Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is "Frogger" a video game?

Answer: Yes, it is a classic game first made by Sega

"Frogger" is considered a classic arcade video game. It was first made for, and distributed by, Sega in 1981. By 2005, more than twenty million copies had been sold worldwide.
2. Why was the original "Legend of Zelda" game considered so advanced?

Answer: It was the first game you could save and return later without using passwords

"The Legend of Zelda" was the first video game not to need passwords so that you could return to the same point in a game. I well remember the hassle of having hand-written lists of passwords. If you made one mistake, all of your progress was lost.
3. In video games, what does "F.P.S." stand for?

Answer: First Person Shooter

This is your basic "point and shoot" game, whether shooting ducks, zombies, "the enemy" or balloons. The earliest versions were made in the early 1970s and have grown more sophisticated since.
4. What type of creature is Bowser?

Answer: Koopa

Bowser is also known as King Koopa and is the main antagonist in the "Mario" games of Nintendo. His name in the original Japanese version means Demon King. Despite being cast as the bad guy in the games, my daughter informs me that he is her favourite character.
5. Why is that big monkey called Donkey Kong?

Answer: The Japanese equate "donkey" with stupid

With games that start out in the Japanese market, translations, similar names or country appropriate names are given to characters for the English speaking market. The name "Donkey Kong" was chosen for the stubborn and stupid aspects of the animal. By the time the apparently odd name was pointed out, it was too late to change it. I like it though.
6. I was playing an online video game and my daughter said, "Do not forget the Easter Eggs" and it was June. Why was this relevant to what I was doing?

Answer: It is the name given to hidden clues or jokes

Examples of "easter eggs" have been hidden extra levels, jokes, limericks, cheat codes to save the game sooner, the name of the game writer, photographs of the game writers and advertising for other games. In hidden object type games there are sometimes egg-shaped spots that will give extra points, but beware! They may just be spots and lose you time if you click on them.
7. I was on eBay and about to put in a bid for the latest version of "Mario Kart". It was number 64 and my daughter pointed out a problem. What was it?

Answer: It was for the Nintendo 64 which was replaced by the Game Cube in 2001

Nintendo started out in 1889 manufacturing playing cards and despite attempting diversions into hotels, televisions and taxis (among other things) remained in the games business ever since. Along with other manufacturers, Nintendo update their game consoles and you need to check before you buy that the systems are compatible. One example is that Nintendo 3DS games will play on 2DS consoles, but not on DS Lites.
8. I was bemoaning the lack of cats in video games and my daughter told me to look out for "Garfield". Now I know that he started out in a newspaper and moved on to become both a TV and movie star. Is he also in a video game?

Answer: Yes

Sony brought out their first "Garfield" video game for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) in 2004. It was not very popular with reviewers, probably because the fat, lasagne-loving feline was set several housework tasks and Odie was no help at all.

Nintendo released "Garfield Gets Real" in 2008. The game was based on the latest movie and proved very popular.

"Create with Garfield" was the first game featuring our feline friend, released in 1986 for the Apple II and the Commodore 64.
9. According to an Oxford University study released in August 2004, playing video games is actually good for children. How long is suggested?

Answer: Up to an hour a day

"Children who play video games for up to an hour a day are happier, more sociable and less hyperactive than those who don't play at all, research has found." This was reported in the Daily Telegraph 4th August, 2014. Further research is proposed to decide upon the best type of video games to be played. I bet they get a queue around the block!
10. What was the profession of William Higinbotham, the man who invented the first ever video game in 1958, as a byproduct of his military research?

Answer: Physicist

William "Willy" A. Higinbotham (1910 to 1994) wrote "Tennis for Two", which became known as "Pong", in 1958. Originally it was just waves on an oscilloscope, but when linked up to a television it was turned into a game. Who knew that military research could be so much fun?
