Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original title of this game was "Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign", and the game initially focused on the "Dark Reign" storyline of the Marvel Universe, in which a character primarily known as a Spider-Man villain takes over S.H.I.E.L.D. and changes it to H.A.M.M.E.R. Who is this character?

Answer: Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin

"Dark Reign" occurred in 2009. After playing a role in defeating the Skrulls during the "Secret Invasion" storyline, Norman Osborn takes over S.H.I.E.L.D. and replaces the Avengers with villains. In the game, some of these disguised villains remain, such as Bullseye dressed like Hawkeye and Moonstone dressed like Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel.

S.H.I.E.L.D. as an acronym has had multiple meanings. Originally "Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division", it was changed to "Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate" in 1991. For the films and television universe, it is "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division".

The meaning behind H.A.M.M.E.R. has not been revealed. In fact, in "Dark Avengers" #1 (2009), it is suggested that Osborn chose the name without figuring out what it stands for. In "Captain America: Reborn" (2009), a H.A.M.M.E.R. agent states that the meaning is classified.
2. One of the most dramatic evolutions of the game happened when Environment tiles were replaced by these, which allow players to use their boosts or characters that might not be on their roster. What are these tiles called?

Answer: Team-Up

Environment abilities depended on the "location" of the battle you were fighting: City, Forest, High-Tech, Latveria, Winter, or Desert. They were removed from the game in patch R58 (July 2014).

Making Team-Up matches allows the player to activate one of the three boost or Team-Up tokens selected at the beginning of the match. Players can even lend some of their characters to other players in their Alliance to function as Team-Ups.
3. One of the least popular characters in the game is the Amazing Bag-Man, a costume variant that a character wore after the Fantastic Four removed the alien symbiote he was using for a costume. Which hero ended up wearing a spare Fantastic Four uniform and a paper bag on his head?

Answer: Spider-Man

This embarrassing episode of Spider-Man's career happened in "Amazing Spider-Man" #258 (1984). It should be no surprise that with Peter Parker's luck someone took a picture of him in the outfit.

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 2-star character is the Bag-Man variant of "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" #2 (2006), drawn by Mike Wieringo (1963-2007).
4. One of the most prevalent characters in the game is this "Merc with a Mouth", who has both a daily event and one where he goes up against the entire Marvel Universe (well, most of the ones in the game, anyway). Who is this character?

Answer: Deadpool

Deadpool first appeared in "The New Mutants" #98 (1991). While he has super-human healing ability, he's not quite sane and tends to break the fourth wall. In fact, he knows that "Marvel: Puzzle Quest" is a game and "talks" directly to the player.

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 3-star character was originally the Hastings variant of "Deadpool" #11 (2013), which portrayed Deadpool as a character in a video game. However, due to a rights issue, this cover was changed to the Deadpool variant of "Uncanny Avengers" #1 (2012).
5. For the first anniversary of the game, which Norse "Goddess of Thunder" was added to the game?

Answer: Thor

After the events of the "Original Sin" event in 2014, Thor lost the ability to wield his hammer, Mjolnir. Not worthy to be called "Thor", he took up the name Odinson. A new, female hero wielded Mjolnir and was the new Thor. This character was later revealed to be Jane Foster. This female Thor debuted in "Thor" v4 #1 (2014).

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 4-star character is the Esad Ribic variant of "Thor" vol. 4 #1 (2014).
6. MTV News had the exclusive reveal that this character, the first Muslim superhero to star in her own solo comic book at Marvel, would be joining the game. What is the secret identity of this teenage Ms. Marvel?

Answer: Kamala Khan

Kamala Khan is a Pakistani American teenager in Jersey City, NJ, who gets shapeshifting powers when exposed to a cloud of Terrigen Mists, which activated her dormant Inhuman abilities.

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 3-star character is "Ms. Marvel" (2014) #13.
7. When his Super-Soldier no longer works, Steve Rogers ages into a 90-year old man and asks his friend Sam Wilson to take over as Captain America. Sam Wilson is better known as which high-flying Avenger?

Answer: The Falcon

Sam Wilson becomes the new Captain America in "Captain America" vol. 7 #25 (2014). His first appearance is "Captain America" #117 (1969).

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 4-star character is "All-New Captain America" #1 (2014).
8. After appearing in the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy", this wise-cracking raccoon and his verbally-limited tree friend made their way into "Marvel: Puzzle Quest" as the first pair of characters to share a single roster spot. Who are these cosmic heroes?

Answer: Rocket & Groot

Rocket and Groot are animated characters in the 2014 "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, with Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket and Vin Diesel providing the voice of Groot.

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for this 3-star character duo is "Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy's Most Wanted" #1 (2014).
9. In the "Enemy of the State" mission, Wolverine is captured and brainwashed into working for a group of magic-using ninjas. Who are they?

Answer: The Hand

The Hand were created by Frank Miller and first appeared in "Daredevil" #174 (1981).

The Foot Clan from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was originally created as a parody of the Hand.

The "Enemy of the State" mission is based on a storyline of the same name that appeared in "Wolverine" vol. 3 #20-32 (2005-2006).
10. Silver Surfer was the first 5-star character added to the game, just in time for the second anniversary event: a special battle against the Silver Surfer's former master, a large, planet-eating alien. Who is this hungry cosmic enemy?

Answer: Galactus

Both Galactus and the Silver Surfer first appeared in "Fantastic Four" #48 (1966).

Norrin Radd agreed to become the Silver Surfer in order to spare his planet, Zenn-La, from the hunger of Galactus. He located planets for Galactus to consume before being dismissed.

In "Marvel: Puzzle Quest", the cover for the 5-star Silver Surfer is "Annihilation: Silver Surfer" #4 (2006).
