Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where meals will be served

Answer: Dining car

A dining car usually provides a restaurant type service. The car generally has the galley at one end with tables set up on either side so that a server can reach every patron. Many of these cars provide what is considered to be a high end dining experience.
2. Car with elevated portion for observation

Answer: Dome car

Dome cars generally have a portion of the car built up with additional windows for scenic viewing. Some of these cars have dining and/or lounge facilities in both the upper and lower decks.
3. Where the checked luggage can be found

Answer: Baggage car

Most railroads do not allow passenger access to baggage cars, so baggage stored there can only be retrieved at the passenger's final destination. A cargo car or a passenger car could also be re-purposed as a baggage car.
4. The car with the engine

Answer: Locomotive

Generally this is the first car of the train. The are many sources for engine power such as steam, gas, electric or battery.
5. Passenger car filled with rows of seats

Answer: Open coach

These cars are designed for carrying many passengers at a time. Sometimes the seats are arranged back to front, and sometimes with sets of seats facing each other. These type of cars are most usually found on shorter distance routes.
6. Car built to carry the mail

Answer: Post office car

These cars were built to carry the mail from one location to another. They were staffed not by the railway but by the postal service. Because passenger's were not allowed access, these cars were generally located just before the baggage car.
7. Car with private or semi-private seating

Answer: Compartment coach

Compartment cars generally had a hallway with doors accessing individual compartments. Each compartment was usually set up with bench seats facing each other. Because these compartments often had overhead storage, passengers with small carry-on luggage could store it with them.
8. Car designed to carry livestock

Answer: Cattle car

These cars carry live animals on either single- or multi-levels, depending on the size of the animals. These cars often transport livestock to be slaughtered, and the animals were packed into the cars and taken to market with little planning for their comfort. Alonzo Mather developed a more humane stock car in 1880.
9. The last train car

Answer: Caboose

The caboose was often the quarters for some of the train crew as well as the conductor's office. Many cabooses were built with a cupola so that crew could easily inspect the length of the train.
10. Cars that can be configured for sitting or sleeping

Answer: Sleeper

Though sleeping cars had been in operation as early as 1839, it wasn't until George Pullman began designing and building Pullman cars that they became popular on most US railroads.
