'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' is set in the land of Hyrule where the evil Ganondorf is trying to acquire the Triforce, the ultimate source of power, and wants the magical Ocarina of Time to help him do this. While fleeing from Ganondorf to protect the Triforce, Princess Zelda is able to let the hero Link obtain the Ocarina. Link gradually learns twelve melodies for the Ocarina which help him to progress in his quest to stop Ganondorf. Later Ganondorf eventually manages to capture Princess Zelda but Link rescues her and defeats him.

This game is the fifth in the main 'The Legend of Zelda' series of video games to be released and was developed by Nintendo and issued for the Nintendo 64. After its first release in 1998, the game was re-released in 2003 as part of 'The Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition', a four-game compilation for the Nintendo GameCube and, in China, the iQue Player. In 2011 an enhanced version was issued for the Nintendo 3DS.

The tenth in the 'Legend of Zelda' main series of games to be released was 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker', which was released by Nintendo for their GameCube in Japan in December 2002 and then in other countries during the first few months of 2003. Its creators used cel shading to produce a cartoon-like game, in contrast to the more realistic graphics used in previous games of the series. A 3D version was later produced for the Nintendo Wii U in 2013.

In this game Links lives on an island set in a Great Sea, across which Link sails from one island to another in a talking boat named King of Red Lions. Early on in the game Link acquires the Wind Waker, a conductor's baton which he can use to control the wind. He has a number of adventures as he explores the islands and fights enemies and he is helped by Tetra, an incarnation of Princess Zelda.

'The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures' was the eleventh game in the main 'The Legend of Zelda' video game series to be released. In this game a Shadow Link, who has been created by the evil Ganondorf, kidnaps Princess Zelda and her shrine maidens. To help save them Link takes the Four Sword and so creates three copies of himself and the Sword but releases the imprisoned evil sorcerer Vaati. The four Links eventually manage to free first the maidens then Princess Zelda, who helps them to defeat Vaati, and then they vanquish Ganondorf.

This game is for up to four players and was released for the Nintendo GameCube and for a Game Boy Advance console connected to the GameCube in some countries in 2004 and in others in 2005. The main game as described above is called 'Hyrulean Adventure' and is an elaborate re-working of part of the earlier 'The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords' (Nintendo Game Boy Advance, 2002). Included with 'Hyrulean Adventure' is a subsidiary multi-player game, 'Shadow Battle', wherein players fight each other. The Japanese and Korean versions also contain another game with a different setting.

The twelfth game in 'The Legend of Zelda' main series to appear was 'The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap', which was developed under the supervision of Nintendo by Flagship and Capcom. It was issued as a single-player game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance in Japan and Europe in late 2004 and in North America and Australia in early 2005. Two later versions were released via Nintendo's Virtual Console facility - one for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 and one for the Nintendo Wii U in 2014.

In this game the hero Link is trying to defeat the villain Vaati, who has allowed evil creatures to enter Hyrule and has turned Princess Zelda into stone. Link acquires a talking Minish Cap named Ezlo, who was one of a race of small beings named the Minish or Picori but has been transformed into a Cap. Ezlo assists Link to temporarily shrink to Minish size, so enabling him to move around some areas of the game more easily. After Link has defeated Vaati, he is able to save Zelda while Ezlo transforms back into a Minish.

'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' was the thirteenth game in 'The Legend of Zelda' main series to be released. In this game the land of Hyrule is being taken over by a Twilight Realm from a parallel universe. Link is pulled into this Realm and changed into a wolf and imprisoned but is freed by Midna, a princess and the usurped true ruler of the Realm. Link and Midna move between worlds as they and Princess Zelda fight to free Hyrule, defeat their opponents and restore Midna to her rightful position.

This game was developed by Nintendo and released for two platforms virtually simultaneously with versions for the Nintendo Wii being issued in various countries from 19th November 2006 onwards and for the Nintendo GameCube from 2nd December 2006 onwards. Some years later in 2016 a high definition version of the game, developed by Tantalus Media, was released for Nintendo's Wii U.

The fourteenth game in the main 'The Legend of Zelda' video game series to appear was 'The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass'. It was developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS and supports single-player and multi-player modes. The game was released first in Japan in June 2007 and then in other countries over a period of several months. From November 2015 onwards, a version of the game for the Nintendo Wii U was released via the Virtual Console service in several countries.

This game is a sequel to the earlier 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker' and is set on the Great Sea. Link and the pirate captain Tetra, an incarnation of Princess Zelda from the world of Hyrule, sail in search of, and find, a Ghost Ship but Tetra disappears. Link obtains the Phantom Hourglass, which helps him to find spirits who in turn aid him in locating the Ghost Ship in which Tetra is imprisoned. After some adventures, Link manages to free her and to defeat the main villain, Bellum.

'The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks' was the fifteenth game in 'The Legend of Zelda' main series to be produced. The game is set in the land of New Hyrule, to where some survivors of floods in Hyrule have moved. Although she is kidnapped, as in earlier games, Princess Zelda plays a more active role in this one. Link is a railway engineer and drives a train along disappearing Spirit Tracks to restore them and the Tower of Spirits and, with Princess Zelda's help, eventually overcomes the Demon King Malladus.

This game was created by part of the team working for Nintendo EAD while the other part of the team developed a different game in the series. It was designed for the Nintendo DS and first released in North America on 7th December 2009 then in other countries later the same month. Some years later in November 2015 an updated version was released for the Nintendo Wii U.

The video game 'The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword' was the sixteenth game in the main 'The Legend of Zelda' series to be released. It was developed by half of the Nintendo EAD creative team while the other half were working on another game. The game was created for the Nintendo Wii and was issued in a number of countries between 18th and 24th November 2011. Some years later in 2021 a high-definition version, developed by Nintendo and Tantalus Media, was released for the Nintendo Switch.

This game starts in Link's home of Skyloft, one of several floating islands above Hyrule, which Link flies between on a Loftwing bird. He has just qualified as a knight when his childhood friend Zelda is taken down to the Surface by a black tornado. During the game Link's sword is changed into the White Goddess Sword and he travels between Skyloft and the Surface until he eventually manages to find and save Zelda and to defeat his evil opponents.

The eighteenth video game to be released in 'The Legend of Zelda' main series was entitled 'The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes'. This game is set in the country of Hytopia, where people are obsessed with fashion and where the Princess Styla is cursed by a witch to wear a drab jumpsuit. Link and two other Links travel to the Drablands and work together to solve puzzles and vanquish foes until they can lift the curse.

This game was developed jointly by Nintendo EPD and Grezzo and published by Nintendo as a single-player and a multi-player game for the Nintendo 3DS in various countries during October 2015. The game makes use of a new addition - the Totem mechanism which enables two or three Links to stand on top of each other to solve puzzles and reach higher levels.

'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' was the nineteenth game in the main 'The Legend of Zelda' series of video games to be released. It has a large game world and was developed by Nintendo, although Monolith Soft helped to design landscapes. In March 2017 versions for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii U were first released. It was the last game Nintendo issued for the Wii U but in November 2017 an 'Explorer's Edition' for the Switch was released in some countries.

This game itself is set late in the series' timeline. The evil Calamity Ganon forcibly took over the land of Hyrule and Link was badly hurt in fighting against him. Princess Zelda used magic to place Link safely in the Shrine of Resurrection and to trap Ganon and herself in Hyrule Castle. Link awakens 100 years later having lost his memory but gradually regains it as he travels around Hyrule. Ganon's powers are increasing but, after Link manages to defeat him, Princess Zelda seals him away.
