic type Pokémon, a rare type that was introduced in Generation III. The only other Rock/Psychic type is Solrock, which was introduced simultaneously with Lunatone.
Lunatone was found near the site of a meteor impact and would have come from outer space. The graphics resemble a moon crater in a crescent shape, with an added beak. It is most active at night on a full moon, and then it hovers above the ground. As it levitates, it is immune to attack by Ground type Pokémon such as Sandshrew and Sandslash.
The Rock type and Psychic type have almost no common stats, so their respective weaknesses are not annihilated by the strong points of the other type. This results in the fact that the combined Rock/Psychic type (Lunatone and Solrock) is one of the most vulnerable Pokémon types.
8. By now you should be very familiar with this routine. Which Pokémon is lurking about? Barium - Rubidium - Oxygen - Actinium - Hydrogen

Answer: Barboach

Ba for barium, Rb for rubidium, O for oxygen, Ac for actinium and H for Hydrogen - together this is a Barboach.
The Barboach is a relatively weak Water/Ground type Pokémon, a bit quicker than the Mudkip (starter Pokémon of the water type). Its graphic representation should resemble a catfish, but it seems as a creature I would draw: something that has the body of an eel, the whiskers of a catfish and a few fins.
The Barboach is especially vulnerable to Grass type Pokémon such as the Treecko (the Grass starter type). On the other hand, it is absolutely immune to Electric type Pokémon such as the Electrike.
At level 30, the Barboach evolves to the Whiscash - a stronger version, graphically represented by a smiling whale.
9. Which Ice/water type Pokémon is this? Sulphur - Phosphorus - Helium - Aluminium

Answer: Spheal

S for sulphur - P for phosphorus - He for helium - Al for aluminium. This adds up to a Spheal.
The Spheal is an Ice/Water type Pokémon. As such it is vulnerable to for instance Grass type Pokémon, but very effective against Ground type Pokémon. The Spheal at level 1 does not have any good base statistics, and it's one of the slowest of all Pokémon of Generation III.
The nickname of the Spheal is the clap Pokémon, and its artwork is quite similar to a seal. At level 32 the Spheal evolves to a Sealeo and at level 44 to a Walrein, two other Water/Ice type Pokémon.
10. And which Pokémon can you recognize here? Boron - Silver - Oxygen - Nitrogen

Answer: Bagon

B for boron - Ag for silver - O for oxygen - N for nitrogen. Together this makes a Bagon.
The Bagon is a Dragon type Pokémon, which means an advantage when defending against Water type, Grass type or Fire type Pokémon. On the other hand, a Dragon type has a disadvantage when attacking a Steel type Pokémon such as Registeel.
The artwork for a Bagon is inspired by a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but topped with a stony wig and mane. At level 30 it evolves to a Shelgon (a stronger pure Dragon type) and at level 50 to a Salamence (an even stronger Pokémon, but now of the combined Dragon/Flying type).
The Bagon is less than friendly. Beware especially of Bagons level 15 and higher, for they have learned the powerful Headbutt move.
