Ryu first appeared in "Ninja Gaiden" which became a popular video game series on its own. Bayman is a Russian commando and mercenary fighter appearing only in the "Dead or Alive" series. Jimmy Lee is one half of the popular duo in "Double Dragon", a beat-em up of the 1980s and Ken Masters is the best friend of a different Ryu, in the iconic "Street Fighter" series.

Akira Yuki teaches at a Hakkyoku-Ken dojo; Aoi, Akira's childhood friend, is an Aikijutsu student and Taka-Arashi is a sumo fighter making his only appearance to date in "Virtua Fighter 3". Kage-Maru's fighting style is a variation of jujutsu, the "gentle art" of grappling, which was adapted by the samurais to engage opponents using weapons or unarmed and did not rely on strikes since most samurais wore some kind of armor.

Instead of her pet hawk Mamahaha, Rera fights alongside her pet wolf Shikuru. Rimururu is Nakoruru's younger adopted sister and Rasetsumaru is a demon who looks like Haohmaru. The EX in EX-Nakoruru is for "extra", that is the exact same character with a slightly different moveset that you could purchase in the secret shop of some games such as "Capcom vs SNK Millenium Fight 2000".

Wan Fu, appearing in three games of the "Samurai Shodown" series with three different weapons, might be a warrior king trying to unify China, but he's much younger than the Hell's Gate ancient guardian and fisherman Genbu no Okina, the "drunken master" Chin Gentsai or the bookstore owner Gen Fu. Wan Fu's quote after winning with a super move in the first "Samurai Shodown" was "I thought I was dead.
