VG Alphabetics Trivia Questions

1. In the 1979 Atari arcade game "Asteroids", how does the player earn an extra life?

From Quiz
Video Games A-Z

Answer: Collecting 10,000 points

The player begins the game with 3-5 lives and will earn an extra life for every 10,000 points, up to roughly 250, in which the game ends, as it is beyond the limitations of the processor. Further, once the player gains over 50 lives, there is significant lag.

2. "Reach" and "ODST" were subtitles in what popular Bungie-made first-person shooter series?

From Quiz Press 'H' to Start

Answer: Halo

The original "Halo" was perhaps the crown jewel of the original Xbox, releasing in 2001 as "Halo: Combat Evolved" and becoming a staple FPS series for decades to follow. As the franchise expanded, so too did its game types and stories with "ODST" and "Reach" following the original trilogy and landing on consoles (specifically the Xbox 360) at some point at the end of the 2000s. In addition to the general campaigns, "Halo" games are known for robust multiplayer competitive modes. The series also resulted in a TV adaptation debuting on Paramount+ in 2022.

3. What Double-F game would fall into the role-playing game category, generally?

From Quiz Press 'F' to Start

Answer: Final Fantasy

While "Fatal Fury" and "Final Fight" are beat-'em-up/fighter-style games and "Fatal Frame" is a horror title, "Final Fantasy" is one of the largest RPG series in the gaming sphere having started on the NES console back in 1987. Developed by Square (and eventually Square-Enix), the series has spanned most consoles and has branched off into tactical games, racing games, shooters, and puzzle titles. The games in the series have influenced Japanese-style RPGs for decades, sinking into the groundwater for nearly all future releases in some way.

4. Morris, J, and Derek go by what collective name in their Nintendo DS rhythm game?

From Quiz Press 'E' to Start

Answer: Elite Beat Agents

"Elite Beat Agents", a game under the short-lived Touch! Generations label for the original Nintendo DS, utilized the touchscreen functionality almost wholly. In the game, you helped the trio of agents solve problems around the map by dancing along to famous songs, hitting, scrolling, and tapping to the beat. "Elite Beat Agents" was a cult hit for the handheld and a critical darling despite no sequels being made in the years after its 2006 release (at least in North America). Similar titles, however, would start showing up on other devices (iPads, for instance), and often with original music.

5. Imagine taking a turtle, shaping it to stand like a human and then animating it. Voila! We have ourselves a popular monster from the "Super Mario" game series. For variants, recolour the shells. Which very common enemy have I described here?

From Quiz Video Games Are 'K'

Answer: Koopa

Koopas first appeared in "Super Mario Bros", all the way back in 1985. They have been a common foe in the Mario franchise ever since, appearing in over fifty games! These turtle-men sport a chic, shiny shell, generally green or red. In platforming games like "Super Mario Bros", their shell can often be used as a weapon, but be careful, it's a double-edged sword - if bounced off a wall, well, it can bounce right back at you. Which hurts, apparently.

6. "Asteroids" was an arcade game from 1979 made by what five-letter arcade gaming company?

From Quiz Press 'A' to Start

Answer: Atari

Atari was a major contender in the early days of video games releasing hits such as "Asteroids", "Pong", and "Paperboy". When the video game industry crashed in 1984, Atari went with it-- at least its consoles division. The remainder of the company was purchased by Hasbro at the turn of the century. Atari released a handful of home consoles, most of which went head to head against the Coleco consoles in the early 1980s. Perhaps one of the most lucrative deals in the industry, the rights to "Donkey Kong", were originally cut between Atari and Nintendo. When Atari dissolved away, Nintendo reaped the benefits for decades.

7. In Nintendo 64's "Banjo-Kazooie", what happens if the player uses more than three secret cheat codes in the Treasure Trove Cove sandcastle?

From Quiz Video Games A-Z

Answer: The game over cutscene plays and the Gamepak is erased

The witch Gruntilda warns the player first, giving the player an option, in which they have the option of backing out. If they do not, we see Grunty's threat was no bluff, as the menu scrolls to "Save & Quit" - which always redirects to the game over scene - and the file is no more. The cutscene features an amusing movie in which Gruntilda succeeds in becoming the most beautiful woman. Klungo pushes the switch for the impatient Grunty and she steps out gorgeous, bragging about her looks. The hideous Tooty, on the other hand, is none too happy with Banjo for allowing the vain Grunty to get her way.

8. "Pokemon Gold" was remade in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. What word replaced 'Gold' in the title?

From Quiz Press 'H' to Start

Answer: HeartGold

While the original "Pokemon Gold" (and "Silver") hit Game Boy Color handhelds in 1999, Nintendo made a point of revisiting older series games and upscaling them for later handhelds as time went on, so after "FireRed" and "LeafGreen" saw their release, "Gold" and "Silver" got their revisions as "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver" for the Nintendo DS, hitting stores in 2009 (in Japan). The games bring players back to the land of Johto to catch 'em all and, eventually, head into Kanto to revisit that region as well. Because of their playability on the later handheld, players could also bring Pokemon from other DS games into these ones, at long last. On the remake track, they were followed by "Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire" for the 3DS.

9. Who is the final boss of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time"?

From Quiz Press 'G' to Start

Answer: Ganon

Ganon is a familiar face across all timelines of "The Legend of Zelda" as he appears in the majority of games in the series. This said, in "Ocarina of Time" he, as the only male Gerudo of a generation, infiltrated and took over Hyrule Castle, forcing Princess Zelda into exile to reign over the land for seven years. He's fought at the end of the game as Ganondorf but he transforms into Ganon during the last part of the battle. Ganon returns next in "Wind Waker" and then again in "Twilight Princess". He's also a playable character, in Ganondorf form, in "Super Smash Bros." (first appearing in "Melee").

10. Developed by Harmonix, what five-letter 2020 rhythm game allowed players to mix music on a virtual stage?

From Quiz Press 'F' to Start

Answer: Fuser

Only a few years earlier, Harmonix, known for "Rock Band", released a card-based music game alongside Hasbro. Known as "DropMix", the application allowed players to utilize different elements of songs to create their own mixes in different game modes. "Fuser" was a console/PC-based successor, allowing players to do much of the same with countless tracks, effects, and instruments. The game also allowed players to mix cooperatively on online freestyle stages to make new creative tracks.

11. What does the 'E' stand for in the name of video game developer EA Games?

From Quiz Press 'E' to Start

Answer: Electronic

EA Games, also known as Electronic Arts, started developing in 1982 and rose in the industry to become one of the biggest-earning companies in video gaming. Amongst franchises in EA's roster are "The Sims", "Mass Effect", "Need For Speed", "Command & Conquer", and "Dead Space". EA Games has also had a long-running near-monopoly on the sports gaming genre for nearly two decades, consistently bringing out yearly editions of NHL, Madden NFL, NBA, Tiger Woods, and other sport games to great appeal.

12. What is the last name and famous ancestor of "Uncharted" protagonist Nathan?

From Quiz Press 'D' to Start

Answer: Drake

Nathan Drake, a descendant of none other than Sir Francis Drake, spends his spare time in the "Uncharted" series hunting down mysterious treasures in far-off destinations and, generally, getting himself into near-impossible predicaments. While a great deal of the series involves climbing like a monkey over precarious ledges, it also incorporates third-person shooter elements. The first game ("Drake's Fortune") took Drake to find El Dorado in Peru, the second ("Among Thieves") brought him to Shambhala, and the third ("Drake's Deception") took him to the Iram of the Pillars. All three games involve fantasy elements.

13. In "Final Fantasy IV" (1991), a character, whose name is a homophone of a Biblical villain, was mentally corrupted by the antagonist, Zeromus, because of his lack of mental fortitude. What was this troubled dragoon's name?

From Quiz Video Games Are 'K'

Answer: Kain

"Final Fantasy IV" was a role-playing game originally released for the SNES system in 1991, and skilfully wove dialogue and plot with turn-based battles and an impressive musical score. The plot of "Final Fantasy IV" mainly involved Cecil, a dark knight who went to the light side, and his epic quest with friends to save the world from Zeromus, a spirit sealed on the Moon. In battle, Kain's special ability was to jump, avoiding damage for the jump period, and leap down to deal a strong blow to the enemy. Because he was jealous of Cecil for having Rosa's love, he allowed his mind to be enslaved by the enemy, but he eventually turned 'good' in the end. In the Bible, Cain was the first murderer, killing his brother, Abel, due to jealousy. It can be said that Kain was jealous of Cecil, so a parallel may be drawn.

14. What world is the first stage of "Star Fox 64"?

From Quiz Press 'C' to Start

Answer: Corneria

Taking to their Arwings, the crew of the Great Fox, including Fox McCloud, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi, take to the skies of Corneria to begin their journey to battle the evil Andross. This first level has since become a classic, appearing in different capacities in the "Super Smash Bros." series. From Corneria, the player can either visit Meteo or, if they find the hidden battle behind the waterfall (with Falco's help), Sector Y. "Star Fox 64" was released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 (as one of the console's earliest titles) and it was remade for the Nintendo 3DS as "Star Fox 3D" in 2011.

15. In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", Link can use these moving bombs to hit distant targets or go bowling. What is their name?

From Quiz Press 'B' to Start

Answer: Bombchus

Link can start using Bombchus quite early on in the game though for the most part, he'll use bombs shortly after receiving the Goron Bracelet and receiving a Bomb Bag at Dodongo's Cavern. Bombchus are mainly used in the Bombchu Bowling Alley in Hyrule Castle Town (when Link is a child). Playing this interesting game and winning will result in a victory Piece of Heart or Purple Rupee or Bomb Bag or Bombchus. Bombchus are only required at one point in the game-- to blow up a rock in the Spirit Temple. Bombchus make a reappearance in "Majora's Mask".

16. In the first "Assassin's Creed" game, Desmond Miles takes on the role of what assassin from the twelfth century?

From Quiz Press 'A' to Start

Answer: Altair

In 2012, Desmond Miles enters the Animus, a machine designed to set him into the mind of an ancestor, Altair ibn-La'Ahad, who assassinates figures in the Holy Lands. Why is he doing this? Well, people want to put a halt to the end of the world by collecting the 'Pieces of Eden'; to do that, Desmond must relive the lives of his ancestors. In the second "Assassin's Creed" game, he takes on the role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the Italian Renaissance. Both games were critically lauded and became popular with stealth/adventure players. Both games were on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

17. For what platform was "Chrono Trigger's" less-heralded sequel RPG "Chrono Cross" originally released?

From Quiz Video Games A-Z

Answer: Playstation

When project went underway in 1998, many of the first instalment's lauded "dream team" were not present, such as the legendary artist Akira Toriyama. This less prolific staff, along with the complexity of the game's parallel worlds theme, are attributed to a less than heralded reception.

18. What species is popularly attributed to Sonic and Knuckles?

From Quiz Press 'H' to Start

Answer: Hedgehog

Sonic would eventually become the mascot for Sega as his game series proved to be one of the more popular offerings that their home consoles would provide, so much so that "Sonic" would appear in games well after the company got out of the console market and shifted solely to game development. "Sonic & Knuckles" would first appear together in 1994. The "Sonic" series has since grown exponentially with the hedgehog protagonist even starring in his own well-received major motion pictures.

19. Released by LucasArts in 1998, what PC title was a film noir-style adventure featuring Mexican calaca figures?

From Quiz Press 'G' to Start

Answer: Grim Fandango

Critically acclaimed, "Grim Fandango" was a major PC title in the 1990s known for its humour and unique art-style. By this point in time, LucasArts was pretty well known for "Star Wars" games. "Grim Fandango", however, stood head and shoulders above a bunch of those, returning with restored editions in later decades despite LucasArts being dissolved into Disney's gaming division. "Grim Fandango" took nods from classic cinema as the player took on the role of Manny Calvera passing through the story in the Underworld.

20. Lionhead Studios, founded by Peter Molyneux, continued the releases of what series of games which started on the original Xbox console?

From Quiz Press 'F' to Start

Answer: Fable

Lionhead was also known for "Black & White", but their biggest success came from the "Fable" series which saw several releases on Xbox consoles and PC throughout the 2000s and 2010s. A set of American RPGs hosted in a fantasy world, "Fable" was perhaps most known for its alignment system with which players could shape the game world by being good or evil while completing quests and interacting with NPCs. Lionhead Studios went defunct in 2016 and ownership of the series was kept by Microsoft.

21. Tirisfal Glades, Stranglethorn Vale, and the Isle of Quel'Danas are all found in which geographical region seen in a popular MMORPG?

From Quiz Press 'E' to Start

Answer: Eastern Kingdoms

The Eastern Kingdoms are one of the original locations in "World of Warcraft" along with the westerly Kalimdor. While both contained Alliance and Horde zones to explore, both have since evolved to be more than a simple east and west set of locales. With each progressive expansion, more is added and the world shifts around as a result. Eastern Kingdoms contains Horde areas to the north (including the Undead city of Undercity in Tirisfal Glades and the Blood Elf Silvermoon City in Eversong Woods) and Alliance regions in the central kingdoms (like the Human-made Stormwind City in Elwynn Forest and the Dwarf-built Ironforge in Dun Morogh).

22. 2011 game "Dark Souls" was the sequel to what earlier game by From Software?

From Quiz Press 'D' to Start

Answer: Demon's Souls

"Demon's Souls" was released to rave reviews in 2009, mainly because of its unrelenting difficulty and learning curve. Players were shocked, to die in the game, of all things, because the game was notoriously difficult; it punished players for hasty decisions and legitimately rewarded smart tactics, patience, and wise gameplay. They followed up with "Dark Souls" two years later, quickly receiving critical acclaim and selling millions of copies. Finally-- something for the "Super Ghouls and Ghosts" crowd in the 2010s!

23. Who is Ratchet's partner in the best-selling PlayStation series featuring the character?

From Quiz Press 'C' to Start

Answer: Clank

First appearing in "Ratchet & Clank" in 2002, Clank was a creation of the developers at Insomniac Games as a sidekick for Ratchet, a lombax whose mastery over unique weaponry seems unmatched. Clank, a sentient robot sidekick, became famous enough to warrant his own spin-off game for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) called "Secret Agent Clank". The 2011 game "PlayStation Move Heroes" includes both Ratchet and Clank as playable characters as well; it's not well-received though, at least not compared to the "Ratchet & Clank" series proper.

24. A 2K Games release, what game set in the city of Rapture contains themes from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged"?

From Quiz Press 'B' to Start

Answer: BioShock

"BioShock" was a first-person shooter title set underwater in the steampunk city of Rapture. You played Jack Ryan, a man with a mysterious past setting out to save himself in Rapture under a plane crash. He soon discovers that Rapture is a much deadlier place than envisioned, and with unique powers known as plasmids, angry Slicers, and large Big Daddy enemies, things get pretty difficult to manage. A sequel was made in 2010, three years after "BioShock" was released to critical acclaim. Another entry in the series, "BioShock Infinite", would be set in the sky in a location known as Columbia.

25. Created by The Behemoth, what XBLA game originally released in 2004 featured yellow extraterrestrials?

From Quiz Press 'A' to Start

Answer: Alien Hominid

"Alien Hominid" appeared on several earlier consoles (PS2, GBA, etc.) before releasing on XBLA in 2007 and making waves for online downloads. The Behemoth's first developed game it was a sidescroller adventure in which you could be an alien and travel through stages taking on Earth's forces. Playable in single-player and two-player modes, it was followed up by "Castle Crashers", an unrelated game with a very similar visual style. Unsurprisingly, the aliens made a cameo at one point in this latter game, both as an enemy and a playable character if you had an "Alien Hominid" save file on your Xbox 360.

26. In what year was the original "Devil May Cry" released by Capcom?

From Quiz Video Games A-Z

Answer: 2001

Originally released for the Playstation 2, the success of the gothic-style action-adventure series has led to the creation of various sequels available across various Nintendo, XBox, and Playstation platforms.

27. Headcrabs are parasitic foes found in what Valve-made game series?

From Quiz Press 'H' to Start

Answer: Half-Life

Originally released on PC in 1998, the "Half-Life" series from Valve has evolved to become something much bigger than a sci-fi FPS from their early catalogue, especially with the series growing to include a well-regarded sequel, the side-stories of "Portal", the popular multiplayer game of "Team Fortress 2", and the highly-regarded early VR game "Half-Life: Alyx". Headcrabs are one of the unique foes found in the series as these small creatures leap through the air, aiming to attach to a human host and zombify it.

28. In "Goldeneye 007" (N64), what weapon kills with a single bullet?

From Quiz Press 'G' to Start

Answer: Golden Gun

Famously known for being in the James Bond film "The Man With the Golden Gun", the Golden Gun featured in this game in multiplayer mode or in the final level of the single player campaign, Egyptian, where it's used to face off against Baron Samedi. No matter the case, the Golden Gun is a one-hit-kill on another character. The gun returned in the "Goldeneye" remake on the Wii in 2010 and a handful of other James Bond games. It also appeared in "Perfect Dark", another shooter for the N64 made by Rare.

29. What Visceral Games survival horror series features Necromorphs?

From Quiz Press 'D' to Start

Answer: Dead Space

Releasing its first title in 2008, EA's "Dead Space" successfully employed survival horror elements to create an edge-of-your-seat shooter game with a unique premise. Set aboard a mining ship in the future (in space), Isaac Clarke needed to visit a distress beacon only to discover that the ship had been 'affected' by a religious marker, transforming the people onboard into bloodthirsty creatures referred to as Necromorphs. The catch? Shooting them in the head was only part of the battle. To actually incapacitate foes, all of their limbs needed to be destroyed...otherwise they'd keep coming. Frequent jump-scares and effective lighting and sound made for a particularly nerve-wracking game. Sequels were released in subsequent years.

30. Kremlin, Kaboom, Kackle, Klobber, Klomp, Koco, Knocka... I think I see a pattern here! In which popular primate platformer video game series, which also has a 'K' word in its title, do all these enemies feature?

From Quiz Video Games Are 'K'

Answer: Donkey Kong Country

The "Donkey Kong Country" series primarily featured Donkey Kong, a gorilla, and his sidekick Diddy Kong, a chimp. Other friends like cute Dixie Kong, 'not-so-little' Kiddy Kong, surfing Funky Kong and old Cranky Kong also made repeat appearances throughout the series, and in Dixie and Kiddy's case, even frontlined one or more of the games. Donkey Kong's primary enemy was King K.Rool (or similar versions of this title). He was a green crocodile-like man who bothered Donkey Kong and his friends on numerous occasions. To reach King K.Rool in the platform games, players would typically have to go through sequences of platform-based levels, which often required some dexterity and timing to surpass. Despite always losing in the end, K.Rool would eventually return for more beatings in future sequels.
