Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of Canada's 13 provinces and territories, which two have a land border with Alaska?

Answer: Yukon & British Columbia

Yukon lies in the extreme northwest corner of Canada and is the smallest of the country's three territories. Yukon's 752-mile border with Alaska stretches along the 141 degree west longitude line. British Columbia borders Yukon to the north and the US states of Washington, Idaho and Montana to the south. The province's northwest border is with Alaska.
2. Sudan, Africa's largest country, is comparable in size with which Australian state/territory?

Answer: Western Australia

With a land area of just over 1 million sq miles, Western Australia covers more than one-third of Australia. Russia's Sakha Republic is the only national subdivision in the world that is larger than Western Australia, which is more than one and a half times the size of the US state of Alaska.
3. Lumphini Park is a 142-acre recreational area in which Asian capital city?

Answer: Bangkok

Lumphini Park sits in the heart of the main business district, on the north side of Rama IV Road in Bangkok, Thailand. Popular with evening joggers, everyone comes to a standstill at 6pm every evening when the national anthem is played. Cycling within the park is allowed only between 5am and 3pm, and both smoking and dogs are prohibited.
4. The national flags of Monaco, Gibraltar, Greenland, Georgia and Dubai have which two principal colors in common?

Answer: Red & White

The Monaco flag consists simply of two horizontal bars, red over white. The Gibraltar flag consists of a red bar under a red castle on a white background. The Greenland flag is an inverted Monacan flag with an offset circle of opposite colors. Examples of red & black flags include Albania, Angola and Papua New Guinea; green & white include Pakistan, Nigeria and Algeria; blue & white include Greece, Honduras, Argentina and Israel.
5. Calypso Deep, the deepest point in the Mediterranean at 17,280 feet, is in which sea?

Answer: Ionian Sea

The Ionian Sea is bounded the Adriatic Sea to the north, by southern Italy and Sicily to the west, by Albania to the northeast, and by Greece to the east. Calypso Deep is in the southeastern part of the Ionian Sea, just off the Greek coast.
6. Which English city is home to the De Montfort University?

Answer: Leicester

Named after Simon de Montfort, a 13th-Century Earl of Leicester, De Montfort University is one of two universities in the city of Leicester. It began life with the amalgamation of Leicester College of Technology and Leicester College of Art in 1969 and later became Leicester Polytechnic. The name was changed in 1992 when the facility acquired university status.
7. At 24,836 feet, Gangkhar Puensum was the highest unclimbed mountain in the world at the end of the 20th Century. It is the highest point in which Asian country?

Answer: Bhutan

Gangkhar Puensum is located in Bhutan near the border with China. One reason why this peak has remained unconquered by climbers is the prohibition on mountain climbing in Bhutan since 1994. The rationale for this ban is twofold: firstly, because local customs consider many peaks to be the sacred homes of protective spirits, and, secondly, due to the lack of high-altitude rescue resources any closer than India.
8. In which US city can you drive under the harbor through the Sumner, Callahan and Williams Tunnels?

Answer: Boston

Opened in 1934, the 1,723m-long Sumner Tunnel carries road traffic southwest under Boston Harbor from Logan Airport and East Boston to Haymarket Subway Station and I-93. The slightly shorter Callahan Tunnel, opened in 1961 and named after WWII casualty Lieutenant William F. Callahan, carries traffic out of the city, from the North End toward Logan.

The Williams Tunnel was opened to commercial traffic in 1995 and to general vehicles in 2003. Named after US Marine veteran and Boston Red Sox legend Ted Williams, it is the final leg of the Massachusetts Turnpike and connects South Boston with the airport.
9. If you land at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, which African city are you visiting?

Answer: Lagos, Nigeria

Although known simply as Lagos International Airport during construction, it had been renamed Murtala Muhammed International after a former Nigerian military head of state by the time it opened in 1979. In the 1990s, the airport acquired a reputation for danger, and the US FAA posted warning signs advising travelers that security at "LOS" did not meet minimum standards.
10. Gary IN, Green Bay WI, Chicago IL and Muskegon MI are cities on the shores of which of the Great Lakes?

Answer: Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is the only one of the five Great Lakes located entirely within the USA. With a surface area slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia, it is the third largest of the Great Lakes after Superior and Huron (although only Superior contains more water).
