Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a 'freeze arrow'?

Answer: An arrow requiring that a player leave a foot on the designated pad

As you move through the difficulties, you'll come across various freeze arrows which require that your foot stay in that position while the other foot does the moving. Freeze arrows look like a stack of regular arrows, and you only need to remain on them until the stack disappears. If you lift your foot or you miss the beginning of the stack, it will count as N.G. (No Good). On some "Dance Dance Revolution" games, the Freeze Arrow can be turned off so that you don't need to play them.
2. The Gamecube version of "Dance Dance Revolution" features Mario characters and remixed Mario songs. What exactly is 'Mush Mode'?

Answer: A feature that changes select arrows into various enemies from the "Mario" series

When Mush Mode is enabled, some of the arrows in the song being played are transformed into enemies. Some of these do different things. For example, Goombas need to be stepped on once while Koopas need to be stepped on twice. Mush Mode also appears in songs throughout Story Mode. "Mario Mix" also features various mini-games and four unlockable songs. Unlike other "Dance Dance Revolution" titles, the game has difficulties ranging from 'Very Easy' to 'Super Hard'.

The songs are considerably less difficult than those in other "Dance Dance Revolution" titles.
3. Naoki Maeda is one of the more famous artists for the series. Which of these Naoki songs was not found in PS2's "Dance Dance Revolution Extreme"?

Answer: Passion of Love

Naoki Maeda is one of the most famous names found in the "Dance Dance Revolution" series since he provides numerous songs to each new game. For example, "Dance Dance Revolution MAX 2" has seventeen songs by Naoki in one form or another. Naoki also uses many aliases including "RE-VENGE", "Luv UNLIMITED", and "Crystal Aliens".

There is also a female character named Naoki in the series which players can use as an avatar. Naoki has worked on the "Dance Dance Revolution" series as well as in games such as "Salamander" and "DrumMania". "Passion of Love" was found in "Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2".
4. Which of these is not a version of the popular (and often difficult-to-play) song, "Max"?

Answer: Vision of Maxx

The Max/Maxx songs are regarded as some of the more difficult songs in the series due to the intense steps and BPM. "Fascination Maxx" first appeared in "Dance Dance Revolution Supernova". On the PS2, it is found in the penultimate planet of Dance Master Mode, and in the arcade version it is available as the difficult Extra Stage. "Maxx Unlimited" debuted in "DDRMAX2" as a trance song that features more oppotunities for jumps than its predecessor, "Max 300" which debuted in the "6th Mix" at 300 BPM.
5. In many versions of the game, songs can be played by a difficulty such as 'Light', 'Standard', or 'Heavy'. Often, these are also split into another rating system between 1 and 10. What symbol is used in this rating system?

Answer: Footprints

Songs in the games can be played on (usually) up to five different ratings that range from Beginner to Heavy and Challenge modes. These can be further determined by their footprint rating. Beginner songs are usually one or two footprint, while Heavy and Challenge songs will have up to ten of these.

This way, players can determine whether or not a Light song is actually as difficult as a Heavy song (like some actually are). Some Light songs actually have ten footprints, the highest difficulty you can get, due to their intense step patterns. 10-foot ratings are termed 'apocalyptic', and the first song to hold the title was "Max 300".
6. The first "DDR" game to allow this hardware to be used on the PS2 was "Dance Dance Revolution Extreme". What component is this?

Answer: Eye-toy

Following the release of the Eye-Toy PS2 component, players could hook up using a small USB camera to play fun, interactive games. The designers of "Dance Dance Revolution" 'eye-toyed' with the idea and created minigames that players could try on the future "DDR" titles such as "Extreme", "Extreme 2", and "Supernova". Players could simply set up the camera and watch themselves on the TV screen.
7. Which of these is not an arcade version of "Dance Dance Revolution"?

Answer: Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party

"Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party" was the third "DDR" title to be released on a Nintendo system (following the Disney and "Mario Mix" versions). It also made use of the revolutionary Wii Remote controllers. "Extreme" was released on both the PS2 console and in the arcade, though the arcade version had a wider selection of songs. Notable titles from this system included "bag", "The Legend of MAX", "Sakura", and "Max.". "Supernova 2" was releasd in 2007 while "4th Mix" debuted in August 2000 with the song "B4U" by Naoki.
8. Where did the popular "Dance Dance Revolution" band Captain Jack hail from?

Answer: Germany

This German Europop band released numerous hits that later appeared on the "DDR" series of games, and even following the death of the lead singer, Franky Gee, the band continued to appear (as the song "Centerfold" appeared on "Supernova"). Their song "Captain Jack" is one of the most popular songs in the series.

It was produced in 1996, and appeared in "Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix" in 1999.
9. In the "Dance Dance Revolution" world, what is 'Oni'?

Answer: A difficulty

'Oni' translates to 'Demon' or 'Ogre' in Japanese, and those that are able to master this difficulty level can be considered the ultimate dancers in the "DDR" world. The term was introduced in "DDRMAX2" and it is often a tad bit more diffcult than the Challenge and Heavy difficulties.

In an Oni course, players can only mess up four times by getting any step below 'Great' before they receive an automatic game over.
10. Which artist was first to appear on a console version of "Dance Dance Revolution"?

Answer: Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue was first featured in "DDRMAX2" for her song "Love at First Sight", the third single from her 2002 album, "Fever". She also had a song from her seventh album, "Body Language" featured on "Dance Dance Revolution Universe" for the Xbox 360. This track was called "Slow".
Kelly Clarkson, the winner of the first "American Idol" season, appeared on the Playstation 2 console's "Dance Dance Revolution Supernova" with her hit "Since U Been Gone".
Geri Halliwell, perhaps better known as Ginger Spice of "The Spice Girls", appeared on "Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 4" with her solo cover of "It's Raining Men".
In the later games of the series, songs by record-producing artists are often accompanied by the real music video playing in the background.
