Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What NES game famously congratulates a victorious player with the following statement: "A winner is you!"?

Answer: Pro Wrestling

After defeating different characters, the 1986 title "Pro Wrestling" will spring that memorable phase on you. "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl", "Pokemon Gold and Silver", and "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" all reference the phrase. Fawful, the main villain of ""Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" utters the phrase.
2. In the mid 1980s, Nintendo put several of their hit titles in video game arcade machines. The series was named "Vs.", and featured such games as. One of the games had their ending changed. After defeating the Vs. version of the game in question, you get the following poem. I edited out the name as that will give away the answer. "Peace is paved With kingdom saved Hurrah to [name of main character] Our only hero This ends your trip Of a long friendship" What game features such brilliant poetry?

Answer: Vs. Super Mario

"Vs. Super Mario Bros." features levels lifted from the unreleased Japanese "Super Mario Bros. 2". 8-4 was one such level, and even had the ending text from "Super Mario Bros. 2" as well.
3. There have been a lot of fighting games over the years. One game features a challenger who states when before you fight him this truly intimidating statement: "Oooh. You make me so angry, ya big silly." What's the game?

Answer: Fatal Fury Special

"Fatal Fury Special" was an updated version of "Fatal Fury 2" for the Neogeo. Fighter Terry Bogard says the quote in question.
4. Some games' text had to be edited due to the course language of the original. One such example is this revised dialogue: "You spoony bard!" What's the game?

Answer: Final Fantasy II

Originally the dialogue read "b--tard", but they changed the text in the North American release. Why they chose "spoony bard" we'll never know. Although released as "Final Fantasy II" in America, the game was actually "Final Fantasy IV", but "Final Fantasy II" and "III" had not been released state side. "Dragon Quest V" and "Dragon Quest VI", both Super Famicom titles, were also never released in the United States during the 1990s on a 16 bit console.
5. During the opening segment of this particular game, you are sneaking around trying to avoid detection when one of the guards says "I'm getting sleeping!!" Then just a little bit later: "I feel asleep!!" What's the game?

Answer: Metal Gear

"Metal Gear" appeared on the MSX in 1987. In 1988, Konami ported the game to the NES. The port features numerous changes in both the level design and the story of the game itself. Konami created the NES port without involvement of Hideo Kojima, the principal game director for the "Metal Gear" series, and he has expressed disappointment with this port.

In 1990, Konami released "Solid Snake" a sequel.
6. Some arcade titles, in order to sound menacing, throw out statements such as these: ""YOU! INVADERS! GET YOU THE HOT BULLETS OF SHOTGUN TO DIE!"" What's the title?

Answer: Battle Rangers

Data East developed and released the game as "Bloody Wolf" in 1988. The game was ported to the TurboGraphx console in 1990. This is also a Virtual Console title for the Wii, released in 2007. The name was changed to "Battle Rangers" for its European release.
7. You manage to make it through one of the most difficult games in existence, and then you get this message: "This room is an illusion and is a trap devisv7 by Satan. Go ahead Dauntlessly. Make rapid progress!" You beat the title a second time, to get this message: "Contraturation This story is happy end. Thank you." What's the game?

Answer: Ghost and Goblins

"Ghost and Goblins" is one of most notoriously difficult games in the NES catalog. After beating the game, Capcom plays an evil, low down, dirty trick on you and says you may have defeated Satan, but he won and to see the REAL ending you have to beat the game a second time.

Although inconceivable today, Capcom probably designed the game this way to give the player additional motivation to replay the game. Personally, given how hard that game is, I would throw my controller through the TV and swear off the game for all eternity.

It's that hard.
8. Here's another fighting game question. They seem to attack all sorts of funny Engrish phrases. This challenger says "Your fists of evil are about to meet my steel wall of niceness." What is the character's name who utters such ferocious talk?

Answer: Tung Fu Rue

This text is another quote from "Fatal Fury Special" for the Neogeo. He is an elderly martial arts master from China, and is one of the first four opponents you fight in the original "Fatal Fury".
9. At the final confrontation, the main villain of the game confesses to the you, the player, that his "plans for world domination has faild!" What video game features this misspelling of "faild"?

Answer: Mega Man VI

Write it up to bad translation by Nintendo. Capcom published the first five NES "Mega Man" titles, but did not publish "Mega Man VI" in the United States, opting to focus on "Mega Man X" for the Super Nintendo. Nintendo published "Mega Man VI" instead.
10. I'll end the quiz with the perhaps the most famous of all Engrish in video games. What video game has the phrase "All your base are belong to us" in the intro scene?

Answer: Zero Wing

"All your bases are belong to us" became a major Internet phenomenon during 2000-2002. This memorable text appears in "Zero Wing", a port of the 1989 arcade title. Toaplan published the port on the European Sega Mega Drive in 1991.
