Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released in 1988, "Castlevania" featured a number of famous literary or mythical monsters as bosses for the stages. Which of these is the fifth boss you must face?

Answer: The Grim Reaper

In order, the bosses in the game are a large vampire bat, Medusa's head, two mummies, Frankenstein and Igor, The Grim Reaper, Dracula, and Dracula Beast. The Reaper is considered by most to be the hardest boss in the game. If a player can reach him with holy water, and possibly an item multiplier, then he actually becomes laughably easy.
2. There are three swords in 1987s, "The Legend of Zelda". How many heart containers (minimum) must Link have in order to obtain the Magical Sword?

Answer: Twelve

It takes only the three heart containers that you start with in order to obtain the Wooden Sword. It takes six total containers to get the White Sword. It takes twelve total hearts to get the Magical Sword. Each sword does twice as much damage as the sword before it.

The earliest you can get the Magical Sword in the first quest is after beating the boss at the end of level 4, and then getting the heart container in the ocean that Link needs the ladder to get. The earliest you can get the sword in the second quest is after beating the boss in level 5.
3. In 1987s "Metroid", which of these is NOT the name of a section of the tunnels of the planet Zebes?

Answer: Crateria

Brinstar is the name of the first area where Samus first appears. Norfair is the area that is between Brinstar and Ridley's Lair. Tourain is the area where Mother Brain and the Metroids are found. Crateria is the surface of Zebes, which we do not see in the original Metroid. Samus lands here in "Super Metroid" for the SNES and "Metroid: Zero Mission" for the GBA.
4. In 1987's "Punch-Out", which boxer listed below does Little Mac have to fight in two different divisions?

Answer: Don Flamenco

King Hippo is ranked #2 on the Major Circuit. Great Tiger is ranked #1 on the Major Circuit. Mr. Sandman is ranked #1 on the World Circuit. Don Flamenco is ranked #3 in the Major Circuit, and #2 on the World Circuit. He is considerably more challenging the second time around.
5. In the 1985 title, "Super Mario Brothers", which level is the ice level?

Answer: 6-3

In the Super Mario All-Stars version for the SNES, this level is not an ice level. I was extremely disappointed. However the added depth to the graphics, particularly the backgrounds, on the game is enough to make up for this omission.
6. In the 1988 title "Mega Man 2", which one of these Robot Masters does Mega Man NOT face?

Answer: Ice Man

Air Man, Wood Man, and Crash Man all appear in "Mega Man 2", while Ice Man was a Robot Master from the original "Mega Man". "Mega Man 2" is a prime example of how the video game world does not follow the same rules as movies. The sequel is usually a better seller than the original.
7. 1986's "Ghosts N' Goblins" is considered one of the hardest games of all time due to the low threshold for taking damage before Sir Arthur is killed. How many hits can Arthur endure?

Answer: Two

When Sir Arthur is hit the first time, he loses his armor. When he is hit the second time he dies. This game is as hard as it is because it was originally an arcade game which was ported to various platforms. We all know that the best way to make money on an arcade game is to make the player die.
8. 1988's title "Contra" famously contains the Konami Code. What should players try to input on their controllers if someone tells them to input the Konami Code?

Answer: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left RIght B A

Video game developer Konami used this code is many of its games. In "Contra" each player started the game with thirty lives in reserve. It has since become a pop culture fixture in the gaming and computer world.
9. In the 1990 game "Final Fantasy", the Light Warriors are tasked with lighting four orbs to save the world. What is the name of the final boss who is causing the time loop?

Answer: Chaos

Tiamat is the boss guarding the light to the Orb of Air. The Ultimate Weapon and the Omega Weapon appear in other "Final Fantasy" titles. Chaos is the final boss of the original "Final Fantasy".
10. What is the name of one of the heroes in 1990's "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse"?

Answer: Trevor Belmont

Simon Belmont was the hero in "Castlevania" and "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Richter Belmont was the hero in "Dracula X", and an unlockable playable character in "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night". Leon Belmont is the hero in "Castlevania: Lament of Innocence". Trevor Belmont shares his role of hero in "Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse" with Grant Danasty, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard.
