Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game title also appeared as a track on Pearl Jam's "Ten". It is a first person shooter, featuring the character of Sergeant First Class Jack Kellar, who takes on a number of missions, in the search for the leader of a terrorist group. What is the title?

Answer: Black

Somewhat light on plot Black was praised for its cinema-like styling and the sound for the game involved an interesting approach which involved assigning each individual weapon a unique 'voice' rather than assigning a sound to models of weapons. Gun battles were then 'harmonised' rather than simply being a cacophony of sound.
Pearl Jam's "Black" appeared on "Ten", their debut album. The deeply personal subject matter of the song led to the band refusing to release it as a single. Despite the fact that it was never commercially released, the song reached number three in the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart.
"Oceans" is another song track from the same album and "Halo" is part of a first person shooter series released for Xbox and its successors.
2. Gary Numan may be psychic! He sang about which racing game, based on a movie by Disney/Pixar, long before its release?

Answer: Cars

"Cars" the video game is generally considered to be set after the events of the movie on which it is based. The game involves competing in a number of races to win the Piston Cup - the tiebreaker of which featured heavily in the movie.
"Cars" by Gary Numan was released in 1979 and reached number one in the UK. It is considered to be a classic of the new wave genre - a genre of music which developed in the late 1970s and combined electronic, experimental and punk music.
"Jump In" and "Right on Track" are both Disney movies.
3. Ian Brown spelled out the title of which first person shooter, where the player encounters all sorts of paranormal threats, while aiming to eliminate the villain of the piece, Paxton Fettel?

Answer: F.E.A.R.

"F.E.A.R", standing for "First Encounter Assault Recon" is a first person shooter available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows. The game is heavily influenced by cinema, deliberately using similar techniques to Japanese horror to create sound and atmosphere and featuring 'reflex time' similar to "The Matrix" (1999) where players can react in normal time while everything around them slows down.
Ian Brown's "F.E.A.R" was a single from his 2001 "Music of the Spheres" album. The lyrics in each verse of the song are an acrostic of the title.
4. Which car racing game's title, featuring racing tracks such as "Harbour Town" and "Gridlock USA", got tangled up with a tune from Green Day's "Dookie"?

Answer: Burnout

"Burnout", a car racing game for PlayStation, GameCube, and Xbox, is a straightforward racing game where players compete in a number of events, each of which feature three or four races. At the end of each event a 'Face Off' offers a player the chance to unlock new car.

The tracks in the game are based on real world locations and the graphics are configured to reflect this -'Gridlock, USA' is based on New York and the traffic features New York style taxi cabs. "Burnout" is the opening track on Green Day's "Dookie" which also featured "Longview" as a single.

This was the band's third studio album and the album which led them to worldwide success. "Hard Drivin'" and "Out Run" are both arcade racing games.
5. The Beach Boys would probably have enjoyed this surfing game, the setting for which is the "Reggie Belafonte Big Z Memorial Surf Off" and features such characters as Cody Maverick and Lani Aliikai. Which tangled up title is this?

Answer: Surf's Up

Both "Surf's Up" and "Surfin' USA" are Beach Boys singles and both are title tracks of the albums they feature on.
In "Surf's Up" players take on the roles of characters from the movie, such as Cody Maverick, a penguin, competing at a surfing competition. The movie is generally considered to be a parody of a number of surfing documentaries, but the game play is based closely on skateboarding games.
"Transworld Surf" is a surfing game for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube.
6. Jackie Estecado is the protagonist of the next tangled title. A first person shooter, based on a comic book of the same name, which game title is also the name of an English band, headed up by Justin Hawkins?

Answer: The Darkness

"The Darkness" of the video game title, is the name given to the dark presence which possesses Jackie Estecado. The origins of the character lie in the comic book but in the game, the player, as Jackie, must battle against a corrupt police officer and a Mafia Don who wants him dead.
Justin Hawkins formed The Darkness along with his brother and two others in 2000. They won a number of awards in 2004, including the Ivor Novello award for songwriting.
7. Surely classical music is safe from title tangles. Well...sort of! Which Polish composer "creates" the dream world for the role playing game, "Eternal Sonata"?

Answer: Chopin

In "Eternal Sonata" the game world is based on a dream that Chopin is having as he lies on his death bed. An unusual concept, the player can travel through this world where they may encounter monsters to battle. Chopin himself is a character in the game and players can take on this role among others named after music related terms such as 'Crescendo', 'Polka' and 'Viola'.
8. Racing around on an ATV, performing tricks for speed and point boosts, doing freestyle events, sprints and standard races - I doubt the Lightning Seeds were singing about the action in which title tangled game?

Answer: Pure

"Pure" allows the player to build their quad bike and then race in a variety of events. The key to the game is the tricks that players do for boosts of speed and an increase in their score. The game developers have stated that up to sixty thousand different types of quad bikes can be built when all of the components are made available to a player.
The Lightning Seeds song "Pure" was a single from their debut album "Cloudcuckooland" which was released in 1989.
9. Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" has lent its name to a third person shooter based in Hong Kong, but this isn't where the title tangle ends. The song itself features in two other video games. Which two?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories & Guitar Hero World Tour

The song "Stranglehold" was a single from Ted Nugent's self titled debut solo album. The song is a playable track on "Guitar Hero World Tour", although due to the fact that it is also possible to sing vocals in this version of "Guitar Hero", the lyrics were slightly edited to remove profanity.
It features on "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories" as a song selection on the 'V Rock' radio station within the game.
10. Our last title is well and truly tangled up. From comic book to movie, to video game and with a song from Scottish band Simple Minds thrown in too, this is one popular title! In the game, the player takes on the part of a daredevil motorcyclist, Johnny Blaze, who is trying to rescue Roxanne Simpson while preventing the resurrection of a demon named Blackheart. Which game title is also the alter-ego of the main character?

Answer: Ghost Rider

"Ghost Rider" is the alter-ego of Johnny Blaze who, in trying to save the life of his adopted father, made a bargain with the devil (Mephisto) and as a consequence, had his soul bound to a demon. He now transforms into "Ghost Rider" in the presence of evil, sending such evil to hell and is also forced to carry out the work of the 'Mephisto' the demon with whom he originally made the bargain. "Ghost Rider" featured on Simple Minds' "Real Life" album which was released in 1991. Simple Minds are perhaps best known for their track "Don't You (Forget About Me)", which featured on the soundtrack to "The Breakfast Club" (1985).
