Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You will need an Apple device for this and a bit of rhythm (so that counts me out). The object of this musical game is to tap coloured balls as they cross a line at the bottom of the screen. What game series is this?

Answer: Tap Tap

These games were developed by Tapulous for the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc. First released in 2008, in their first year, over 35 million copies had been sold.
2. In this stealth game series, you are usually a special forces operative called Solid Snake. In the first game your task is to find a bipedal walking tank. What is the name of the game series?

Answer: Metal Gear

Created by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami of Japan, over thirty million copies have been sold since its introduction in 1987. The series is credited with starting the stealth game genre; the other games listed are also examples of this genre. 'Metal Gear' is the name of the walking tank.
3. This game is a sci-fi franchise created by Bungie and is a bit of a first-person shooter. It started off on Xbox, Microsoft's video game console brand. What is the name of this game series?

Answer: Halo

This has been a major success for Microsoft with over fifty million games sold in the twelve years since launch in 2001, which translates into several billion dollars of sales. It is still considered as one of the best first-person shooters for video game consoles. "Halo Wars", released in 2009, changed direction from first-person shooter to real-time strategy game.
4. Does your brain hurt? It might do after this kind of game. How are you with mathematical puzzles? Being familiar with Sudoku may help. What is the name of the game?

Answer: Brain Age

This game series started on the Nintendo DS as its platform. It can trace its roots to Japanese neuroscientist Ryuta Kawashima and his 2003 book "Train Your Brain: 60 Days to a Better Brain" which postulated that doing some simple mathematical problems and reading aloud could stave off the effects of ageing on the brain. So that's where I've gone wrong!
5. If you are feeling a bit creative then this is the game for you. Using textured cubes, you get to build your own world. What, you may ask, has a photo of a ship to do with this? Well, its purpose is to deal with explosive devices. Which means that this game is what?

Answer: Minecraft

Swede Markus Persson and his video game developer company Mojang (which is Swedish for 'gadget') are responsible for this one. It was first publicly released in 2009. It is a 'sandbox' game which is non-linear in nature and where the player has the tools to modify the artificial world he/she inhabits as well as the game-play rules.

As such the game-play can be very flexible. A linear game would be one where every player follows the same fixed progression of challenges.
6. What is the name of this arcade game where you are tasked with helping some amphibians getting over a road and a river whilst avoiding all sorts of hazards?

Answer: Frogger

This one is a bit of an oldie, dating back to 1981 and another one from Konami, the Japanese entertainment company who developed the "Metal Gear" franchise. The game was adapted for most of the main platforms at the time and "Frogger" has spawned over twenty-five sequels as well as many unofficial clones.
7. Not blessed with a singing voice for karaoke? Then this game could be for you. Time to show us what you can do with your guitar-shaped controller. And the name of the game is which of these?

Answer: Guitar Hero

My failure to master this game is probably why I never became a rock star. Mind you, the game has only been available since 2005 when it was first developed by RedOctane and Harmonix Music Systems. It is a bit like karaoke except you use a guitar controller rather than your voice. RedOctane were helped by their experience of working on Konami's 1998 "GuitarFreaks" arcade game.
8. The first twelve games see you fighting your way through World War Two in this first-person shooter. Starting off with the Office of Strategic Services (basically a spy), the game play has changed to more of a front line role in more recent games. In what game can you earn this gong?

Answer: Medal of Honor

Originally developed in 1999 for the PlayStation game console, there are fourteen installments to this franchise (as of January 2013). A variety of developers have been involved, creating follow-on versions for different platforms. The publisher Electronic Arts has been involved in all of them and Stephen Spielberg (the film director) is credited as the creator of the game.

The Medal of Honor is also America's highest military honour.
9. Now we have a Japanese anime series where the player is wearing a robotic Mobile Suit to fight his/her wars. What is the name of the series?

Answer: Gundam

The video game series is, in reality, a minor part of the "Gundam" franchise, although there is still a long list of video games using "Gundam" characters. Starting off in 1979 as a TV series called "Mobile Suit Gundam", the franchise reaches into movies, manga (a genre of Japanese comic book often for adults), novels and a collectible card game, amongst others.

There are prequels, sequels, side stories and countless different time-lines. It is big business in Japan.
10. If you like pets then this game series is for you. Instead of having to look after a real dog, you can look after a virtual pet with your Nintendo instead. Which game allows you to play with, pet, train and walk your virtual dog?

Answer: Nintendogs

The name no doubt reflects that it was designed for the Nintendo DS game console. The built-in microphone allows you to issue commands to your virtual pet. You can then find out if your virtual pet ignores you in the same way that your real one does. You also get to pet your dog through the touch screen. Fortunately Nintendo have not yet found a way for the dog to bite back.
