Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the widely popular sports game that was released by Atari in 1972?

Answer: "PONG"

"PONG" was modeled after the game of table tennis, also known as ping pong. The arcade console became popular immediately, prompting Atari to develop a home version that could be hooked to a television set.

The game has been credited with launching the video game industry.
2. One of the most popular games of all time involves maneuvering through a maze while avoiding contact with four ghosts. What is the name of this 1980 Namco creation?

Answer: "Pac-Man"

The object of "Pac-Man" (and its popular successor "Ms. Pac-Man") is to gobble all of the dots before being captured and "killed" by one of the four ghosts moving throughout the maze. Special "vitamins" allow the player to touch and temporarily disable the ghosts.

Coin-operated machines appeared in arcades, convenience stores and family entertainment establishments shortly after the game's release, and it rapidly became a favorite past time for people of all ages. "Pac-Man" has enjoyed several revivals, including PC and mobile versions.
3. The character who later became known as Mario made his first appearance in 1981 in what Nintendo game?

Answer: "Donkey Kong"

Originally called "Jumpman", Mario was a carpenter whose mission was to rescue his girlfriend from Donkey Kong. His profession was changed to plumber when the popular "Mario Brothers" series was released two years later.

"Donkey Kong" has had several sequel games and a television show, as well as a documentary that was released in 2007.
4. The European and North American versions of the 1989 Nintendo Game Boy included a puzzle game that had been created in the USSR five years earlier. What is the name of this game?

Answer: "Tetris"

The object of "Tetris" is to move falling tiles of different shapes into solid lines. Points are given for completed lines, with bonuses for multiple completions. Four lines together is called "Tetris", and gives maximum points.

Russian engineer Alexey Pajitnov developed this tile matching game while working at a research and development center. Because the center was government owned, Pajitnov initially received little proceeds from his immensely popular creation; in fact, it wasn't until 1996 when the rights reverted to him that he was able to form The Tetris Company and begin to realize the fruits of his labor.
5. Thirteen years after the 1996 release of "Harvest Moon", the game lent its concept to what extremely popular Zynga creation?

Answer: "FarmVille"

The "Harvest Moon" series involves the rebuilding of a virtual run-down farm. When Zynga released "FarmVille" in 2009, the social network game became an instant hit, with millions of players signing on to plant crops, raise livestock, and help "neighbors" with chores.

The craze became so widespread that talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw addressed the problem of computer addiction in 2010 and berated a housewife for neglecting her family in favor of the game.
6. In "Super Mario Brothers 3", the "Super Leaf" power-up temporarily gives Mario the appearance of what animal?

Answer: Raccoon

"Raccoon Mario" has the ability to fly, allowing him to cross dangerous areas in his quest to save Princess Peach. Other power-ups include a frog suit, which enables Mario to swim, and a tanooki (raccoon dog) suit which allows him to temporarily turn to stone.

The series was a huge success and has spawned several sequels and similar games.
7. In the game of the same name, what is the mission of the large nosed orange character called "Q-bert"?

Answer: To jump on each square of a pyramid

Q-bert must avoid snakes, gremlins, and other enemies while bouncing between the pyramid's squares.

The game made its debut in 1982 and has been remade a number of times for different systems. The character has also been featured on home decor items for children and on numerous toys.
8. A popular 2009 creation by PopCap games involves protecting a home from a zombie attack by using what defensive items?

Answer: Plants

Players use a wide variety of different types of plants to defend the home against the approaching zombies, and seeds are selected based on factors such as time of day and the type of zombies present in each level.

"Plants vs Zombies" was originally developed for PC use, but following its positive reception, versions have been created for other media systems. A sequel for mobile devices was released in 2013.
9. The year 2011 saw the rise of a group of slingshot riding, pig destroying characters known by what name?

Answer: "Angry Birds"

The player attempts to destroy the pigs by launching the birds into the structures around the pigs, causing the structures to fall. Different colored birds have special abilities and appear as the game progresses.

Initially released as a game for mobile products, the "Angry Birds" phenomenon has been marketed in forms from PC downloads, clothing and advertising media, and has even been referenced in religious and spiritual writings.
10. During the action mode of the classic puzzle game "Bejeweled 2", creating a line of five jewels of the same color creates a power-up called a hyper cube, which is used to do what?

Answer: Destroy all gems of a single color

Swapping the jewels to form a line of three or more causes those jewels to disappear and allows the same number of new gems to fall into the board. Swapping the hyper cube with an adjacent piece will destroy all the gems of that color. The level is completed when the time bar reaches the far right of the screen before the player is out of possible moves.

The first "Bejeweled" game was created in 2001 for PC download, and its popularity has led to several sequels, as well as Android and mobile versions.
