Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tower in Toronto, Canada, was the world's tallest structure for over 30 years. Which of these was originally built by a transcontinental railway company?

Answer: CN Tower

The tower was built by the Canadian National Railway, though it was transferred to Canada Lands Company in 1995. The tower is 1,815.4ft (553.33m) high, with a revolving restaurant located at a height of 1,151.6ft (346m). The restaurant completes a revolution approximately every 72 minutes.

In 2011 a new attraction was added to the tower, EdgeWalk. Six tourists at a time are given the opportunity of a hands-free 30-minute walk around the tower on a five foot wide ledge (just above the restaurant at approximately 1,168ft (356m)) while attired in a safety harnesses attached to an overhead rail.
2. Opened in 1964, this London tower was built for microwave communications. The tower, reaching a height of 620ft (189m), was closed to the public in 1980. Today it is recognized by the name it was given when the General Post Office (GPO) was privatized. Which of the towers below does this describe?

Answer: BT Tower

The Top of the Tower restaurant on the 34th floor completed a full rotation about every 22 minutes. It was closed to the public (with the rest of the tower) in 1980. However, for the 50th anniversary of the tower, celebrated in 2015, lotteries were held for a limited number of lunch and dinner services.

Because the tower also transmitted military signals it was protected by the Official Secrets Act. Most sources state that it wasn't until the 1990s that the site appeared on Ordnance Survey maps.
3. Since 1978, the Dallas, Texas, USA, skyline has included the 50-story Reunion tower. The top of the tower is enclosed in a geodesic dome which has earned which of the following nicknames?

Answer: The Ball

The exterior of the dome is created with 259 lights at the intersections of the aluminum struts. When turned on the lights create what appears to be a ball. When first installed the lights were yellow-gold, but in 2011 these were updated with multi-colored LEDs. The lights are individually controlled by computer. There are specially designed light shows for many holidays.

The tower is 560ft (171m) from the ground to the top of the antennas. The observation decks offer not only the spectacular view but also interactive exhibits which allow you to view the city from exterior cameras.

After renovations in 2009 Wolfgang Puck opened the restaurant Five Sixty. This restaurant rotates about once an hour which allows diners to see the entire 360 degree viewpoint during a meal.
4. Completed in 1968, this tower in Munich, Germany, was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The tower hosts the Restaurant 181 and a small Rock and Roll museum. Which of the listed landmarks does this describe?

Answer: Olympiaturm

Tourists can visit and view all of the answers above as well as many other varied types of attractions. The Olympiaturm, or Olympic Tower, was designed by architect Sebastian Rosenthal. With the spire at the top, the tower reaches a height of 955ft (291m).

The restaurant is found at a height of 594ft (181m--though some sites list 182m). The time of a complete rotation of the restaurant is around 50 minutes.
5. In the Macau Special Administration Region of the People's Republic of China, a tower was completed in 2001. This tower was commissioned by Stanley Ho Hung-Sun after seeing the Sky Tower in Auckland. Which of these Chinese landmarks is being described?

Answer: Macau Tower

The Macau Tower is 1,108ft (338m) if measured to the top of the antenna spire. The tower has served as a "roadblock" for several "Amazing Race" shows. The revolving restaurant is the 360° Café, serving traditional Chinese and Portuguese dishes. A single rotation of the restaurant takes 90 minutes. The restaurant is at a height of 764ft (233m).

This tower also has some special entertainment. Tourists can sign up for a Bungy Jump, SkyJump or SkyWalk from/at a height of 764ft (233m). There is also a Tower Climb to the top of the tower, or a climbing wall of 105ft (32m).
6. This tower was built for the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics regatta and opened ten days before the race. Which of these towers is located the capital of Estonia?

Answer: Tallinn TV Tower

The tower, with the antenna spire, reaches 1,030ft (314m). The observation deck and restaurant are at height of about 557ft (170m).

The tower was closed to the public in 2007 for remodelling and reopened in 2012. The tower's mascot is an alien named ETI (name selected from visitor surveys during 2012). In 2016 an exhibit called "August 1991" opened displaying information on the 1991 Soviet attack on Tallinn and the tower.
7. The Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising (Most SNP) Bratislava, Slovakia, crosses the Danube River. The structure atop this cable-stayed bridge has earned it a new nickname, can you pick it from these possibles?

Answer: UFO Bridge

The bridge was built between 1967 and 1972. It makes a compelling sight with what appears to be an alien UFO saucer atop two pillars spanning a bridge which crosses the Danube River. One of the pylons has an elevator, the other has 430 stairs. The revolving restaurant, after a remodel completed in 2005, was re-opened as UFO WATCH.TASTE.GROOVE.

The observation deck at the top of the structure is at a height of 312ft(95m). The bridge itself was built so that the top deck is for automobile traffic, and the lower deck is for pedestrians.
8. This tower located in Niagara Falls, Canada, celebrated a 50th anniversary in 2015. Which of the towers listed below has a view of both the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls?

Answer: Skylon Tower

The "wrong" answers are all buildings in Niagara, but not towers.

The Skylon tower has two restaurants, the Summit Suite buffet which does not revolve, and the Revolving Dining Room on a lower level. This tower has three "Yellow Bug" elevators which will travel to the top in 52 seconds, the first in Canada to have only a rear guide rail.

The base of the tower has been built as a general entertainment center with shops, restaurants, an arcade and a 3D theater. The tower itself is 520ft (160m) to the top of the antenna spire.
9. Construction for this Australian tower was completed and opened to public access in 1981. Four sections of the tower are open to the public and two contain restaurants: Sydney Tower Dining and 360 Bar and Dining. Can you identify this superstructure?

Answer: Sydney Tower

Though all of the answers are Sydney landmarks, only the Sydney Tower fits the description. The tower, with a lightning rod as the highest point, is 1,014ft (309m) tall. The tower also has a space for catering large events and an observation deck, the Sydney Tower Eye. The hyperboloid tower was designed by architect Donald Crone.

360 Bar and Dining is on level one and Sydney Tower Buffet is on the second level. It takes 90 minutes for a complete revolution, surely enough time for a leisurely meal.
10. In a structure originally built for the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle, Washington, USA, there were two restaurants. This was remodelled to host the single SkyCity restaurant. Which of these structures can be found in Seattle?

Answer: Space Needle

Edward E. Carlson was chairman of the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle, and wanted to build a tower. Architect John Graham was soon involved on the project. Though the idea was grand there was no place to build the structure until a 120x120ft (37x37m) plot was found. The building was ready for the fair when the last elevator installation was completed a day prior to the opening. The Space Needle, when including the antenna spire, reaches 605ft (184.41m).

Originally there were two restaurants, the Eye of the Needle and the Emerald Suite. After remodelling in 2000, the single SkyCity restaurant was opened. The restaurant completes a full revolution in 47 minutes. Diners are warned not to place items on the windowsill as it remains stationary and the floor below revolves.
