Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many times do you fight Bowser in "Super Mario Bros."

Answer: One

You only fight the real King of all Koopas, Bowser, once, at the end of World 8. The seven previous Bowsers are normal enemies that Bowser transformed into himself by his black magic. To discover what enemy you are facing, you must kill the Fake Bowser with fireballs. The Fake Bowser's true identity will be revealed when he falls into the lava.

Here is the total list:
* World 1: Goomba
* World 2: Koopa Troopa
* World 3: Buzzy Beetle
* World 4: Spiny
* World 5: Lakitu
* World 6: Blooper
* World 7: Hammer Brother
2. What level in "Super Mario Bros." introduces those notorious Koopas, the Hammer Bros.?

Answer: 3-1

Unless you are Big Mario or Fire Mario, you will have a very hard time bringing the Hammer Brothers down by jumping on them, due to the very large number of hammers they throw. It is best to simply avoid them and run under them. "Super Mario Bros 2" ("The Lost Levels" outside of Japan) features Hammer Bros. that are actually mobile.
3. Including Bowser, how many unique enemies do Mario and Luigi face in "Super Mario Bros."? Anything that hurts or has the potential to hurt the Mario Bros. is considered an enemy. The Red and Green Koopa Troopas are counted as one enemy.

Answer: 17

There are seventeen unique enemies in all. These are: Blooper, Bill Blaster, Bullet Bill, Buzzy Beetle, Cheep Cheep, Fireball, Goomba, Hamer Bros., Koop Paratroopa, Koopa Troopa, Lakitu, Piranha Plant, Podoboo, Spiny, and Spiny Egg. The game also features both the fake Bowser and the real Bowser.

Only Bill Blaster does not hurt Mario directly. Rather, he fires Bullet Bills at Mario.
4. What world does the Red Snifit appear in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

Answer: 3-3

According to the game manual, the Red Sniffit is "a member of the "8-bits." He wears a mask and spits the bullets of evil dreams from his mouth." What is notable about the Red Sniffit is he is truly alone in the World of Dreams. He appears only once, in World 3-3, where he walks off a high platform onto lower platforms.
5. According to the game manual, which the four major bosses in "Super Mario Bros 2." was originally an outsider to the World of Dreams and impressed Wart with his cunning?

Answer: Tryclyde

Wart apparently brought in some outside help when he conquered the World of Dreams. The story is he created monsters with the Dream Machine. However, here is what the manual says about Tryclyde:

"He was once an outsider, but now he is one of Wart's helpers since he impressed Wart with his cunning brain and offensive capabilities which are three times normal strength."
6. How many types of vegetables does the Dream Machine shoot out in the final battle against Wart on "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

Answer: Three

The Dream machine shoots out three vegetables: a large turnip that appears Asian, a Pumpkin, and a vegetable that looks similar to a laboratory breaker with eyes. The pumpkin and the breaker do not appear in any previous stages. The Asian vegetable appears only in 7-1 and 7-2.
7. In the "Super Mario All Stars" version of "Super Mario Bros. 3", Ludwig Von Koopa transformed the king into a Yoshi. What did he transform the king into in the original NES version?

Answer: Venus Fire Trap

For some reason when Nintendo released "Super Mario Bros. 3" as part of "Super Mario All Stars" they changed what the kings were transformed too. Here is a complete list of what the kings were and what they were changed too:

World 1: Dog to Cobrat("Super Mario Bros. 2")
World 2: Spider to Hoopster ("Super Mario Bros. 2")
World 3: Spike to Dino-Rhino ("Super Mario World")
World 4: Dinosaur to Donkey Kong Jr.
World 5: Bird to Albatross ("Super Mario Bros. 2")
World 6: Seal to Monty Mole ("Super Mario World")
World 7: Venus Fire Trap to Yoshi

According to Miyamoto, the idea of Yoshi (though not necessarily his present day design) dates back to the original "Super Mario Bros." but was not included for technological reasons. In "Super Mario Bros. 3" Miyamoto wanted to include Yoshi but did not, waiting for "Super Mario World". Yoshi finally gets his appearance in the remake.

Another idea that did not come to fruition was having Mario changed into a centaur.
8. Fifteen unused levels have been discovered programmed into the "Super Mario Bros 3" game code. Two enemies are present in these levels that are not found in the regular game. The primary difference with these enemies are their sprite coloring. The first is a Green Para-Beetle. What is the second enemy?

Answer: Golden Cheep Cheep

Fifteen unused levels have been discovered programmed into the "Super Mario Bros 3" game code. Some of these levels heavily resemble levels present in the final game. A handful are unfinished. One is simply several different versions of a Tanooki Suit bonus room. The Golden Cheep Cheeps move faster than regular Cheep Cheeps.
9. How many boss chambers are there for Bowser in "Super Mario Bros. 3"?

Answer: Four

There are four boss chambers that feature Bowser in the last level of "Super Mario Bros. 3". There are two main chambers that you enter through doors. Once you enter either one of these chambers, if you have the P-Wing you can fly to the left to another chamber that makes some changes to how large Bowser's bridge is.
10. How many times must you defeat "Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels" on the original Famicom to unlock the four bonus worlds?

Answer: Eight

"Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels" is the hardest title of the four eight bit Mario games. If you defeat the game eight times, you unlock four bonus, even more difficult worlds. Each time you defeat the game you get one star on the title screen You only have to beat the game once in "Super Mario All Stars" to unlock these levels.
