Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Unravel", the playable character is made from an unusual substance. What is it?

Answer: yarn

The character is called "Yarny", and is made up of yarn, primarily red yarn with white yarn for eyes.

As Yarny moves across levels, he leaves a strand of yarn behind. Part of the challenge in the game is finding a path that leaves enough yarn to get to the next spool of yarn.

While on a trip, game creator Martin Sahlin borrowed yarn from "some punkrock kid" (according to the credits) to create an early version of Yarny.
2. In what real-world country does the action of "Unravel" take place?

Answer: Sweden

While none of the characters speak and the story is told through images, there are written words on signs, newspaper headlines, and most noticeably on the embroidered pillow on the starting screen. The words on this pillow are "lycka blommar ur sma enkla ting" which translates from Swedish as "happiness blooms from the small things".

The game was made by Coldwood, which is located in Sweden. Martin Sahlin, the creator behind the game, was inspired by a trip in the forests of northern Sweden when making the game.
3. There are secret buttons to collect in 11 of the game's 12 levels. How many secret buttons are in each of these 11 levels?

Answer: Five

The only level without any collectible buttons is "Last leaf", and the player is too busy trying to survive a snowstorm to do anything else. That level leads directly to "Renewed", the last level of the game.

Once the buttons are found, they disappear from the level and appear as red sparkles in future playthroughs. The found buttons appear (in order) on the picture frames in the level select screens. (Except for "Renewed" - these appear on the "Last leaf" frame instead.)
4. What do you have to tear down in the first level, "Thistle and weeds", in order to obtain the secret trophy/achievement "Gardener"?

Answer: thistles

You need to pull all the thistles in the level with your yarn lasso in one playthrough.

Some of the thistles are necessary to progress through the level, others may reveal secrets.

A thistle is the logo of the Encyclopędia Britannica and the floral emblem of Scotland.
5. In the second level, "The sea", what do you use to fly through the trees?

Answer: kite

While in later levels you do fly on both a plastic bag ("Mountain trek") and bird ("The letter"), the kite is in the second level ("The sea").

The kite winder will appear next to the level's picture frame once you unlock the associated memory.
6. To earn the "Pacifist" secret trophy/achievement, what do you have to avoid attacking in the third level, "Berry mire"?

Answer: mosquitoes

The mosquitoes can be annoying. They swarm around Yarny and you need to be careful not to accidentally toss out your lasso and attack one.

Fortunately, the mosquitoes leave you alone in some sections of the level, and when the moose (or elk, for the European term) walks by, they go off after the large animal. However, this trophy/achievement won't trigger until the end of the level.
7. In which level are you chased by a vole and are taken for a ride by a fish?

Answer: Mountain trek

You encounter the vole early on, and jump on mushrooms to release spores to drive it back. That enables you to get the branch that you ride when you lasso the lure on the fish. The vole then chases you later in the level.

What to call the vole required a bit of detective work. It's not a mole, and while people online are referring to it as a gopher, gophers are in North and Central America, not Sweden. A vole looks the part and is native to Sweden. A vole is my best guess and I'm sticking to it.

The secret trophy/achievement in the fourth level, "Mountain trek", is "Get a clew", which you earn by obtaining the secret button in the maze. This is not a typo, but a bit of wordplay: one of the definitions of "clew" is a ball of yarn, cord, or thread.
8. While you almost collect the sixth missing piece at the end of the sixth level, "Down in a hole", it is stolen from you and you need to get to the end of the seventh level, "How much is enough", in order to finally collect it. What creature steals the piece from you?

Answer: a bird

While it is frustrating to have the level reward taken from you, it is a clever way to extend the game a bit, and the frustration adds another dimension to the emotional journey the game takes you on.

Recovering the memories in "Down in a hole" will cause protest patches to appear on the wall behind the level's photo frame.
9. What do you need to break on your way to the letterbox in the eighth level, "The letter", in order to earn the secret trophy/achievement "Obsessive"?

Answer: ice

While most of the breakable ice is located in the frozen streams, there is a small puddle in the road that must also be broken in order to earn this secret trophy/achievement.

In "The letter", you need to move quickly between cover points to avoid the swooping birds. At one point you even have to hide under a bucket as you move across an open field. Near the end, however, you release a trapped bird who then carries you to the letterbox.
10. In the eleventh level, "Last leaf", you must survive a dark and windy snowstorm. What do you use in the beginning of the level to help you survive?

Answer: a lantern

You need to drag the lantern behind you and stay linked in order to avoid getting blown away. At some points you need to tie your yarn to the lantern, but you won't be able to move without untying the knot in order to give your yarn the necessary slack.

Ultimately, however, you are forced to abandon the lantern and make your way through the snowstorm without it. This does not end well, and you collapse in the snow. But that's not the end of the story.
