At the start of the game, the player has a choice between Grookey, the grass type, Scorbunny, the fire type and Sobble, the water type. The player receives this gift from Galar Champion Leon who is the older brother of the player's friend and rival Hop. Hop will select the starter that is weak against the one player picked while Leon will keep the other choice for himself.

Answer: Dynamax

Professor Magnolia and her granddaughter Sonia are researching Dynamax, a Pokémon transformation that causes a Pokémon to become giant and dramatically increases its HP. According to Magnolia, not much is known about Dynamaxing or Gigantamaxing, a similar transformation, and she is researching more about it and trying understand why it can only be performed in certain places in Galar. Sonia is more focused on a historical connection between Dynamaxing and two heroes who saved Galar many, many years prior.

Answer: Grass

Milo is a rancher and farmer who is also the Gym Leader in Turffield. He specializes in grass Pokémon and his signature Pokémon is an Eldegoss. Galar's Gym Challenge is structured in such a way that challengers must complete in the gyms in a specific order. Chairman Rose, a businessman who oversees the challenge, explains that the gym leaders battle one another to determine their strength and the challengers must defeat the gym leaders starting with the weakest. Thus Milo is considered to be the weakest of Galar's eight gym leaders.

Despite still being called gym leaders, the battles take place in large stadiums in front of an audience and not in traditional gyms as in past games.

Answer: Mime Jr.

There is only one form of Mime Jr., the one introduced in "Diamond and Pearl". However, Mime Jr.'s evolution Mr. Mime has a new Galarian form (now an psychic/ice type)and can evolve further in Mr. Rime. Zigzagoon and Linoone also have new Galarian forms and become normal/dark type and a new evolution, Obstagoon.

However the regular Linoone cannot evolve into Obstagoon. Similar to Mime Jr., Koffing did not receive a new form but Koffing that originate in Galar will evolved into a Galarian Weezing that is now a poison/fairy type. Galarian Corsola is now ghost type and can further evolve into a Cursola.

Other Pokémon that received new Galarian forms are Farfetch'd, Ponyta, Rapidash, Stunfisk and Yamask.

Answer: Oleana

Chairman Rose is the CEO of the Galar Pokémon League and becomes interested in the player and Hop because they are sponsored by the Champion Leon. Oleana will occasionally summon the player to meet Chairman Rose throughout his or her quest to become champion. Oleana clearly is overprotective of Rose's interests and has a cold disposition toward other people, especially anyone who keeps Rose waiting.

Answer: Bede

Bede is an obnoxious young boy who is sponsored by Chairman Rose. This gives Bede an inflated personality as he thinks he is superior to everyone else, despite frequently losing Pokémon battles. In Stow-on-Side, Bede destroys an ancient mural because he believes there are wishing stars behind it and he wishes to please Chairman Rose who is searching for them.

Instead, Rose is furious that Bede acted so selfishly and is disqualified from the Gym Challenge. Bede still makes frequent appearances in Galar and challenges the player to battles.

Answer: Piers

Piers is a rock star and the leader of Team Yell. Team Yell is Galar's villainous team whose main goal is to cheer on Piers' younger sister Marnie during the Gym Challenge. As a result, they will try to impede the player and other challengers' progress, despite Marnie wishing they wouldn't. Piers is the gym leader in Spikemuth. Piers is something of a traditionalist and refuses to Dynamax one of his Pokémon like the other gym leaders do.

It is mentioned several times that Chairman Rose wishes Piers would relocate to another city because it is not possible to Dynamax in Spikemuth.

Answer: Chairman Rose

Chairman Rose is obsessed with perfection. However, the constant Dynamaxing of Pokémon could create an energy crisis in a thousand years, something Rose hopes to avoid by solving the problem now. However, his solution is to cancel the Pokémon League during the finals and awaken Eternatus, a legendary Pokémon. If Rose gets his way, the energy crisis will be averted but much of Galar and its lifestyle will be destroyed. Rose does not care as he only wishes to preserve his dream.

Answer: Raihan

Raihan is the gym leader of Hammerlocke and specializes in dragon-type Pokémon. He is considered the strongest of all the gym leaders and the only one who can come close to defeating Leon.

Allister is the ghost-type leader in Stow-on-Side but only in "Shield". In "Sword", the Stow-on-Side leader is Bea, who specializes in the fighting type. This is similar to the situation in Circhester where the leader in "Sword" is Gordie, the rock-type specialist, while in "Shield", the leader is his mother Melony who uses ice-type Pokémon.

In both versions, Opal, the fairy-type leader, in Ballonlea will retire. She selects Bede as her successor because she likes his feisty attitude. Bede is reluctant to take on the challenge of being a gym leader of fairy types but eventually grows to accept his role, although his horrible attitude does not change.

Also in both versions, Piers will retire from Spikemuth's gym leader position. He is replaced by his sister Marnie who also uses dark-type Pokémon.

Answer: Sonia's assistant

After the player becomes the Champion, Sonia becomes the new professor after her grandmother retires. She hires a new, nameless assistant. After a series of events, the assistant reveals herself to be a supporter of Sordward and Shielbert and gives them the wishing stars that were housed in the lab.

This allows them to Dynamax Pokémon against their will. Every stadium in Galar is attacked by a Dynamaxed Pokémon except for the one in Spikemuth and the player, Hop, Piers and the local gym leader must defeat them.
