Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2004 game 'Painkiller' challenges the player to escape from which location?

Answer: Purgatory

The game was developed in Warsaw by the Polish company People Can Fly and was originally available only on Microsoft Windows. In 2006, a version was made available for the Xbox.

The story revolves around a young man who, along with his wife, is killed in a car accident. While she reaches heaven, he is stuck in purgatory until given an escape route - this involves killing Lucifer's generals to prevent a war between heaven and hell. Game play takes place in various periods of history before ending in hell for a final confrontation. The game is classed as a first person shooter.
2. The Norse god Odin appears regularly in which of these video game series?

Answer: Final Fantasy

The first game in the 'Final Fantasy' series came out in 1987 and was created by the Japanese company Square, which later changed its name to Square Enix. The series involves role playing games with elements of fantasy.

Odin made his first appearance in 'Final Fantasy III' in 1990 and has been a character in nearly every subsequent edition. As a character, he has to be found during the game, so his abilities have to be earned during game play. Odin appears as a knight, often riding his mythical horse Sleipnir, and can kill enemies instantly.
3. With a setting of the Holy Land and the Third Crusade, which game, the first in a series, came out in 2007?

Answer: Assassin's Creed

The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the Canadian subsidiary of a French company. 'Assassin's Creed' involves a present day man who is transported via a machine called the 'Animus' into a virtual reality based on his hidden memories of one of his own ancestors. He finds himself in the middle of the Third Crusade in 1191 with game play taking place in the real locations of Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. The modern character has to assassinate various characters of the period, a task at which his ancestor failed.

The game was originally available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and numerous sequels, set in different time periods and locations, have appeared over the years.
4. The video game 'Diablo IV' is set in which of these fictional worlds?

Answer: Sanctuary

The first game in what became a long-running series came out in 1997. The game is set in a world named Sanctuary and, in the original game, involves being one of three possible characters - Warrior, Rogue or Sorcerer. Monk was added later and other, hidden, characters can be found. Later versions include even more characters. The play begins in the mortal world, with the High Heavens, realm of the angels, and Burning Hells, where the demons, including Diablo himself, reside being other locations The name 'Diablo' means 'devil' in Spanish.

The game was created by Blizzard North for Blizzard Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation and Mac OS. Hyrule is the setting for 'The Legend of Zelda' games, Thedas belongs to 'Dragon Age' and Nirn is where the Elder Scrolls' games are set.
5. Druids represent one of the older religions in the Celtic world. In which of these video games are you most likely to come across them?

Answer: World of Warcraft

Dating from 2004, although with several expansions since, 'World of Warcraft' is one of the best known and most widely played online games. Players can play as individuals or collaborate with others to explore and complete tasks. Druids are powerful characters in the game, so attuned to nature that they can shapeshift into different animals - a bird, for example, can give an overall view of the landscape, while a bear can attack an enemy.

The game was developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The other games listed have no connection to druids nor to any other religious or mythical figures.
6. Which character from Norse myth, with his appearance based on that of actor Tom Hiddleston, was introduced to 'Fortnite' in 2021?

Answer: Loki

'Fortnite' dates from 2017 and became popular very quickly with the 'Battle Royale' version being particularly successful (and profitable). In this version as many as a hundred players can fight against each other, singly or in combination with other players. Other game options are 'Fortnite: Save the World' and 'Fortnite Creative'. As part of the game(s), players can choose outfits to change their appearance, which is where Loki comes in - a player can opt to dress like the character as portrayed by Tom Hiddleston in the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe'.

'Fortnite' was developed and published by Epic Games, an American company, and is widely available on various gaming systems and as a download.
7. The video game 'Messiah', published in 2000, featured a putto with the unlikely name of Bob. Which of these best describes a putto?

Answer: Cherub

The game, as the name implies, does have a strong religious theme. Bob is sent to Earth by God to cleanse the world of the sin and corruption into which it has fallen. These are personified by Father Prime, a dictator, who sets his forces against Bob, and Satan, who has been unleashed by the dictator's experiments. Unlike the Biblical Messiah, even when Bob succeeds in defeating both Father Prime and Satan, he is left abandoned by God.

The title and game content caused some controversy, because of its Biblical parallel, and was not a huge success. It was created by Shiny Entertainment, which has since been sold on several times, and distributed by Interplay Entertainment, creators of 'Fallout'. 'Messiah' was available on Microsoft Windows.
8. Who is the final boss in the 2010 video game 'Dante's Inferno'?

Answer: Lucifer

The game of 'Dante's Inferno' uses the epic poem written by Dante Alighieri for inspiration, complete with its nine circles of hell. As players are descending towards this abyss, it's Lucifer, or the devil, who awaits at the end. In another religious reference, the character is depicted as a Knight Templar from the time of The Crusades.

The game was created by Visceral Games and distributed by Electronic Arts for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Although the idea of a sequel has been floated at times, nothing has appeared in the first ten years since the original was published.
9. Created specifically as a Christian video game, what is the final word in the title 'Airship Genesis: Pathway to ___'?

Answer: Jesus

This game is a downloadable app available from Google and is aimed primarily at younger children. The premise is that an airship has crash landed with the six occupants separated. During the game, players explore individual pathways, collecting artefacts and solving puzzles. At the same time, they are learning about events from the life of Jesus as told in the Bible.

The game was created and published by Turning Point to God, Inc. with the express purpose of teaching children Bible stories in the interactive way which they are used to. The reference to 'Christian' in the question should have steered you away from Solomon and Moses, who are Old Testament characters.
10. 'Dragon Force' features a god named Madruk based on the god Marduk from which religion?

Answer: Babylonian

Marduk was the patron of Babylon, in the region of Mesopotamia, between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates. He is mentioned in the Bible (Jeremiah) as one of the false gods. In 'Dragon Force' the name is adapted to Madruk, an evil god who has been imprisoned for three hundred years in the land of Legendra. The game involves finally defeating and killing Madruk.

Created by Sega in 1996, versions of the game were available on Sega Saturn and PlayStation 2.
