Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1987, Capcom released "Mega Man". How many direct sequels to the original "Mega Man" did Capcom publish on the NES in the United States?

Answer: Four

Between 1987 and 1993, Capcom published four sequels, "Mega Man II", "Mega Man III", "Mega Man IV", and "Mega Man V". In 1994, they released "Mega Man VI" for the Famicom. As Capcom was developing the first "Mega Man X" game at the time, they opted NOT to published "Mega Man VI" in the United States or the PAL region. Rather than letting the game go unreleased, Nintendo published "Mega Man VI" in the United States. "Mega Man VI" was never released in the PAL region.
2. In the first stage of Dr. Wily's Castle on "Mega Man II" you are required to use a certain item in order to cross the screen. Without this item you cannot progress through the game. What is the item?

Answer: Item 1

Like the original "Mega Man", "Mega Man II" requires use of a special item to proceed through the last levels. You must use Item 1 to cross the giant void so you can reach a ladder. Unlike the original "Mega Man", "Mega Man II" gives you all three items after beating three specific Robot Masters. On the first game you had to get the item in the Elec Man stage and you may have passed it by, leaving you stuck on Dr. Wily's Castle.
3. Which game has a pause feature by pressing "Select"?

Answer: Mega Man

"Mega Man" features a number of oddities that were not continued in the five sequels. It is the only "Mega Man" game to have a score. There are no Energy Tanks. When reentering a beaten stage, the Robot Master is waiting in the lair. In subsequent games when you beat the robot masters and replay the stage the lairs are empty.

It is also the only "Mega Man" title that features enemies once you make it to the lair door. Some of the lair passages are also vertical, and all lair passages are longer than one screen long.

In the five NES sequels, the lair passages are one screen long and feature no obstacles to overcome.
4. After beating the eight Robot Masters in "Mega Man III", four new stages open up. The four stages each feature two Robot Masters known as Doc Robots. These are the eight Robot Masters from "Mega Man II", given new bodies but otherwise behaving identical to their "Mega Man II" counterparts. Where does Quick Man appear in "Mega Man III"?

Answer: 2nd Doc Robot on Spark Man Stage

The introduction of the Doc Robots make "Mega Man III" the longest of the original six "Mega Man" titles. It is also interesting to play revamped stages as well as using weapons from one "Mega Man" game against Robot Masters from another "Mega Man" game altogether.

This is one tradition I wished they would have implemented in the other three NES titles, but unfortunately Capcom did not.
5. In "Mega Man V", each of the eight stages have one letter of the title. By collecting all eight of the letters you get a special weapon. What stage contains the letter "V"?

Answer: Crystal Man

When you collect all eight letters, you get Beat the bird. Beat is especially useful against Dr. Wily in the end battle. Most of the letters are in plain view, though in Stone Man Stage Capcom got devious and actually hid the letter.
6. In one of the games, Capcom hid an item in one of the stages. To get this item, you jump over the first pit you come to in the stage it is hidden in. The game will continue to scroll to the right, allowing you to get the item. This is the only time in all six games Capcom has hidden an item thus. What is the game?

Answer: Mega Man IV

In "Mega Man IV", on the "Pharaoh Man" stage, you jump over the first pit you get to and you will get the secret item called the Balloon Adapter. Also in "Mega Man IV", a special item called the Wire Adapter is hidden in Dive Man's stage.
7. In "Mega Man VI", before the final confrontation with Dr. Wily, you might fight the eight Robot Masters a second time. The game features a transport room with eight different doors arranged in a U formation, with three doors on the left side of the screen, two doors on the lower portion, and three doors on the right side of the screen. What Robot Master does the uppermost door on the right-hand side of the screen take you to?

Answer: Blizzard Man

In "Mega Man", you fought two Robot Masters in one stage and then four Robot Masters in the last stage of Dr Wily. However, in "Mega Man II", Capcom designed a teleport room with eight doors where you fight the eight Robot Masters a second time. All five sequels to "Mega Man" used this teleport room.
8. In "Mega Man VI", there are secret passages that contain extra goodies in the Mr. X stages. How many of these secret passages exist?

Answer: Two

"Mega Man VI" introduced multiple pathways in the Robot Master stages. Capcom implemented this concept in Mr. X's castle. Sadly, though are only some energy items and these passageways do not drastically effect gameplay.
9. How many times must you hit the alien in "Mega Man II" with the Bubble Lead before you defeat him?

Answer: 14

Bubble Lead, probably the worst item in the game, is the only weapon which the alien hologram is vulnerable to. The alien, like Mega Man, begins the final fight with twenty eight bars of health. Each Bubble Lead takes away two bars of health, so you must hit the alien a grand total of fourteen times. In contrast, the alien only has to hit Mega Man five times to kill him.
10. On the last stage of "Mega Man", you see a strange power-up known as a Yashichi. By getting this power-up, all of your health and weapons are completely restored to full volume. This is the only time this item appears in the six NES "Mega Man" games. However, a lot of old Capcom games features this special item, including a handful of titles that had the item as an actual enemy instead of a power-up. What's the first game by Capcom to feature a Yashichi?

Answer: Vulgus

Capcom first introduced the Yashichi in "Vulgus", the very first game ever published by the company. A top down shooter similar to 1942, in "Vulgus" the Yashichi was actually an enemy. In another early Capcom game, "Exed Exes", it was an enemy. However, overall the Yashichi almost always appears as a power-up. Although only appearing once in the classic NES series, the Yashichi appears in the following Mega Man games: "Mega Man 8", "Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters", "Mega Man: Battle and Chase", "Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge", and "Mega Man ZX Advent".
