Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Dragon Age II", the story of Hawke (the player character) was being relayed to the Seeker after the events of the game happened. Which of Hawke's companions was retelling the tale of the Champion of Kirkwall?

Answer: Varric, the dwarf

"Dragon Age II" started with a cinematic of Varric being dragged to an interrogation room by the Seekers. He was sat down and ordered to tell the story of the Champion of Kirkwall. He started by telling an embellished version of Hawke's combat prowess (which served as the combat tutorial).

When the Seeker ordered him to be more realistic, Varric settled down to tell the much longer "real" story.
2. Hawke's story started with the family fleeing the town of Lothering in Ferelden. In "Dragon Age: Origins", Lothering was the first town to fall to the Darkspawn during the Blight. Which companion did Hawke meet while still in Ferelden?

Answer: Aveline, the soldier

Hawke started "Dragon Age II" fleeing from the Darkspawn. On their way out of Lothering, they came across Aveline Vallen and her husband, Wesley. Aveline was one of the soldiers betrayed at Ostagar (from "Dragon Age: Origins"), and Wesley was a Templar. Wesley was instantly concerned about the Hawkes harboring mages (Bethany and possibly a mage Hawke), but elected to set aside those fears and work together against the Darkspawn. Wesley did not survive the journey, and Aveline made her way to Kirkwall with the Hawke family.

All other companions were met after the Hawkes had moved to Kirkwall. Some companions appeared in "Dragon Age: Origins". Merrill was seen in the Dalish Elf Origin, and Isabela could be found in the brothel in Denerim.
3. The opening of "Dragon Age II" took place in Ferelden, where the Hawke family was fleeing the blight. Hawke (the player character) had two siblings, but only one managed to escape Ferelden. What determined which sibling lived and which died?

Answer: Hawke's class

Hawke had two siblings, Bethany and Carver. Bethany was Hawke's mage sister, and Carver was Hawke's warrior brother. The surviving sibling would complement Hawke's class. If Hawke was a mage, Carver would survive to add conventional combat elements to the party. If Hawke was not a mage (a Warrior or Rogue instead), Bethany would survive, and provide magical support in battle.
4. The Hawke family was having a little trouble escaping the Darkspawn horde in Ferelden. Which powerful character came to their aide?

Answer: Flemith, the witch of the wilds

The Hawkes were ambushed by a large horde of Darkwpawn that killed Hawke's sibling. The remaining Hawkes and Aveline held off multiple waves of Darkspawn, including an Ogre, but were unable to escape. They were about to be overrun when a high dragon appeared and scared away or burned the remaining Darkspawn.

The dragon turned into Flemeth, the witch of the Kocarri Wilds and mother of Morrigan from "Dragon Age: Origins". She was ready to leave the Hawkes to their fate, but then struck a deal to get them safely to the ocean.
5. In exchange for escaping Ferelden and the blight, what did Hawke promise to do?

Answer: Deliver an amulet to Sundermount

Flemeth asked Hawke to carry an amulet to the summit of Sundermount, near the city of Kirkwall. Flemeth was able to fragment herself, so regardless of what happened in "Dragon Age: Origins", she still lived. She imbued a shard of herself in the amulet, and used Hawke to escape Ferelden.

When Hawke brought the amulet to Sundermount, she was released. After a quick explanation, she transformed into a high dragon, and flew away, never seen again in "Dragon Age II".
6. The Hawkes decided to move to Kirkwall because they still had family there. Which family member was still alive in Kirkwall?

Answer: Gamlin, Hawke's uncle

Hawke's mother, Leandra, left Kirkwall when her family was still wealthy and influential. When Gamlen inherited the Amell estate and fortune, he spent it on prostitutes and gambling. By the time Hawke arrived in Kirkwall, Gamlen was living in a hovel in Lowtown. This was quite a shock to the Hawkes, but Gamlen still let them stay with him when they arrived.

Aristide and Malcom were both dead by the time "Dragon Age II" took place. Charade was Gamlin's daughter, whom he did not know about. They could be united in an optional side-quest.
7. When the Hawkes arrived in Kirkwall, the port was already stuffed full of fleeing refugees. How did the Hawke family get out of the gallows and into the city?

Answer: By working for smugglers or mercenaries

Gamlen did not have the influence or money to bribe the Hawkes into Kirkwall. However, he did have contacts with both a group of mercenaries and a smuggling operation. If the two younger Hawkes agreed to help either group for one year, they would cover the bribe.
8. After a year in Kirkwall, the Hawke family was still living in poverty. Which companion approached Hawke with the offer of a lucrative expedition into the Deep Roads?

Answer: Varric, the dwarf

After just being released from their one-year contract with the smugglers or mercenaries, the Hawkes were out of work, and looking for money. Varric saw potential in the Hawkes, and told them about a big expedition into the Deep Roads that his brother was planning.

It was promising to be very lucrative, provided Hawke could pay the fees to get into the expedition in the first place. The body of the first act of "Dragon Age II" was generating the fifty gold required to buy into the expedition.
9. The plan for the expedition into the Deep Roads was to explore a long forgotten cave, and retrieve old valuable items. Not all went as planned, though. Hawke and company found a strange idol that changed everything. What was the idol made of?

Answer: Red lyrium

Red lyrium was a rare, and even more potent form of lyrium ore. The red lyrium would play a key role in later events at Kirkwall.

Ironbark was a bark as strong as steel, used by Dalish smiths and crafters. Drake scales were also known for being durable, and were used to create armours. Sela Petrae was a crafting substance that Anders needed for his personal concoctions.
10. The strange idol had some malicious properties, including the ability to influence the weak-minded. Who betrayed Hawke to get the idol?

Answer: Bartrand, Varric's brother

When Hawke and Varric discovered it, they knew they had hit on something incredibly valuable. When they gave the idol to Bartrand for inspection, he closed and locked the door to the chamber, sealing Hawke in the Deep Roads.

Prolonged exposure to lyrium could affect peoples' minds. Dwarves, from living near lyrium for so many generations, developed an immunity to it, and by extension, magic and dreaming. It really does show how potent the red lyrium idol was when it corrupted Bartrand, a dwarf, so easily. Or perhaps Bartrand just wanted for himself all the wealth the idol would bring.
