Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the secrets hidden within "Final Fantasy IX" is that Dagger's real name is Sarah. Also hidden within the game is the name of Dagger's real mother. What is that name?

Answer: Jane

As it turned out, Queen Brahne was not the mother of Dagger. Dagger had come from a summoner tribe on the northern continent where she lived with her mother and father. Many had questioned whether Dagger and Eiko were related. It's possible, but no direct clues from the game say they are family.
2. It is mentioned only once the age of Kuja. How many years older is he than his brother?

Answer: Eight

Garland says in the walls of Pandemonium, "About 24 years ago, I gave life to a Genome that was much like you." So, Kuja is 24 years old. Zidane, who is Kuja's brother, is 16. Twenty-four minus sixteen is eight. Kuja is eight years older than his brother, Zidane.

Many people list Square-Enix's villains as "unknown" in age, but minor clues can give a pretty close estimate to their birth. For example, Sephiroth is 27-30 years old, Sin is 1000 years old (That was mentioned directly), Kuja is 24, Ansem is probably in his early 40's, and Shuyin was around 17 when he died. Take a closer look at the dialogue in these games and see what ages you come up with!
3. What is the missing line in this monologue? "Could she have betrayed me? Nay, ne'er would my love speak false. I must have faith. ___________________________! As the sun lends me no ear, I pray instead to the twin moons! I beseech thee, wondrous moonlight, grany me my only wish! Bring my beloved Dagger to me!"

Answer: She shall appear if I only believe!

This was said by Zidane at the very end of the game. The quote, "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt," is from Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The quote, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so," is from Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the quote, "So, the sun is our enemy too.

The eastern sky grows bright," is said in the same scene in "Final Fantasy IX" but comes just slightly earlier.
4. There is a Greek myth that goes like this: "A Phrygian king was punished in the lower world by being placed in the midst of a lake whose waters reached to his chin but receded whenever he attempted to quench his thirst, while over his head hung branches laden with choice fruit which likewise receded whenever he stretched out his hand to grasp them." (Myth provided by Dictionary.com) How does this myth relate to "Final Fantasy IX"?

Answer: The king's name was Tantalus, the name of a group of thieves in "Final Fantasy IX"

Tantalus in "Final Fantasy IX" was a group of thieves disguised as a theater company. The members of Tantalus included Blank, Cinna, Marcus, Zidane, Baku, Zenero, Benero, and Ruby. There are a few others, but their roles are very small.

The crime that the King committed in the Greek myth is unknown. There are many different stories regarding what he did to deserve such fate, but none are confirmed as being the 'official' reason.
5. "Final Fantasy IX", being the last game on the Playstation One console, had numerous references to previous "Final Fantasy" games. One disc three, the party faces Garland, which is a direct reference to a boss in which game?

Answer: "Final Fantasy"

Garland was the very first boss in the original "Final Fantasy". Many other references existed as well. A few of the more notable ones will be listed here by game:
"Final Fantasy"- The four fiends, Marilith, Lich, Kraken, and Tiamat and Matoya, who was seen during the quest to make Cid medicine.
"Final Fantasy II"- The story Ramuh tells to Dagger is very similar to events taking place in "Final Fantasy II"
"Final Fantasy IV"- Kain's Lance, referencing Cecil's friend Kain and Fabool, the name of a kingdom in "Final Fantasy IV".
"Final Fantasy VII"-In the weapons shop in Lindblum, Zidane sees a long sword and mentions "a spikey-haired guy" who once wielded one of these. This was in reference to Cloud, who had very spikey hair and wielded a long sword.
6. "Final Fantasy IX" is very rich in its storytelling; It even goes so deep as to reveal the history of Gaia and Terra from the beginning of time. One of the first races to inhabit the planet Gaia was the Summoner's Tribe. Surprisingly, the Summoner's Tribe has much in common with the ancient races of other Playstation "Final Fantasies". (For example, the Cetra in "Final Fantasy VII" and the Centra in "Final Fantasy VIII") What is one thing that this tribe had in common with the other ancient races?

Answer: They were all practically wiped out by a mysterious extraterrestrial force

Of course, in "Final Fantasy IX", the Summoner's Tribe was destroyed by the Invinsible, from the planet Terra. A few summoners survived this as both Eiko and Dagger are member of this tribe. In "Final Fantasy VII" the Cetra were destroyed by Jenova, described later in that game as a "Calamity from the skies" Some Cetra survived as well, however; and in "Final Fantasy VIII" the Centra race was killed by the Lunar Cry. All of these instances were extraterrestrial forces. These are the reasons the other choices were incorrect:
1. "They were the only race that could successfully summon." In "Final Fantasy VII" and "Final Fantasy VIII", any race could summon.
2. "In each game, the last member of that race was always killed." This only happened in "Final Fantasy VII" when Aeris, the last of the Cetra, was killed by Sephiroth.
3. "All the protagonists of these games were decendents of the ancient races." Cloud in "Final Fantasy VII" grew up in Nibelheim with his mother and was not a Cetra. Squall in "Final Fantasy VIII" was born to Laguna Loire and Raine and was not a Centra; and Zidane in "Final Fantasy IX" was a Genome from Terra.
7. "I Want to be Your Canary" was written by what playwright within the world of Gaia?

Answer: Lord Avon

Feanor and Ulmo are names from J.R.R. Tolkien's books about Middle Earth, namely "The Silmarillion". Behling is the name of a Geology professor at West Virginia University.

Lord Avon was the most popular playwright in Alexandria and "I Want to be Your Canary" was the most popular of Lord Avon's plays in Alexandria.
8. "When the night sky wears the moon as its pendant, I shall await you at the dock." Who did not find this letter at the dock in Alexandria?

Answer: Eiko

Eiko did not find the letter. She wrote it! (With the help of Dr. Tot!) Some might say that this letter finally got Beatrix and Steiner to admit their love for one another. Blank just thought some strange woman was admiring him from afar.
9. When Regent Cid cheats on Hilda, she turns him into an Oglop and runs away. Later, she is rescued from Kuja and makes amends with her husband. What does she threaten to turn Cid into if he ever cheats again?

Answer: A Hedgehog Pie

Thankfully, Cid is never turned into a hedgehog pie. At least, during the course of the game, he's not.
10. What did Dagger do after she said, "Zidane... Remember the way I was...for me."?

Answer: She cut her hair.

The action of cutting her long hair was a symbolic gesture of becoming a new person. Before she cut, she said to Zidane, "When my mother was still alive... My primary concern was how to talk and look like a princess. Those were the only things on my mind... That didn't change when my mother died and I was about to become a queen... I only thought about how to look and act like a queen. I don't think the people will accept me as their queen the way I am right now." After this moment, Garnet became a stronger, more confident person.
