Doom Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of the secret level within episode 1, "Knee-Deep in the Dead"?

From Quiz
General "DOOM" (1993) Quiz

Answer: Military Base

Each episode of "DOOM" has a secret exit buried somewhere, in which the player gains access to unique secret levels.

2. The game begins with Doomguy traveling along a spaceport in an unknown location. Of course, he has an army of demons to fight, but what is his objective this time around?

From Quiz "DOOM II" on Funtrivia

Answer: Hold them off for the fate of humanity

At this point, the invasion onto Earth has reached a breaking point, and it seems all is lost. The plan then shifts towards getting the last portion of humanity which has survived into a spaceship, then send them off so they can survive the complete collapse of Earth. Doom guy's goal is to repel the incoming demons which aim to prevent their escape.

3. At the end of each Episode, the player will be told how long it took them to complete the area, and their time will be compared to a "Par" time. How did the development team determine how long the "Par" time should be?

From Quiz "DOOM 1993" on Funtrivia

Answer: An executive creator's time to complete the level

John Romero played through the game himself, rounded up or down how long it took him to finish various levels, then donned the finished product the "par" for the level. The idea behind this was to challenge the player to finish the area faster than Romero himself. Little did he know just how profound an effect it would have, giving birth to an entire community dedicated to heavily optimized speedrunning.

4. Level one of 'Doom I' is a map that takes a "get to know the game and ease you in gently" approach. With what weapon do you start the first level of this PS1 game, 'Hangar'?

From Quiz 'Doom I': The Opening Levels

Answer: Pistol

As with most games you start off on a very easy level that doesn't contain monsters in abundance, with the simplest weapon available. The pistol isn't very efficient but until you run across a shotgun, the next weapon available, you have to make do with it or if you want you can use your fists!

5. Which monster is the most basic enemy in the game?

From Quiz "Doom 3" Monsters of Hell

Answer: Zombie

The Zombie is the basic enemy of the game just like many other horror games like "Resident Evil". They are one of the easiest enemies to kill and have generally low health. The most you have to worry about Zombies are the ones that carry weapons like flashlights and wrenches.

6. The fourth episode of "Ultimate Doom" is called what?

From Quiz PC Classic "Doom"

Answer: Thy Flesh Consumed

"Knee Deep In The Dead" is Episode 1, which was also available in the Shareware version of the original "Doom". "The Shores Of Hell" and "Inferno" were Episodes 2 and 3 respectively which were only available with the full version. "Thy Flesh Consumed" appeared in the later version which was upgraded to "Ultimate Doom".

7. Who was the evil scientist who planned to unleash the demons of Hell into the world?

From Quiz A "Doom 3" Nightmare

Answer: Malcolm Betruger

Betruger was the head of the teleportation experiments on Mars, but he had other motives. Counselor Swann was sent in to investigate Union Aerospace Corporation claims against Betruger, only he was far too late.

8. "Same as the Former Humans, but much meaner and tougher. These walking shotguns provide you with a few extra holes if you're not careful!" What is another way to describe Doom Guy's former superiors in the military, turned enemies?

From Quiz "DOOM" - Who's That Monster?

Answer: Shotgun Guy

Consistently having just as much health as Former Humans, Shotgun Guys are similarly easy to handle individually, and only pose a threat in large numbers. They will generally die very quickly to anything other than the pistol or unarmed melee strike.

9. What is the first weapon Doomguy can pick up at the beginning of the game?

From Quiz "DOOM 1993" on Funtrivia

Answer: Shotgun

Doomguy will begin the game with a pistol, and the shotgun presents itself to him very early in the Hangar map. Generally, the shotgun will be the first weapon the player picks up at the beginning of each Mission.

10. The first secret level in "Doom II" takes place in what looks like an older game created by id Software. What is this game?

From Quiz The Ultimate "Doom" Trivia

Answer: Wolfenstein

"Wolfenstein" was id Software's first big success. It was also the first first-person shooter game, as we know them today. This level in "Doom" is extremely similar to a level in "Wolfenstein" and even includes Nazi enemies.

11. In 'Hangar', level one of 'Doom I', the first weapon of any real significance that you pick up is dropped by a sergeant. This zombie is a stronger version of the zombieman or former human. What weapon does the sergeant drop upon death?

From Quiz 'Doom I': The Opening Levels

Answer: Shotgun

The shotgun is one of the best guns to use, not just in the opening levels of 'Doom I' but throughout the game. Initially you have a maximum capacity of fifty shells for your shotgun but when you pick up a backpack, which are pretty easy to find, your maximum capacity jumps to one hundred shells for the shotgun. Picking up a backpack will also increase your maximum ammunition capacity for all other guns in your arsenal.

12. Which non-boss enemy is the rarest in the game?

From Quiz "Doom 3" Monsters of Hell

Answer: Flaming Zombie

You only ever face two Flaming Zombies in the entire game. You encounter him near flaming gas leaks in Mars City.

13. This particular monster is red in colour and has an uncanny resemblance to a cherry. It shoots pink fireballs and loses its eye upon death. What is the name given to this flying ball?

From Quiz PS1: 'Doom I' and 'Doom II' - Monsters

Answer: Cacodemon

The cacodemon is a monster frequently seen during your journey through the multitude of levels in the game. Not a particularly difficult creature to kill but, when in a group, it can severely damage your health percentage! It is also one of those creatures which, when on its own, you can risk using the chainsaw to eliminate. If you are short on ammunition and need to kill this creature, your fist or chainsaw works fine and it only takes a matter of seconds. It really does leave an impressive blob on the floor when killed!

14. Sever The Wicked (E4M3) from "Ultimate Doom" contains the most secret sectors of any "Classic Doom" level. How many does it contain?

From Quiz PC Classic "Doom"

Answer: 22

Most of the secret sectors in this level are contained in one area behind the North door in the octagonal shaped room with candles in four corners. Unfortunately only 90% secret is possible in normal play due to two of the four corners being flagged as secret.

15. According to a secret document stored on a Mars computer terminal, what type of blood is best to use when opening sacrificial portals?

From Quiz A "Doom 3" Nightmare

Answer: Virgin Blood

This information can be downloaded to your PDA at the end of the Delta Complex level from a terminal with a pentagram on it. Also remember, goat blood (not as good as virgin blood) can be no more than three days old!

16. "Sorta like a shaved gorilla, except with horns, a big head, lots of teeth, and harder to kill. Don't get too close or they'll rip your fraggin' head off." What is the official name for these iconic pink monsters?

From Quiz "DOOM" - Who's That Monster?

Answer: Demon

Colloquially known as "Pinky", these demons are only capable of attacking up close, but when they do, they hit hard. They're not the absolute tankiest, but they have noticeably more HP than Former Humans, Shotgun Guys and Imps. They are similarly threatening in big numbers.

17. At the end of the first Mission, the player will encounter their first boss battle. Who is the boss of the first Mission?

From Quiz "DOOM 1993" on Funtrivia

Answer: Two Barons of Hell

Upon entering the star shaped battle arena, the two Barons of Hell will emerge from two pillars near the middle of the area. They deal a ton of damage with their acid splash attacks and are pretty tanky, so strafing around them to dodge and simultaneously keep fire on them is recommended.

18. Almost all of the weapons in the "Doom" series use ammo that also work with other weapons. However, there is one weapon that uses its own special type of ammo and will not work with any other type of ammo but its own. Which weapon is that?

From Quiz The Weapons of "Doom"

Answer: Rocket launcher

The rocket launcher is the only weapon that requires rockets. All of the other weapons can share their ammo supply with other weapons. The pistol and the chaingun both use bullets, the shotgun and the double-barreled shotgun both use shells, and the plasma rifle and the BFG both use energy cells. Technically, there was no other weapon other than the shotgun that could share its ammo with other weapons before the release of "Doom 2" since the first "Doom" did not have the double-barreled shotgun.

19. The super secret level also includes a reference to an older id Software game as well. This is hinted at in the message just before you enter the level. Which part of the message foreshadows what is to come?

From Quiz The Ultimate "Doom" Trivia

Answer: "You'd better blaze through this one!"

"Congratulations..." doesn't really mean much and the other two are actually from different levels. This quote however hints that you are going to have to face Billy BLAZE and kill him. He is also known as Commander Keen and stars in the game series titled after him.

20. Which level has different coloured and textured demons from the rest of the game?

From Quiz "Doom 3" Monsters of Hell

Answer: Hell

The Hellknight, the Imp and the Zombie all have different colours and the Zxombies have a completely different shape. This only occurs in the Hell level and as soon as you leave, they return to their normal versions.

21. In Ultra Violence mode, which monster makes the least amount of appearances on "Doom II"?

From Quiz PC Classic "Doom"

Answer: The Icon of Sin (aka The Demon Spitter)

There is only one Icon of Sin in the level of the same name, there are four Commander Keen's in the form of a hanging effigy in the level 'Grosse'. The Cyberdemon and the Spider-Mastermind make five appearances each; The Cyberdemon appears once each in 'Tricks and Traps', 'Refueling Base', 'Gotcha!', 'The Living End' and 'Grosse'. The Spider-Mastermind appears once each in 'The Crusher', 'Gotcha!', 'Barrels O'Fun' and twice in 'The Spirit World'.

22. What do you get if you get the high score in the "Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3" minigame?

From Quiz A "Doom 3" Nightmare

Answer: Your vacation docked by two days

You can play this game in the Mars City lounge before hell breaks loose. It takes quite a while to get the high score of 25,000 points, but the hilarious message you get is worth it!

23. What is the name of the monster who doesn't shoot any projectiles, but will rush the player in a frenzied state?

From Quiz General "DOOM" (1993) Quiz

Answer: Demon

Also commonly known as a "pinky", "bull demon", or "pig", the Demon is capable of doing large amounts of damage, especially if the player is stuck in a corner.

24. "Tough as a dump truck and nearly as big, these Goliaths are the worst things on two legs since Tyrannosaurus Rex." The guardian(s) of the Phobos Anomaly are otherwise known as what?

From Quiz "DOOM" - Who's That Monster?

Answer: Baron of Hell

Barons of Hell are potent fighters from both far away and up close, while also requiring significant firepower to kill. They were first featured as a mini boss in original "DOOM's" eighth mission on the first episode, as the franchise's first ever boss fight. The development team nicknames these specific variants the "Bruiser Brothers", citing the Hammer Bros from "Super Mario" as inspiration for them.

25. Upon defeating the first Mission's boss and reaching the end of the area, what will happen?

From Quiz "DOOM 1993" on Funtrivia

Answer: Doomguy will be killed

After slaying the Barons of Hell, the roof of the battlefield will be removed as the platform the player stands on rises, revealing a large teleportation platform they must step on to end the level. Upon stepping on it, Doomguy will be spawned into a dark room with an endless amount of enemies in it, assortments of demons beyond what the eye can see. This fight is not winnable and will result in Doomguy dying. This is the catalyst for the second mission, as Doomguy will die and get sent to Hell, where the gameplay will pick up.

26. Who appears in the ending picture of the "Ultimate Doom?"

From Quiz The Ultimate "Doom" Trivia

Answer: Daisy

Who could forget the ending of "Doom"? The original version ends with the protagonist's pet bunny, Daisy, on a stick. The ending of "Ultimate Doom" shows a picture of the protagonist leaving with what is left of Daisy. The list of all monsters appears in "Doom II".

27. Which boss has the most devastating attack in the entire game?

From Quiz "Doom 3" Monsters of Hell

Answer: Cyberdemon

The Cyberdemon can do an attack that does 400 damage and instantly kills you. The stomp or smack attack can kill you instantly so you must always be on the move.

28. Occasionally, the monsters in 'Doom' will fight amongst themselves. However, there is one particular monster that no other creature, bar yourself, will attack. Which?

From Quiz PS1: 'Doom I' and 'Doom II' - Monsters

Answer: Pain Elemental

The pain elemental is probably one of the most weird yet enigmatic creatures in the entirety of 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'. It makes surreal noises and shoots the most irritating creatures, lost souls, from its mouth. It looks worse than what it actually is and when it comes to killing this enigma, it is usually non-problematic.

29. In normal playing conditions what is the minimum secret score obtainable on the "Doom II" level 'Dead Simple'?

From Quiz PC Classic "Doom"

Answer: 100%

'Dead Simple' only has one secret, which is the rising stair which surrounds the exit platform and thus is impossible to avoid in normal play. There is a deathmatch exit which can be reached by using the walk through walls cheat and this will give you 0%. Additionally there is a tool assist which can be used to jump over the secret.

30. What do the researches call the skeletal, rocket launcher-wielding demons?

From Quiz A "Doom 3" Nightmare

Answer: Revenants

Watch out for these guys, their rockets track you! Their names are revealed to you in Delta Labs at the stasis chambers.
