Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which game for the Nintendo DS console is available in different versions featuring dogs such as dachshunds, Chihuahuas and Dalmatians in their titles?

Answer: Nintendogs

The various 'Nintendogs' games include 'Dalmatian and Friends', 'Chihuahua and Friends' and 'Dachshund and Friends' amongst others. All the games are basically the same, but give you different dog breeds to start your canine family with. In it you choose and name your dog, bring him or her home with you (or leave them in the 'dog hotel' if you've run out of space), train them, walk them, wash them, attend various competitions with them and dress them up in some slightly silly outfits bought from the local shop. In fact, pretty much everything you can do with a real-life dog...

The incorrect options are all other games available for the Nintendo DS.
2. In which role-playing open world game for the Xbox 360, first released in 2008, does the player guide a character named Sparrow through the fictional world of Albion (while not forgetting the dog who is Sparrow's almost constant companion)?

Answer: Fable II

'Fable II' is a sequel to the original 'Fable', set 500 years in the future in the same world known as Albion. This time around the hero of the game is not left to muddle through life alone, but gets their very own canine companion who can be taught tricks, put to use fighting enemies or sent off to locate treasure. Handily, the dog is pretty much immortal (although you might end up having to heal any injuries) so pet-lovers won't feel too much guilt from sending their dog off into dangerous situations. However, interacting with a pet dog is really not the main aim of 'Fable II' which takes place in a large, detailed world - giving the player the chance to simply marry and have a family, gain wealth and property or actually undertake the missions required for the plot to progress and the game to be completed.

Various characters in the game are voiced by famous British actors including Stephen Fry, Julia Sawalha and Zoë Wanamaker. The incorrect options are other games that feature the voices of famous people.
3. What is the name of the pirate-based point-and-click adventure game for PC and Mac where most of the characters are dogs?

Answer: Jolly Rover

'Jolly Rover' is a 2D point-and-click game where the player takes the role of a Dachshund called Gaius James Rover who finds himself captured by canine pirates and left to negotiate various adventures on tropical islands. Luckily help is at hand from a parrot named Juan Leon - who demands crackers in exchange for information. The game also features a Dalmatian as a retired pirate; Rover's girlfriend, a cocker spaniel named Clara; and various other different types of dogs.

The incorrect options are all made up pirate and dog related titles - "Arrr....me hearties!" is a common pirate phrase, Blackbeard was a famous English pirate and the cat o'nine tails was a nasty whip used for flogging.
4. A 1990s PlayStation game where the player controls a rapping dog has what name?

Answer: PaRappa the Rapper

'PaRappa the Rapper' was originally released for the original PlayStation console in 1996 and features a dog named Parappa and his rap teacher. The player has to hit a sequence of buttons in time with the rap demonstrated by the teacher, which allows Parappa to join in as well. Keeping in time with the lyrics will result in a 'good' rating - but mess up a few lines and you'll be ranked 'awful' or fail the level completely. There's also the chance to demonstrate a few freestyle lines in order to gain 'cool' ranking.

This deceptively simple game was re-released ten years later for the PSP and a sequel also appeared for the PlayStation 2 system. In Japan (where the game was developed) it also went on to inspire a children's television series. The incorrect options are all other games available for PlayStation.
5. In which game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) can the player control either a boy or his dog (which changes between wolf, greyhound, poodle and robot form) as they explore a secret fantasy world?

Answer: Secret of Evermore

'Secret of Evermore' was first released in 1995. The storyline sees a boy and his beloved pet dog caught up in a scientific experiment gone wrong (a mishap that was probably the dog's fault for chewing something that it shouldn't have). As a result they are transported to the fantastic world of Evermore where different portions of the world depict different historical eras. In the pre-historic area the boy's dog becomes a fearsome wolf; in an area resembling Ancient Rome the dog becomes a greyhound; in a fantasy area with castles and dragons the dog takes the form of a poodle; and in a world set on a space station the dog ends up as a robot. Oddly enough it is only the dog who is affected - the boy remains a boy throughout the game.

The incorrect options all appeared as SNES games at some point during the 1990s.
6. Which animated Disney film about a small dog who is led to believe that he has superpowers inspired a video game of the same name?

Answer: Bolt

'Bolt' (the video game) was first released in November 2008 to coincide with the release of 'Bolt' (the Disney film) and can be found for both a wide variety of consoles (Nintendo DS, Wii, PlayStation (2 and 3) and Xbox 360) and PC. Both the film and video game are named after the main character - a small white dog named Bolt, who stars in a TV series with his owner Penny. The plot of the fictional show is based around the premise that Bolt possesses a range of superpowers including a "superbark". However, while the film shows Bolt's real-life adventures and eventual discovery of the fact that he is just a normal dog, the video game focuses on Bolt's fictional adventures on his and Penny's TV show.

The incorrect options are all other animated Disney films which have inspired various video games.
7. Which 1980s shooting game features a dog that laughs at the player when they fail to hit the target?

Answer: Duck Hunt

The idea of hunting and shooting poor defenceless ducks sadly made the crossover from reality to the world of video games as early as 1984. It was first released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, with players using the NES Zapper accessory to shoot the ducks, and then thankfully disappeared from consoles for many years before it was resurrected as a download for the Wii U Virtual Console in 2014.

In the original version, if a player fails to hit any of the ducks on their screen (something any duck fan would celebrate), their dog - whose usual job is to retrieve the shot ducks - will instead sit and laugh. The dog is officially unnamed but sometimes referred to as the 'Duck Hunt Dog' or the 'Laughing Dog'.

The incorrect options are all other shooting based NES games that utilised the NES Zapper.
8. In which game for Wii and PlayStation 2 does a dog set off on an adventure to sniff out a mysterious flower that is needed to create a cure for the dog's sick sibling?

Answer: The Dog Island

'The Dog Island' is a role-playing game, with the role in question being a canine character whose name, breed and gender is chosen by the player at the beginning of the game. In order to find a cure for his or her sibling, the dog jumps on a ship and travels to Dog Island in search of Dr Potan who claims to be able to make the necessary medicine. However, the doctor needs a special ingredient - the Legendary Flower - that only the player's dog is capable of sniffing out...

The incorrect options are other games for either the Wii or PlayStation 2.
9. Which PlayStation game, first released in 1998, is set in the Kingdom of Prairie - a series of island worlds inhabited by anthropomorphic cats and dogs?

Answer: Tail Concerto

'Tail Concerto' is not about a group of dogs and cats starting an orchestra, but features a police dog named Waffle Ryebread in his attempts to defeat the Black Cat Gang led by his puppyhood friend, a cat named Alicia. However, it turns out that the cats have been tricked into resurrecting an evil robot and Waffle and Alicia eventually join forces to defeat the menace. In addition to helping Waffle to defeat the cats and the robot, the player also has a chance to explore the world of the Kingdom of the Prairie and locate helpful items such as whistles that grant extra lives.

The incorrect options are all cat related computer, video or arcade games.
10. What survival horror game for PlayStation 2 features a character named Fiona Belli and her dog, a White Shepherd named Hewie, attempting to evade, defeat and escape the evil inhabitants of Belli Castle?

Answer: Haunting Ground

'Haunting Ground' was first published by Japanese video game developers Capcom in 2005. The horror element of the game comes from the premise that Fiona, the game's heroine, is being constantly chased by a range of evil characters and that her best defence against them is simply the ability to run and hide. She is accompanied by her canine companion Hewie the White Shepherd, who she needs to interact with and care for in order to maintain his invaluable friendship - he is able to help defend her during those moments when it all becomes too much and panic mode sets in.

The incorrect options are all other games in the survival horror genre that were published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2.
