Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with dessert. In the "Cake Mania" video game series players begin work as Jill Evans in an attempt to resuscitate her grandparent's closed bakery. Is it true or false that only bakeries are managed in this series of games?

Answer: False

In the original "Cake Mania" game Jill has just returned from culinary school. In "Cake Mania: Main Street", the fifth of the series, players can control other characters and other shops, including Burger Barn and a flower shop.

The first of the series was released in 2006 by Sandlot Games for Microsoft Windows. It has since been released for many other platforms including Nintendo DS, Apple Mac, and mobile phones.

This game focuses more on time management skills rather than preparation skills or providing recipes.
2. In "Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine" players can compete against some of the stars from the television show of the same name. Which of the following stars doesn't compete, but instead provides the commentary?

Answer: Alton Brown

All of the stars listed above are included in the game. Alton Brown is commentator and players can compete against Cat Cora, Mario Batali or Masaharu Morimoto. Chairman Mark Dacascos is also one of the video game characters.

There are fifteen secret ingredients to choose from and players can choose whether to play against one of the famous chefs or compete against each other. During each culinary battle players create three to six dishes using the secret ingredients before the time runs out.

"Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine" was published in 2008 for both Nintendo DS and Wii platforms by Destineer.
3. There were two video games by Zynga that could be found on Facebook with recipes to learn and complete. Can you identify them on the list below?

Answer: "Cafe World" and "ChefVille"

"Cafe World" was released by Zynga on Facebook in 2009, and shut down in July 2014. "ChefVille" was released on Facebook and Zynga.com (a nonprofit organization) in 2012, and then pulled down in 2015.

"Cafe World" allowed players to staff and run a restaurant, trying to increase their buzz rating. Customer feedback affected a player's buzz rating, so it was important that they be seated and served promptly.

Players of "ChefVille" could create restaurants with specific themes for each, such as Italian or Japanese. As the players mastered recipes they were rewarded by having a successful recipe emailed to them.

Both games could be played for free or players had the option to pay and purchase items.
4. Though players can eventually own five-star restaurants when playing "Order Up!", the skills are first learned by flipping burgers. Which of the restaurant names below do players start in?

Answer: Burger Face

"Order Up!" was first published for Wii in 2008 by Zoo Games, in North America, and followed soon after with releases in Europe and Australia. It was released as "Order Up!: To Go" for iOS and Android by Chillingo in 2012.

When a customer orders a dish, the ingredients appear on the customer's ticket. It's important in this game to learn to multitask, e.g., cooking and prepping, because otherwise any cooked dish completed first will get cold as the rest of the meal is prepared. Successfully completing challenges such as pleasing customers, or getting a good review from a food critic, earn the player coins. As the player's skills advance, the earned coins unlock more recipes and harder challenges.
5. Which of the following was the first video game to be identified with the "Food Network", in which the player must prepare a meal of multiple dishes to be served simultaneously?

Answer: Food Network: Cook or Be Cooked

This video game was published by Namco Banai Games in 2009 for distribution on Wii. It has both single- and multi-player modes. The player must manage their time while preparing multiple dishes for a single meal.

Though the game received fair reviews, there are only a small number of recipes. Combining the recipes allows the player to create more complicated meals, e.g., pancakes and bacon are two separate recipes, but they can be combined into a single meal.
6. When playing "Pizza Tycoon" one must rent or buy their own restaurant before they can begin making pizza. Is it true or false that this game allows you to create and serve your own pizza recipes?

Answer: true

There are a list of standard recipes, but players can also concoct their own creations. These can then be stored and used on future restaurant menus. "Pizza Tycoon" is not only about the baking of pizza, but also the running of the business, stocking ingredients, hiring employees, and even purchasing furniture and decorating. Those of a more nefarious bent can even get involved with the mafia!

The game was published for Amiga, MS-DOS and MS Windows platform by MicroProse, with an original release date in 1994.
7. One video game offers recipes from a celebrity chef who came to prominence with his television debut, "The Naked Chef". Which of the options below would complete the title "What's Cooking? with ___"?

Answer: Jamie Oliver

This video game featuring Jamie Oliver's voice and recipes was released by Atari in 2008 for the Nintendo DS.

This game requires players to create meals within specific time limits. It did not receive good reviews, with some of the reviewers panning it because there weren't enough instructions on how to prepare or cook some the dishes. Several reviews claimed that it would be better categorized as an interactive cookbook than a video game. Still, there are over 100 recipes included.
8. The video game "Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam" offers players four separate restaurants to hone their craft as they attempt to become the best chef in the city. What pesky insects have been added to the kitchens for some realism?

Answer: Flies

Players of this video game start in a hot dog restaurant and will need to master the preparation and serving before they can move on to hamburger, pizza and Mexican restaurants. This game also offers some unique customers such as vampires and aliens. Players, either in single-user or multi-user mode, must pass out menus, take orders, and prepare and serve meals, all in an effort to please the customers and earn tips in order to advance.

The game was originally released in North America and Europe in November 2008 by Virtual Toys. It can be played on Wii, Nintendo DSi and PlayStation platforms.
9. The video game "Hell's Kitchen: The Game", was released after the reality television show of the same name had been on for three seasons. They both feature the same acerbic chef. Can you identify him from the list below?

Answer: Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay has been the host of "Hell's Kitchen" television show since 2005. The video game was released by Ubisoft in 2008 for Wii, Nintendo DS, Windows and iOS platforms. During the video game players can compete singly or in multi-player mode.

Several sources quote Chef Ramsay saying "I had a great time doing the voice for my own animation. Being in a video game is a new experience for me and I'm very pleased with the results."

The player must manage the restaurant and gain points without provoking Ramsay to the point where he shuts down the kitchen. Customers must be seated, orders taken, food prepared correctly and delivered, and the tables must be bussed before the customers can depart. Customers can order appetizers, entree and dessert so getting all of the dishes made correctly without under- or over-cooking is essential.

One game bonus is that some of Chef Ramsay's recipes have been included for those inclined to attempt them in a real kitchen.
10. In the "Cooking Mama" series of games, Mama encourages and instructs players as they prepare many separate dishes. Which of these titles is NOT part of the series?

Answer: Cooking Mama 2: Food Fight!

"Cooking Mama" was first released in 2006 on Nintendo DS by Office Create (though they later changed the company name to Cooking Mama Limited). Mama has starred as the main character is a series of cooking games as well as several spin-offs such as "Babysitting Mama" and "Crafting Mama".

Each of the games in the cooking series includes many recipes and mini games to help teach techniques. Mama encourages the player to prepare and cook the dishes, with more difficult dishes being added as a player gains skills.
