Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog took the world by storm and for good reason. For the first time, Mario had genuine competition in the industry. Whereas Mario was known for jumping on Goombas and Koopas, Sonic was known for his speed. Now here's a question most of you probably haven't thought much about. Just how fast can Sonic run?

Answer: roughly 670,000,000 miles per hour

Believe it or not, the official canon of the franchise clocks Sonic's top speed around the speed of light. As of "Sonic Adventure", Sonic was able to use the Light Speed Dash which hurtled his body through a trail of rings at light speed. Furthermore, in the "Archie" comic series "Hyper Sonic" #134, he was able to stop two missiles headed in opposite directions by running so fast that time stopped completely.

...and that was WITHOUT turning into Super Sonic.
2. "Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard" is a game that parodies the gaming industry and its many cliches. Towards the end of the game, Matt comes across a JRPG hero that speaks in text boxes. This character's name is a reference to a "Final Fantasy" protagonist but which one?

Answer: Cloud from "Final Fantasy VII"

The character's name is Altos Tratus with both 'alto' and 'stratus' being two different types of clouds. Furthermore, Altos heralds from the "Penultimate Illusion" games, a fancy way of saying "Final Fantasy". In addition to a massive sword and several spells, Altos must wait his until his turn gauge fills before he can choose his next attack, much like a standard RPG hero.
3. In "Luigi's Mansion", Mario's oft-forgotten brother wields the Poltergust 3000, a ghost-sucking vacuum that he uses in his quest to find his brother. In which video game ghost town would Luigi NOT have to use it?

Answer: Triste from "Okage: Shadow King"

Lavender Town--at least in "Pokemon Red" and "Pokemon Blue"--features a massive tower that acts as a graveyard for deceased Pokemon, Guadosalam from "Final Fantasy X" contains a portal that leads to the Farplane where the spirits of the deceased gather and Halloween Town--obviously--features more than a few ghosts.

Triste however is a gathering place for people who leave so little an impact on the world that they've become transparent. While its inhabitants are certainly ghost-like, they are not actually dead.
4. In "Toejam & Earl", a pair of aliens from the planet Funkotron crash land on Earth and have to recover the parts to their ship so they can escape. Scattered throughout each level are presents whose contents remain unknown until they are used at least once. How much does Carrot Man charge the duo for identifying an unknown present?

Answer: 2 bucks

Utilizing Carrot Man's services can be essential early on as some negative effect presents such as 'raincloud' or 'Total Bummer!' may pop up at any time. Once the majority of the presents have been identified, money can be saved for buying the services of other allies. For 1 buck, the wizard will fully heal the duo and for 5 bucks, the opera singer can kill any onscreen enemies. Furthermore, more items can be purchased from mailboxes with the price depending on the desired present.
5. The Xbox 360 introduced gamers to the achievement system which rewarded players for completing certain tasks within the game. The system was so popular that Sony later implemented a similar trophy system. Wait a minute... This sounds awfully familiar... Which Playstation 1 hero first utilized a system like this?

Answer: Spyro from "Spyro the Dragon"

After beating any of the first three "Spyro" games, players unlocked a list of tasks known as 'skill points' which included things like destroying all the seaweed in a water level or passing a time trial under a certain time. Completing a task would reward players with an extra life and completing them all often unlocked an epilogue.

The skill point system was later implemented into the "Ratchet & Clank" series.
6. Silent protagonists rely much more on character interaction to build their personality as speaking isn't a viable option. On occasions though, these character's do briefly break their silence. Which of these 'silent' protagonists speaks the most?

Answer: The new recruit from "Saints Row"

Claude never speaks in "Grand Theft Auto III" while both Jack and Crono had two lines each. The unnamed protagonist of "Saints Row" however has four lines. At some point during the last mission of the game's four campaigns, the protagonist will speak a single line. In the subsequent sequels, the protagonist breaks his 'silence' and becomes quite talkative.
7. Originally slated to be the protagonist of the "Megaman X" series, Zero has played an important role in two different series in the "Megaman" franchise. However, Zero also has a nasty habit of getting himself killed. Just how many times has Zero died?

Answer: Three

Zero was first killed by Vile at the end of "Megaman X" only to be rebuilt in the sequel. Zero was killed again at the end of "Megaman X5" and bestowed his saber onto X only to return in "Megaman X6". Zero's third and final death was his noble sacrifice aboard Ragnarok in "Megaman Zero 4" in which he fought and destroyed Dr. Weil as the space station burned up in the atmosphere.
8. In "Half-Life", theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman gets to work within the Anomalous Materials Lab with the Black Mesa research facility. After pushing a specimen into a Anti-Mass Spectrometer for analysis, a 'resonance cascade' occurs opening up a portal between Earth and what alien world?

Answer: Xen

After regaining consciousness, Gordon is tasked with heading to the surface for help only to find that the rescue team that has been sent in has orders to kill the aliens and the scientists as part of a government cover-up. Towards the end of the game, Gordon enters a portal and journeys across Xen itself in order to destroy the Nihilanth which is maintaining the portal between worlds.

After his victory, he is placed into stasis by the G-Man until the events of "Half-Life 2". This disaster would come to as the Black Mesa Incident.
9. "Castlevania" is arguably Konami's biggest and most beloved franchise. Since its inception, the world has seen many members of the Belmont family come and go. With the power of their Vampire Killer whip, Count Dracula and his forces have always been vanquished by the Belmonts. What was unique about the "Castlevania Legends" protagonist?

Answer: The protagonist was a woman

Konami's first attempt at a "Castlevania" origin story was "Castlevania Legends" for the original Gameboy. It spun the tale of Sonia Belmont and her quest to defeat Dracula. At the end of the game, it is revealed that she fathers Trevor Belmont with Alucard.

Unfortunately, the game is considered non-canon and has been referred to as an 'embarrassment'. Sonia was slated to return in the Dreamcast exclusive "Castlevania Resurrection" but the game was canceled shortly after it was announced.
10. "Mischief Makers" is a 2D platformer for the N64 which features the main character journeying across the Planet Clancer in search of her creator Professor Theo. However, his perverted tendencies towards her often results in her hurtling him into the distance thus beginning her search all over again. What was her name?

Answer: Marina Liteyears

Marina's full name is Ultra-Intergalactic-Cybot G Marina Liteyears. She occasionally scuffles with her copycat and enemy Calina as well as the warriors of the Beastector. Her main form of attack is grabbing enemies and shaking them violently or tossing them around. If players manage to obtain all of the game's gold gems, Marina will be transformed into a human after the credits with her appearance differing depending on the age that players put in when they created that save file.
