Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Goldeneye 007", what does the Z button do on the Nintendo 64 controller?

Answer: Fire the gun

"Goldeneye 007" was a classic Nintendo 64 first-person shooter brought to players by Rare before they were picked up and 'eaten' by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 console. Becoming Nintendo Game of the Year after it was released, it was the epitome of a near-perfect fifth-gen game. With an easy-to-control movement system, players could change weapons with A, reload with B, aim with the R button and analog stick, and hit or hold the Z button to fire weapons, whether they be guns, mines, or otherwise (ie. throwing knives).

The spiritual sequel to this game, "Perfect Dark", use very similar control schemes in its campaign.
2. Only one button can be found on the Wii Balance Board. If you press it, what does it do?

Answer: Syncs the board to the system

The Wii Balance Board (as a controller) is quite an odd device. A platform with a left and right 'slab' to calculate weight, BMI, balance, etc., it only has one button on its front side used to sync the peripheral to the actual Wii console. In doing this, it ensures that all activities done are to the moment. For the most part, you'll navigate through menus and such with the Wii remote, but some activities or exercises begin when you fulfill a certain motion on the board.

For example, you can only begin specific yoga poses or stretches in "Wii Fit" when both feet are firmly planted on the Balance Board. To go back to the Home menu, pause, or turn off the game, you can use the regular Wii Remote.
3. Playing the classic "Super Mario Bros." on the NES, what happens when you hit the A button?

Answer: You jump

A basic game on Nintendo's most basic console, "Super Mario Bros." is one of the earliest console Mario titles. The classic NES controller has a directional pad, an A button, a B button, 'Start', and 'Select'. A allows the player to jump while pressing B can shoot fireballs if Mario has the power of the Fire Flower. Holding B while moving left or right will allow Mario to run, making it easier to perform farther jumps.

Many of these game mechanics appeared in proceeding games in the series, and Virtual Console versions of the game try to emulate the style with the Wii Classic Controller and the Wii Remote.

The Nintendo DS game "New Super Mario Bros." and its Wii counterpart both make use of their respective control schemes to make the game as authentically retro as possible.
4. You're on the menu screen of "Lego Rock Band" for the Xbox 360. You've hit the green drum pad or the green fret button. What have you just done?

Answer: Selected your option

The nice thing about the "Rock Band" franchise is the fact that many of the instrument peripherals that are circulated will work. On the Xbox 360, the drums feature a control pad and the four coloured buttons (blue, red, yellow, and green for X, B, Y, and A (respectively). Hitting the green pad of the drums or the green fret button of a guitar is basically an affirmative on any option you have selected during gameplay. "Lego Rock Band", released in late 2009, has the same menu select scheme as the previous "Rock Band" titles. Players on bass will have the same controls as the guitar player and anyone on microphone makes use of a typical Xbox 360 controller to navigate. With drums, one can either use the control pad or hit the drum pads themselves to find their way around.
5. You're playing the Nintendo 64 game "Pokemon Snap". The point of the game is to take pictures of Pokemon. What happens when you hit the A button?

Answer: You take a picture

Capitalizing off the success of the "Pokemon" games and TV series, "Pokemon Snap" was released in 1999 on the Nintendo 64 (before the less-popular "Hey You! Pikachu!"). Basically, you hop into a confusing vehicle that can ride in rivers, on tracks, across sandy beaches, and on the surface of the moon and you take photographs of less than half the total Pokemon from the "Red, Blue, and Yellow" series of games.

The vehicle moves on its own (you can speed it up eventually with the right trigger) and you can collect items throughout the game to help you get specific reactions from your subjects (ie. the Pokeflute, which has its purpose changed from the original game for the most part, and Smoke Bombs/Pester Balls). You need to hold the Z button down to prime the camera and its crosshair and you press A to actually take the shot.

When they're developed, you choose the best ones.
6. "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories" for the Wii is a unique game in the sense that the items you keep on you all serve a purpose. The flashlight, for example, can attract enemies but it's necessary if you want to find your way around. If you press the '- button', what happens?

Answer: You turn the flashlight on/off

Although the game was also released on the Playstation 2 at a later date, "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories" was released in December 2009 for the Nintendo Wii as a reimagining of the first game in the series (on the Playstation 1 console). Harry Mason wakes up having crashed his car in the snow outside Silent Hill. he searches the city for his daughter, Cybil, but finds that he's living a nightmare. All of the items on Harry's person, a flashlight, cell phone, GPS, etc. are integral to the gameplay.

The flashlight must be pointed ahead by the player's Wii Remote and while it alerts creatures to your presence, it is also necessary to navigate the darkened streets of Silent Hill. The phone can pick up radio static to alert you to enemies, and occasionally, calls will come through (you listen to these by holding the Wii Remote close to your ear). To dial the cell phone, you use the - button. To simply take out your cell, hit up on the D-Pad.
7. You're playing the "Buzz!: The Mega Quiz" game on the Playstation 2. This game comes with its own characteristic buzzer set. What colour is the top, spherical button?

Answer: Red

Designed for the games in the "Buzz!" series for the Playstation 2 and 3, this peripheral plugs into the console and acts as the controller for the entire game. Consisting of a large, red button and four rectangular buttons (in blue, orange, green, and yellow, respectively), most of the games attributed to it are in the form of trivia or quiz challenges, whether they be general knowledge, about movies, or otherwise.

While the series also spreads to the Playstation Portable handheld, the buzzers do not. Hitting the red button is usually reserved for buzzer-style questions in these games.

The controllers are also used for mini-game style games from the same series (under the title "Buzz! Junior"). While the series never really picked up in North America, many of its titles were released in Europe over the years.
8. You have either a Playstation 3 Sixaxis controller or a Dualshock 3 controller in your hands. The console is not on. What happens when you hold down the center button (with the Playstation logo on it)?

Answer: The console starts up

In the seventh generation of consoles, controllers were built with practicality in mind. The Wii Remote, Xbox 360 controller, and Sixaxis/Dualshock 3 all have options to return the player to their respective menus screens. In the case of the Wii Remote, the Home Button, once pressed, gives the option to return to the Wii Menu while the Xbox Button does this with the Dashboard and the PS3 controller returns to its XrossMediaBar. With the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, holding these buttons while the console is either on or off will turn the system on or off. With the Wii Remote, you hold the Power button in the top left corner instead.
9. You're playing the original "Sonic the Hedgehog" on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. You're standing still. What does the C button do? (Hint: It does the same thing as the B button.)

Answer: Makes Sonic jump

This is a simple, classic game that has appeared on many systems since its debut in 1991. In the original version and sequels on the Sega Genesis, the A, B, and C buttons (all of them are in a row on the right side of the controller) all make Sonic or Tails or Knuckles jump. Pressing both down on the pad and one of these buttons could also make said characters zoom across the screen.

Although all versions of the controller came with these and a Start button, later versions also featured the X, Y, and Z buttons in a row above the A, B, C.

These "Sonic" games were later rereleased on the Virtual Console, and all you need to do to play is hold the Wii Remote sideways (like in "New Super Mario Bros. Wii") and play like you would with a Genesis control pad.
10. You're playing your trusty ocarina in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" (or "Majora's Mask") on the Nintendo 64. What happens when you press the B button?

Answer: You stop playing

When Link goes into Ocarina mode, all else means nothing. The world stops turning. Time stands still. That's when you need to use the A button or any of the C buttons. Pressing these five buttons will cause Link to play notes which, when played in sequence, can teleport him to specific locations, create certain environmental effects, or prompt for an event to occur. Wiggling the analog stick around allows Link to change the pitch of the notes he plays, making them sharp and flat, while pressing the B button backs him out of the instrument completely. Later games, like "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" for the Gamecube, change the music mechanic a bit though Link's 'tunes' are still an integral part of the series.
