Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. So, cadet, you have just entered the world of "Grand Theft Auto Online" and you want to do a parachute race straight away on your own, just to get your feet wet. However, you need to be a certain online rank to unlock these. Who is the character that will telephone you when you reach that online rank?

Answer: Dom

In "Grand Theft Auto Online", parachute races become available to online players when they reach rank 11 onwards. They show up on the map as blue parachute icons after Dom contacts the player on the phone. After this phone call, you can also access parachute races from the phone.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: I would recommend parachute races on your own when you are just starting out as you can also get some rank points (known as RP) and some money. One way I like to do solo races is by pressing the start button on the controller. By doing this you can access the map of Los Santos map from above and you can manoeuvre the crosshair with the left analog stick over any parachute icon.
2. OK, cadet. You are taking part in a parachute race in "Grand Theft Auto Online" with other players and you see blue circles below you that you must hit. What are these blue circles called?

Answer: Checkpoints

The checkpoints in the "Grand Theft Auto Online" parachute races do have a point system attached to them so making sure you hit the checkpoints is vital. You get 5 points for hitting the light outer blue line, 10 points for hitting the darker blue middle line and 15 points for hitting the center which is also a direction arrow pointing towards the next checkpoint.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: When aiming for the center arrow of these checkpoints, use a rough midway point of the center cell guidelines of the parachute to line up the checkpoint arrow. Also, just before you hit the checkpoint arrow, you can turn more sharply using R1 or L1 to get lined up for the next checkpoint.
3. So, cadet, knowing what these blue circles are called in "Grand Theft Auto Online", you go and miss every single one in the parachute race apart from the landing zone which scores you 15 points. The other parachutists went through every blue circle scoring points but they all missed the landing zone. Did you win the race?

Answer: Yes

Yes, you would win the race as failure to land in the LZ results in the other players getting a DNF. This I know as sometimes in my crew we have boosting sessions in which other crew members try to help each with their "Grand Theft Auto Online" goals. One in-game award is to win 25 parachute races and with me already having this I don't mind losing races for my fellow crew members to win as long as they land in the LZ. Yes, I just could jump to my death. However, I still want some RP points for my time. One such boosting race with my crew I only scored 60 points on purpose and the others scored around 200 points but all of them missed the LZ and I won the race. So, even if you are not too good at hitting the checkpoints, always make sure you land in the LZ as you never know.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: The LZ is similar to checkpoints but it is three blue circles. You want to aim for smack bang in the middle of the LZ or hit the middle circle with your player ending in the centre. Just before you land, press both the R1 and L1 button together and this will act as brake allowing you to gently touch down.
4. Feeling cocky are we, cadet? Well, the next LZ is surrounded by trees with only one clear approach in. This LZ is in the "Grand Theft Auto Online" parachute race called "Airwaves" and you end up doing a face plant into the LZ due to clipping a tree. How many points will this type of landing cost you if you survive?

Answer: Five

If you survive a face plant landing into any LZ, you will have 5 points deducted from your score. The "Airwaves" parachute race, in my opinion, has the most difficult LZ to land in; if you end up clipping the palm trees, try and be low so you can survive the landing into the LZ.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: One of the in-game awards in "Grand Theft Auto Online" is called Point Break. To win this you need to stay in the air with a parachute for over 3 minutes, which you have to do 25 times. The easiest way I found to do this was to steal a helicopter and travel to the docks, where Simeon wants his cars to be delivered, and gain maximum altitude. When you are at max altitude, exit the helicopter and let the helicopter pass you, as sometimes the helicopters rotor blades can catch your chute so open your chute as soon as it goes past. Pull back on the left analog stick and aim for Sandy Shores. This method can be time consuming so it may help to wedge the controller somehow while you are doing this. If you can wedge the controller it's a good time to go to the loo or to go and make a cup of coffee or tea, but make sure you can get back in time to nail the landing.
5. That's what I like to see: cadets with a sense of fashion. Not the clothes or that silly hairstyle but the ability to change your parachute and chute bag. What store in "Grand Theft Auto Online" enables players to buy different coloured parachutes and other skydiving apparel?

Answer: Ammu-Nation

When you're inside Ammu-Nation and enter the blue marker, you will see, on the front wall on the top left hand side, a standard chute bag. When you click on this, it will show you what type of options you can buy. In these options, there are different coloured parachutes, coloured smokes and chute bags designs. As part of "The San Andreas Flight School Update" came the ability to buy chute bags that can have a country's flag on them. For instance I'm part of a British crew and I have a Union Jack chute bag when parachuting.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: In "Grand Theft Auto Online", another of the in-game awards involves parachuting and is called Nick of Time, in which you have to open your parachute from a height of below 130 feet and survive. To max out the award, you have to do this 25 times. Before you attempt this, make sure you have banked any money you have earned, as you can die a few times while doing this award. There is a crane in West Vinewood on West Eclipse Blvd, near the most expensive apartment in "Grand Theft Auto Online", and that's where you need to go. Climb to the top of the crane and go near the counterweights. Before you jump, make sure you have your parachute on via the select menu. If you don't have a parachute, sometimes a parachute will spawn down the boom arm of the crane, giving you another go if you mess up or succeed. You can try these types of jumps from many different places and aircraft, but I would recommend the crane method as the descent is short and can be easier to judge. This is not a foolproof method, so be prepared to go splat a few times.
6. So, cadet, while you were at the store, did you buy some parachute smoke? Well, if you did, remembering this is based on the PS3 version of "Grand Theft Auto Online", what button do you press on the controller to see the smoke come out when you are parachuting?

Answer: Cross

If you have purchased parachute smoke from the Ammu-Nation store here is how to use it. Enter the select menu and set the smoke to 'on' when you have bought it. The next time you do a parachute race and you press the X button, a trail of smoke can be seen coming from your character's feet. There are different types of colours but the one I use was part of the "Independence Day Special". This smoke comes out in 3 different colours of red, white and blue.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: Using the smoke in the races can be both good and bad if you are leading the parachute race. The good reason is due to the fact it can distract the players who are new to parachute races and make them miss the checkpoints. The bad reason is that decent players will also follow your trail and sometimes hit you causing you or them to spiral out of control for a short while. Parachute collisions generally can happen just before you hit a checkpoint and can lead to you missing the checkpoint or having to go around again.
7. Hopefully, cadet, you have been paying attention just before you jump. Have you have noted down which type of vehicles are used in the parachute races? With that in mind, which one of these listed are used as the start of the majority of parachute races in "Grand Theft Auto Online"?

Answer: Helicopters

The parachute races in "Grand Theft Auto Online" require a static start point so blimps and planes are not used. The majority of the parachute races start from a helicopter hovering at varied altitudes, depending on the race. Some of the parachute races will have you base-jumping of the side of Mount Chiliad. There was also a race called "Construction Bail" that had you leaping of the top of a building site, but this was removed by Rockstar.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: If you need to bailout of a jet plane, such as the Lazer or Besra, make sure you have some height before doing so. Sometimes, when you eject, you can hit the wings or tail of the aircraft, causing you to spin for a while. If you are too low and spinning, you will hit the ground before your character can self-right. Gain some altitude before you punch out and hopefully you can self-right in time to open your chute.
8. OK, cadet. As of "The San Andreas Flight School Update" in "Grand Theft Auto Online", some of the parachute races have red checkpoints. What do you have to do when you pass through these red check points?

Answer: Jettison your primary chute and open your reserve chute.

As part of "The San Andreas Flight School Update", some of the parachute races had a new twist to them. One the new races called Holding Pattern has a red checkpoint in which you have to jettison your primary chute, free-fall for a bit and then open your reserve chute. To jettison the primary chute you press the triangle button on your controller and then the X button to open your reserve chute.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: With these parachute races that have a red checkpoint, hopefully you will have some good skydiving skills in altering your flight, as a steep dive is required to line up the next checkpoint after you have jettisoned your chute. One thing I have noticed that can help with these type of parachute races is that it helps if you jettison your chute just before you go through the red checkpoint. Doing this can either increase your lead or help you to catch up if it's a close race.
9. Congratulations, cadet. You've passed Zonko's parachute school. With your confidence on a high, you tackle the "Grand Theft Auto Online" Flight School. In the test "Chase the Parachute", does the test end when you've caught the chute bag?

Answer: No

The "Chase the Parachute" test starts with your player on a ramp of a Titan watching the chute bag fall away. As soon as the timer counts down, you need to have your character jump after it. With some precise skydiving manoeuvres, you should catch up to the chute bag. It auto equips on to your character, so once you have the chute bag, you can open up your parachute at any time. You still need to land in the LZ to pass this test.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: To up your flying skill for your online character in "Grand Theft Auto Online", I would recommend doing the flight school as soon as you unlock it. The online flight school is at the same place as the flight school in "Grand Theft Auto V". Most of the online tests are quite challenging but fun to do at the same time, as well as earning your online character RP and money.
10. You have trained well, cadet, and passed Flight School. You have taken part in the Flight School event weekend in "Grand Theft Auto Online". What item with a cannabis leaf pattern could you unlock if you took part in this event?

Answer: The High Flyer chute bag

The High Flyer chute bag was only available to online players who completed the event playlist during the San Andreas Flight School Event Weekend. The chute bag had a cannabis leaf pattern and was free to online players when they had unlocked it and could be found in the Ammu-Nation store.

Zonko's "GTA Online" tip: Parachuting can come in handy when you are trying to nab those pesky special crate drops. Fly to the green drop zone when they appear and then parachute into the drop zone from a low altitude. Kill the guards that are waiting and wait for the crate, though keep watching your radar for other online players who also want it so be prepared for a battle.
