Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!"

Answer: Alka-Seltzer

Howie Cohen claimed the catchphrase for Alka-Seltzer hit him one night after he had eaten way too much food. In 1972 comedian Milt Moss delivered the line for the commercial. The slogan then took on a life of its own. In time, the phrase became so popular that it appeared on buttons and hats without even referencing Alka-Seltzer. A few years later Alka-Seltzer also came up with another famous slogan: "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is."
2. "Let's Go Places"

Answer: Toyota

In 2012, when VP Bill Fay of Toyota introduced the slogan he suggested that it has a double meaning of both a physical adventure as well as innovation and optimism. The slogan was first tied to the newly updated luxury car the Avalon. Mazda has the catchy slogan of "Zoom, zoom" and Volkswagen has "Das Auto".
3. "Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman"

Answer: Secret

Proctor & Gamble launched Secret as the first deodorant and antiperspirant marketed for women in 1956. The slogan was first used in 1972, and by the 1980s the deodorant was number 1 in sales. Secret deodorant works by killing the underarm bacteria that lead to pbody odor. Secret also helps reduce moisture by altering the pH and ultimately blocking the sweat-producing pores.
4. "Silly Rabbit, ______ are for kids!"

Answer: Trix

The rabbit tried his best to get a bowl of General Mills Trix cereal but was always thwarted by some cute kids who would exclaim, "Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids!" The marketing phrase and cartoon rabbit were created by Joe Harris in 1959. Over the years the rabbit has been lucky enough to get a bowl of Trix thanks to customer demand. In reality, a dry cereal loaded with sugar and food dye is a terrible food choice for a real rabbit (and one might argue a child...). Interestingly, the very first Trix mascot was a flamingo, but sadly he did not last long enough to get a name!
5. "Have it your way"

Answer: Burger King

In 1974 "Have it your way" became the long standing slogan of Burger King. The company has tweaked the saying to "Be Your Way" or simply "Your Way". The impetus behind the saying is a subtle reminder that at Burger King it is easy to request what you would like on your burger whereas at McDonald's it is much more difficult. The "Have it your way" slogan was created by the marketing company BBDO.
6. "Betcha can't eat just one!"

Answer: Lay's

The Frito-Lay company was also helped by BBDO marketing for their Lays potato chips. The slogan "Betcha can't eat just one," was launched in 1963 and is so popular because it is true! It is very difficult to eat just one potato chip. Frito-Lay is the largest distributor of snack food and is owned by PepsiCo. Frito-Lay has made efforts to offer healthier alternatives like baked chips and marketing their ingredients as all "natural".
7. "So easy, a caveman can do it"

Answer: GEICO

In 2004 Joe Lawson and Noel Ritter first came up with the slogan "So easy, a caveman can do it" for GEICO to help drive traffic to the company's website. In 2004 the web was still a novelty for many people, so the push was there to reduce the demand on live operators. The Cavemen commercials gained a life of their own including Cavemen who were insulted by the idea things would somehow be harder for them! Of course, GEICO's other famous mascot is the Gecko who appeared in 1999 during a screen actor's strike.
8. " _______: It's in the game"

Answer: EA Sports

In 1993 EA Sports started using the slogan "EA Sports, it's in the game". Interestingly the slogan was originally "If it's in the game, it's in the game". So the message the company was trying to portray is that their game was as much like the real sport as they could make it. When an EA Sports game is loaded the slogan is said by Andrew Anthony. Interestingly, EA Sports is not tied in with any one video counsel, so they were able to sell their products to all the different platforms.
9. "Because I'm worth it"

Answer: L'Oreal

The L'Oreal company started using Ilon Specht's slogan "Because I'm worth it" in 1971 to convince consumers it was worth spending a little more money for their makeup over the cheaper competitor at the time, Clairol. The slogan suggests that the consumer deserves the best, and the product would give them confidence by looking their best. The copywriter Specht in a 2021 interview said she wanted the product to empower and benefit the woman rather than simply making the woman a prettier object for men.
10. "Obey Your Thirst"

Answer: Sprite

By 1996 Sprite's slogan "I Like the Sprite in You!" had grown stale marked by decreased sales. Donald Rifkin, an employee of Lowe & Partners quickly came up with the slogan "Obey your thirst!" Rifkin later said he got the idea from a 1971 speech of governor Ronald Reagan who was telling boy scouts on a hot day if nothing else to make sure to obey their thirst! The Coca-Cola Company, in an effort to reach Millennials, set their Sprite commercials to hip-hop and associated them with sports like basketball to reach a younger audience.
