While a handful of Pokemon in this quiz meet the 'used by a gym leader' requirement, Geodude is the ideal fit given the other criteria making the matches. Geodude, a basic, unevolved rock-type Pokemon, is the first foe you'll face in your very first gym battle in "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow", specifically against Brock, who specializes in rock-types. Geodude evolves into Graveler at level 25 and then again into Golem, but only if traded to another player (via the link cable on the original Game Boy handhelds).
The Alolan version of Geodude found in "Pokemon Sun" and "Pokemon Moon" is dual-type (electric and rock) but that happened nearly twenty years after his debut.
2. Can learn TM16
Answer: Psyduck
Though you need to use HM03 (Surf) to grab it off an island south of Lavender Town, TM16, better known as Pay Day, is a fun technique to master because it's the only one in the game that can result in earning a bit more cash from battles. Organically learned by Meowth, the TM can actually be learned by more than just that Pokemon and its evolution (Persian). Seventeen of the original one hundred fifty Pokemon could use this technique in the original games, Psyduck and Golduck amongst them. Psyduck is the only one in this quiz to be able to learn it.
3. Can not be caught in the wild
Answer: Porygon
Porygon, the Virtual Pokemon, appears late in the Kanto Pokedex and can be a bit of a grind to obtain because you can only grab him from the Team Rocket owned and operated Game Corner in Celadon City. Porygon is technically a normal-type Pokemon but he is almost a blank template for a lot of TMs, so he can be a utility member of any team. Porygon is also the only Pokemon to use the technique Conversion, allowing it to change its type to whatever the opponent's type is.
4. A dual-type Pokemon
Answer: Slowpoke
Slowpoke isn't the only dual-type Pokemon in this quiz, but because Geodude is used in the first gym of the game, Slowpoke is the only Pokemon eligible for this slot. Geodude is both a rock-type and a ground-type Pokemon while Slowpoke would, technically, be super effective as a water-type and a psychic-type (water beats rock!). Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro at level 37 and can be caught at the Seafoam Islands among other places with the Super Rod.
5. Learns Substitute at level 47
Answer: Mr. Mime
Substitute is a unique ability that allows a Pokemon to create a literal substitution to take their attacks until broken. Unlike most moves in the game, Substitute can be learned via TM by ANY Pokemon (in the first generation at least). The only Pokemon that can learn it without a TM is Mr. Mime, who can only be obtained through an in-game trade on Route 2; the Pokemon that needs to be traded is reliant on the version of the game. Substitute is the last move he learns, very late on in his levelling up.
6. Evolves using a stone
Answer: Vulpix
Vulpix is the only one of the Pokemon in this quiz to evolve with a stone, specifically a Fire Stone, in this quiz, though a total of three Pokemon use this stone in Generation One (Vulpix, Eevee, and Growlithe) and fourteen total use stones of any sort of the original one hundred fifty. Vulpix evolves into Ninetales and can only be found in "Pokemon Blue", usually in the Pokemon Mansion.
Interestingly, in "Pokemon Sun" and "Pokemon Moon", Alolan Vulpix can evolve with an Ice Stone, changing type entirely.
7. A poison-type Pokemon
Answer: Koffing
Literally known as the Poison Gas Pokemon, this levitating, pocked orb goes around belching toxic fog, evolving into Weezing at level 35. In "Pokemon Red" and "Pokemon Blue", Koffing can be caught in Cinnabar Island's Pokemon Mansion, but Koffing can only be obtained through trading in "Yellow". Because of its nature, Koffing is also one of the few Pokemon who can learn both Selfdestruct and Explosion, techniques that will do damage to foes, but instantly knock out the user.
8. Not caught in "Pokemon Yellow"
Answer: Magmar
Like Koffing, Magmar is one of thirteen Pokemon not catchable in "Pokemon Yellow" (though you can trade them in). In fact, Magmar also isn't catchable in "Pokemon Red", only appearing in the Pokemon Mansion in "Blue". Normally, Magmar is a Pokemon who learns strong fire and poison-type moves and, in the first generation, he stood alone.
He didn't receive an earlier or evolved form until later when Magby (a pre-evolution) and Magmortar showed up.
9. Evolves at level 30
Answer: Dratini
Showing up very late in the Kanto Pokedex, Dratini is the first in an evolutionary chain of dragon-type Pokemon and one of the toughest to catch because it can only be caught using rods in the Safari Zone. Dratini evolves into Dragonair at Level 30 and then into the friendly giant Dragonite at level 55, one of the latest evolutions of the game. Because of its unique nature, Dratini can learn dragon, normal, electric, and psychic-type abilities, constricting and paralyzing foes and ultimately learning Hyper Beam (at level 50 if it doesn't evolve).
10. Starts with Comet Punch
Answer: Hitmonchan
Only two Pokemon in Generation One learn this technique-- Hitmonchan and Kangaskhan. Hitmonchan can be obtained from the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City though you have a choice between claiming him or Hitmonlee, a much more fighting-centric Pokemon who fights with his feet. Hitmonlee, however, levels up to be able to use punches of different types (ice, fire, thunder, etc.). None of the Pokemon mentioned here level up in this generation.
